I worked with Bill Murray in the 1980s on the first Ghostbusters. My mental health survived it/him but just barely. When I saw Groundhog Day and saw the scenes of his original day I said to myself, "Hello Bill I certainly do recognize you." When I saw the rest of the film I thought, "If only." Great film, however.

I had a thought about a horror movie that takes place on Friday the 13th where a guy has just recently moved into a new neighborhood but starts reliving Friday the 13th over and over. Each time he relives the day he finds out something horrific about each one of his neighbors.

Last year I went to a mystery all-nighter at the Prince Charles Cinema in London. Five films; no advance notice, no refunds.
The first film was Groundhog Day.
The second film was - Groundhog Day. Well, the first five minutes, anyway. Long enough for us to wonder if they were actually going to go through with it. When the film stoped, to be replaced by a caption saying "Just kidding" there were groans of disappointment, then a round of applause.
It's the best joke I've ever seen in a cinema.

When Murray.meets Ned Ryerson, a guy walks through the background, who looks like John Candy. It's not him, but there is a fan-theory, that this is how the Cool Runnings Team got so good so fast. Because they were also trapped in the time loop and practiced.

Around the same time Groundhog day came out there was another time loop movie. 12:01 With Jonathan Silverman (Weekend at Bernies) and Helen Slater. Not as good as groundhog day, but still good. I LOVE time loop movies .... Not sure why, but I do.

And the VHS tape cover for 12:01 was a rip off of the Groundhog day VHS cover with the main character inside a clock face with the female lead on the bottom right of the pic. Even the taglines were almost the same: GHD - "He's having the day of his life over and over again" 12:01 - "He's having the worst day of his life again and again and again"

Ironically, there’s only one Japanese actor in the top 10 billing. Masayoshi Haneda plays Takeda, Rita’s right hand man. Sadly, he only has a couple of scenes as many of his scenes hit the editing room floor. Also, his name is never used in the film nor his face ever shown

Here are two other facts nobody knows about G-hog Day. A band I co-founded and played in, Slavic Projection Folk Ensemble, was considered to be the band that played in the film. They chose Frankie Yankovic's Yanks, and they were definitely the correct choice. Second, my friend and Slavic Projection bandmate, a teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, was the one who coached Bill Murray how to play piano. And there you have it, a slice of Chicago history as it pertains to Groundhog Day.

There are actually several "Remakes" of this film 1:10 . I have seen at least a few of them. As soon as I realize it's just another poor rehashing of "Ground Hog Day", I typically can't get through the rest of the movie and just shut it off.

I feel like claiming Edge of Tomorrow is "kinda" a remake shows whoever wrote this episode has no idea about what that movie or it's source material is about. Not only is the plot device of time loops existed before Groundhogs Day, but most have a cause for the time loop, and Edge of Tomorrow is one of those.

#10 - It's not like Groundhog Day was an original idea.
#1 - While I don't disagree with the approx time Phil was looping, I do disagree with Harold saying it takes 10 years to get good at anything. There's 6 yr old kids on TV that are amazing at things like instruments and what not, unless we're saying that these kids have been living in a time loop?
How long it takes to get good at something is directly related to how much time and effort you put into it. Most of us don't have entire days we can spend on learning things, if we're lucky maybe an hour or two a day, Phil could spend all day on something if he wanted to, he could learn 4 things every day spending 6 hours on each. That quickly brings down how long it would take to learn each new skill.
Some of the skills he didn't even need to learn fully, take the French poetry as an example. We only saw him recall one poem. He may have just learnt the words, didn't need the meaning or a full understanding of French.

I put over ten thousand hours in as a drummer by the time I was seventeen and started later then a lot of other kids. Most people I know who are good at things in general have several skills that they developed concurrently. Phil is just a guy that leaned ice sculpter and can play the piano competently in a specific key. When I saw this movie the first time it never occured to me that he was even looping in terms of multiple years. Just a break from any responsibilities and the abilty to learn for a bit. If he had a full decade without any of the stresses or consequences of life then what little he learned is almost underwhelming.
