  • My friend's 1973 Corvette was running horribly due to worn-out points so we replaced them and adjusted the initial points gap.
But setting the gap is only a part of the equation if you want your C3 Corvette to run optimally, so we also set the dwell angle and I will upload a separate video covering that topic.
This video is just an overview of the process instead of a detailed how-to tutorial as I usually publish, but if you are somewhat familiar with installing and adjusting a set of points, then it may give you a better understanding of how that's done.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

We have been getting a lot of practice working on the ignition systems of C3 Corvettes lately.

On a smallblock 307, I used to use my dads "Dwell meter" on the points. Get it close, fire it up. Attach the dwell meter to the coil and with a specialty screw driver, open the window and adjust the points spot on. I think it was 30 degrees on the dwell meter, but could be wrong. FYI Once dwell is set/changed (points gap is messed with) your timing will move. You must re time the vehicle as the timing changes. Never set timing then dwell. Set dwell then timing.

That’s how we did it. Replaced then gapped the points, adjusted dwell angle, then set the timing (initial/idle timing first, then total timing at around 2500 rpm at 34° I think it was). It made a HUGE difference. It truly felt like the 350 woke up.

Nice I actually just did this and timing in my 73 vette…even has the original remy distributor cap…seems I did it right

Didn't see you lube the distributor shaft or the backside of the pad. The pad that rides on a dry shaft wears out quickly.

I don’t film every second while working on cars, and I don’t remember if we did or didn’t lube it, but your comment is well taken. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

Question: when you set Dwell Angle to 30 overtime the rubbing block wears some and the car still runs strong but Dwell Angle now reads 25. How far can you go before it starts to run rough? Dwell Angle to 20 degrees?

Change the ignition points every 12 to 15k miles. They are cheap. 😊👍🏻

@@76vette Thanks. I know. I have two NOS Delco Remy sets, the old ones with the light gray rubbing block. I was just wondering as to what Dwell number they start to make for a rough idle?

Do those have to be gapped.
