- Ukrainian servicemen fired howitzers at attacking Russian forces near Bakhmut on Thursday (February 16).
“They are sending a lot of troops. I don’t think that is sustainable for them to keep attacking this way. There are places where their bodies are just piled up,” said Taras Dzioba, 80th Air Assault Brigade press officer.
Bolstered by tens of thousands of reservists drafted in December after months of humiliating battlefield reverses, Russia has intensified attacks across southern and eastern Ukraine in recent weeks, and a major new offensive is widely anticipated as the first anniversary of its invasion nears.

Holy Mother of God!! In contrast during the Vietnam War, the US lost 58,000 killed, but that's spread out over 20 years.
There is nothing funny about that magnitude of loss of life, with Ukraine probably suffering losses in the range of 50000-150000 too we can assume losses of 500000-1000000 combined by the end of this war.
Those don't include civilian losses, such a massive waste of life and young life too.

That first soldier spoke very good English. Maybe he's lived abroad.
By the sound of it he's a foreign volunteer rather than being Ukrainian. It's possible he's from a family of Ukrainian heritage and has chosen to fight for that reason.
There are many Ukrainians living abroad with citizenship. Recall Lt Col Vindman.
He speaks English with an accent. My guess would be that he's a Ukrainian who lived and worked in the USA or Canada for years, learned English very well, and then went back to defend his homeland. Judging from how well he speaks English, I'd guess that his family may have moved to the USA or Canada when he was a teenager. Of course, I don't know for sure.
My impression is that he's a "regular" Ukrainian. Just had a good chance to learn a practice his English. Abroad or in Ukraine.

I saw the soldier in the underground shelter. He's my age (60?) and looks like me... I'm stuck here (in a physical not to good state) and he's there, fighting... I hope that he stays well and becomes a hero.
