    Whoa, when the door handles didn't react at first I was like "whaaaatt?!". Phew! Glad the car wasn't dead like I had been dreading. So the car just shut down automatically since it wasn't in use for so long? Heard a lot about the vampire drain, glad it's no longer a huge issue. Thanks for the video. And Congratulations on your engagement, Bjorn!

      Thanks :) Yes, I was also nervous that the car would be dead after so long. If the keys are away from the car for 24 hours, auto present door handles temporarily disables.

    It is important to note that Li-ion batteries have a very well documented standard drain. In 25 degrees that is about 8% per month. This has been colder, and should have less drain, but this means that the Tesla did not use the full 20% battery. Not that this matters for the user, but it is worth noting that at least a large part of the drain cannot be avoided even if you disconnect the battery.

    This is actually superior performance. A LIon battery usually discharges at 1% per day. So in 27 days it should have been at 62 to 63 percent. The fact that it was at 70 percent surprised me. Anything less than 1% per day is excellent.

      It's the opposite, in fact after car starts to move the display message show the heating battery to improve his performance; usually the ideal temp for Li ion are +10 / + 30 degree

    • @RubenKelevra
      @RubenKelevra 8 років тому

      Mauro Scimone They heat up the battery to gain the possibility to charge it faster, high internal battery resistance and higher battery wear is the reason why they deactivate the recup breaking. Also noticing the limited output power.
      Cold batteries loose their charge faster than room temperature batteries. That's the whole reason why Björn did this video, it's cold so the vampire drain is higher.

    • @kellyrayburn4093
      @kellyrayburn4093 8 років тому

      Ruben Kelevra I'm sorry but I don't consider less than 1% drain per day of sitting idle to be "vampire" drain and anyone who does has unrealistic, unreasonable expectations.

    • @RubenKelevra
      @RubenKelevra 8 років тому +5

      Kelly Rayburn Li-Io batteries have a self-discharge of '< 2 %' per month according to wikipedia.de
      So a increase of 1500% is no vampire drain? :)

    If the tesla has a sleep mode, like a phone or computer, that also means you could have turned the vehicle completely off, and have saved more battery life? ~ just curious

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 років тому +2

      +Ted Green It was in sleep mode. If it wasn't sleeping, the drain would have been even bigger.

    • @AnhTrieu90
      @AnhTrieu90 8 років тому +10

      The car is never completely off. The battery temperature control system has to be on all the time.

    • @RubenKelevra
      @RubenKelevra 8 років тому +2

      The car set itself into sleep mode automatically. This means that the MCU is in standby and the driver display is off. There are some microcontrollers at deep sleep, but they react as you press the handles. The wake-up off the Bluetooth module takes some while, the handles of the car only pop out when the key has been successfully detected.
      When you open the driver door, the MCU and the driver display boot up again, but this actually takes some time, so that's the reason why you can disable the sleep mode function.
      You can also disconnect the car, so that the MCU is not always connected. This saves some energy.
      You can also shut down the car completely, if you need to.

    With 77.5 kWh usable capacity, the car used 0.57 kWh/day. I wonder if the rate of vampire damp depends on ambient temperature. The video was recorded in winter. What would the vampire drain be in spring/ fall when the battery does not need to be cooled nor heated?

    Thanks for the info. It was very informative. No outlets in the garage? I'm thinking it would be a good idea to take my Tesla out of range mode too! I'm sure it doesn't get quite as cold here in Buffalo, NY, USA as it does in Norway!

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 років тому +1

      I have outlets in the garage. But at the time, many cars, including my own, had problems with leaving the car plugged in. It could lead to 12 V battery low.

    • @knpstrr
      @knpstrr 9 років тому

      +xrayangiodoc I have come to the conclusion that it gets colder here in the US than Norway! In michigan we have many days at say 10 F or less which is -12C ... Bjorn's videos seem to show a lot of say 2 C days or 35 F which is a nice winter day in Michigan. Or right now as I type it is 29 F here and 34 F in Bodo

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  9 років тому

      @knpstrr 9 років тому

      Bjørn Nyland Quite true. But even southern Norway is more north than the northern most point of Michigan! In my view, it should never be warmer in Norway than Michigan! :)

      knpstrr It's warmer by the coast because of the Gulf Stream :) If it wasn't for that then it would be like Siberia here.

    Hey Bjørn ! I love watching your videos. I had a question though. Before you left for the trip, did you manually shut the car off, or did you just get out and lock it, letting it naturally go to sleep ? Also, any idea how cold it was while you were gone ? (I could totally understand if you had something better to do while in Thailand than check the weather back home !)

