  • In this video , I start by painting an intuitive watercolour background on 140 lb Canson XL mixed media paper . I use my "Around the World " (white palette) paint set by the Ocean Paper (theoceanpaper.com), and use a number 12 round synthetic brush by Princeton. I created a frame border with Japanese "washi tape" around the edges of my paper, and I talk about how I like to use this decorative tape. I finish the video by adding mark making overtop the dried watercolour on paper.
    More in this video:
I also swatch over an already existing "swatch" of watercolours by "Mozart", Komorebi. (link below
I show my finished "Beam" watercolour palette that I'd glued my 140 lb Arches watercolour to (in a previous video), and demonstrate how the surface repels water, and therefore my watercolour paint. I had used Dorland's cold wax to get the seal on the surface.

I talk about how I like to use Japanese "washi tape" to frame my watercolour backgrounds, and to "break a blank page" by collaging with a tiny piece of the decorative tape.
When I do my swatches, I like to clean my brush in the shape of my brush stroke on a 98 lb watercolour piece of paper. I love using this paper once it has dried for new paintings/projects.

Allison, our art styles and taste could not be more different. I'm mainly a realistic painter and a big believer in mixing colors. However, I love your videos because your enthusiasm is unmatched, and you always inspire me!

Can I just say your videos are so delightful. Anytime they come up in my feed, I can’t help but click on them and be mesmerized. They are like candy for the eyes and artist’s soul. Please never stop being so natural, intuitive, and random! It’s so refreshing!

I bought this pallet about a week ago for just over £8.00 and I bought two. It’s now gone up to over £14.00! It’s a lovely pallet.x

Beautiful painting! Gorgeous colors! As you were pulling off the washi tape I saw the butterfly and I hoped you would see it too. i appreciate seeing how you incorporated the small piece of washi tape. And I always love watching your mark making!

I have the Komorebi set as well and just love using it. The colours are so pigmented and having the metallic and the neon all in one set is so much fun. I’m enjoying your videos especially since I also have hand tremors and you encourage me to keep doing art even when they frustrate me.

I enjoy your process and have been practicing it as of the past 2 weeks. I am now to the mark making point and feeling a little stuck. I struggle with over thinking.

do you have a sheet/ book or little way of keeping track of mark making you like? i find that helps me. Pinterest boards are good too… and some days when i’m overthinking things I still get stuck too… sometimes when i’m tired i create my best paintings/marks as I just do it to relax and i am too tired to care about the outcome… stick with it and explore marks you love in your wardrobe/books/environment and take notes. play. i’ll do more mark making videos soon.

I've always painted with acrylics, but would love to try watercolors. Individual "pans" are quite expensive to start. can you recommend a large palette w/ lots of colors that's not too expensive for a beginner?

I'm always a fan of using higher quality paper, that is 140lbs... and watercolours within your budget. So many of the affordable larger sets have jumped in price since I'd started... I will look into this - Are you in the US? or Canada?

@@allisondawrant In the US. Also how do you seal a painting w/ water soluable products? Spray?

I almost can't watch you make your art so fast anymore as I feel like a complete idiot when I try to do anything close! Muddy colours, ugly shapes and bad mark making! You make it look so simple yet I find it impossible to emulate! I've been doing art my whole life and some days (most) my efforts do not pay off. I'm so discouraged when I leave the studio to go to bed most nights. I always get up and am excited to try again but alas, it seems to never work out for me. I just seem to waste materials.

    • @allisondawrant
      @allisondawrant  5 місяців тому

aw, i think you are being hard on yourself? it has taken me years of practice and play and muddy unappealing art to be able to paint the way I do now. keep showing up to the studio and give yourself credit for “showing up”! that is amazing and most people would just stop “showing up”. Be patient with yourself and know that all this muddy play/ experiments will add up to a beautiful journey of discovery. You are worth it and you aren’t wasting materials- you are worth it❤️❤️❤️❤️keep exploring and turn off that judgement. Explore other artists and videos and maybe you’ll find a love for a different medium or a new style to try… but treat yourself with kindness. remember your account name is simple art of healing… you chose this for a reason. keep it simple. make art to heal and make art for yourself that you love ( it will come). you have the passion or you would not have written this comment. Take a little break if you need to , a walk outside, or your fave music, maybe write instead of paint when you next go into the studio… keep me posted ❤️❤️❤️❤️

@@allisondawrant Thank you. Your encouragement and love are felt. It's so hard sometimes to stay positive and enthusiastic when you never seem to see 'success'. My friends (the few I have!) seem to think I'm 'good' but honestly, I don't see it. I wish I did and I wish I wasn't self-abusive, but I am. I'm not sure how to get around this. I took the name from my email address. You see, I used to channel drawings from spirit for health information. Very interesting but people thought it was too weird and it didn't fly! I've done large drawings twenty years ago that have shown me my future home! Incredible really but not really too helpful until now! I see that spirit works directly through of of course but I must be blocking somehow now. Hmmmm. Thanks again for taking the time for me and your words are dear to my heart! I WILL keep at it and try not to be so judgemental!!!! (Although, materials are crazy expensive!)