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  11 років тому +7

      I let it naturally go to sleep. I think it does it fairly quick, after half an hour or so. While I was gone, the temperature was about +2°C to -2°C based on the weather logs. Yeah, I was busy eating delicious Thai food and spending time with my wife ;)

    The calculation is wrong (347-246)/347 = 29%. Even if you consider the full range of 400 km (346/0.9 = 385) you still get 101/400 = 25%. Why did you say in the video that it had lost less than 20%? Did you divide on the theoretical range of 480 km?

      Steven Giannakopoulos yes but easybring give him like 300-500$ if He work all weekend, I believe He has good paycheck at the university and some good job in scala, easybring is just for fun. Norway is fantastic you can be a programmer and dhl :) and pay the tesla bill - I can't imagine any other coutry where normal programmer or dhl stuff can afford tesla.

    • @kodez79
      @kodez79 11 років тому +4

      MrZiemwit The Tesla is about 1/5 of a normal/small house outside cities, probably 1/20 of a near Oslo house. There is no way you will find a flat i Oslo for less than a Tesla, and that includes 15 square meters (150 sqare feet). A one bedroom apartment at 30 square meters will probably be 2 fully specced teslas. In Norway the salaries is high on average, and we have quite high minimum vages. A construction workers minimum hourly pay is more than 150kr or about 25-30$, and the pay goes up after a year. It is illegal to pay anyone in Norway less than 136kr I believe, which is more than 3x the US minimum wage. This is partially to avoid social dumping (check wikipedia). I believe we have if not the flattest salary distribution in the world, then at least very close to the top.
      Also, you should take into consideration that a mid range bmw 5-series is about the price of a Tesla here, but has a lot higher running cost.

    About your numbers. If 347km is 90%, then 100% is 385.6km. The drop in range shown was 347-246=101km. The % remaining should be 246/385.6=63.8%, a drop of 26.2%. Perhaps there is confusion related to the renge estimation?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  11 років тому +1

      You're mixing apple and oranges. The scale and the range doesn't correspond. So therefore you can't take one value from the scale (90 %) and substract a calculated number from the range (63.8 %).
      You shouldn't use range to calculate battery percentage because the hidden 20-25 km backup after 0 km range is not counted in.
      However, if you take the 101 km ideal/typical range difference and multiply that with 0.2 kWh/km, you end up with about 20 kWh. 85 kWh/20 kWh = 23.5 %.

    • @PentaxAstro

      Bjørn Nyland Thanks for the reply Bjorn! Just out of curiosity what is the maximum mileage you have got out of a single full 100% charge? :-)

      Sunil Nijran In video #3 I did 382 km in a single charge with 12 km left. That was on winter temperatures though.

    How young was your battery when you did these tests? Was 1 year old, 5 years old, 10 years old?Batteries are losing performance as they get older.Can you give any stats on the battery? When do you need to buy a new battery for your Tesla car?

    • @spookje111

      +serbanmike He did a vid about his one year 90k km/60k ml tesla experience. The battery lost 4% of its total capacity over the year and distance.

    I just left my car parked in -10 C for about 5 days and had similar results. I had it in range mode, as well. I'm wondering if it would be healthier for the battery to leave it off range mode, and what that additional drain would be on the battery while parked. Do you still leave it in range mode during winter?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  10 років тому

      I rarely use range mode. It's because I always pre-heat the car.

    Did you fly on a 787? How was it?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  11 років тому +1

      It was great :) The entertaintment system was Android-based and worked very smooth. I love how I could zoom and pinch the 3D-map very smoothly just like on a cell phone.

      Bjørn Nyland Was it a lot different than any other plane, or did it feel normal?

    • @bjornnyland
      @bjornnyland  11 років тому +1

      787drmlnr1 Except for the much improved entertainment system with USB-charging and single 3,5 mm connector, the plane was not much different than the Airbus A330 or Boeing 777-200/300ER.
      The window dimming was cool at first, but kinda annoying because it dims so slow. And it can't block the light 100 % either. It's good though that the cabin personell can override it or auto-dim all windows instead of asking everyone to pull down the shades.

      787drmlnr1, I flew in one from Boston to Tokyo. Other than losing avionics and having to land without flaps, the plane was incredible. Smooth as a train, quiet, huge windows, noticeably better air humidity, less pressure change, and that wonderful lighting. I think it changes the game compared to the 777 I flew back on.

    I have a Renault Zoe and have noticed a very small drop, or maybe more likely an 'overestimate' of the state of charge when immediately unplugged. For example if you charge to 91% unplug switch off and on again after 5 mins it says 89%. I guess it must measure a little high immediately after charging so maybe if you include this it may have lost less than 1% per day. Also with the temp being between -2 and 5 degrees I'm impressed as I've notice the battery in the Zoe doesn't like it below 5 degrees.
