What I love about this version compared to the original version is that the NiN version was regretting a single mistake, but Johnny's is a reflection on an entire lifetime of mistakes and regrets. That difference and the emotion in Johnny's voice makes his version so impactful and heart-wrenching. And that closing of the piano at the end, in Johnny's own words, was his way of signing off and saying goodbye and thank you to his fans. RIP Johnny.

May GOD keep him and grant him eternal joy with HIM and HIS saints and Angels forever.
Eternal peace grant to him Oh LORD and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen

Johnny Cash took a great song and made it more than a song. He made it a prayer of the soul, a soul in pain and torment.

No such thing as a "soul", which is man-made shit, like the Bible. It's about regret - period. Leave the science fiction out of it.

He was great and so was this song, he didn't write it but it was almost written for him, this song was his epitaph and he knew it you can tell by his demeanor and tone, may he rest in peace, he will always be remembered great people are never forgotten,

I believe Trent Reznor said after hearing this cover that it's not my song anymore. It's his.

One reactor stated when Johnny closed cover of the piano. She stated that Johnny is saying goodbye. He is. One of his children, Roseanne Cash asked her dad if he is saying goodbye in this song, Johnny replied, Yes.

That song affects a lot of people that way it did the Russian girl. Her emotional reaction gives you a glimpse of a good heart inside. Now I have to go phone my mother.

I love when I get to experience a cover performed this passionately. I loved the original by Nine Inch Nails! But, Johnny took it to a whole different plain and personal feeling. It's like NIN wrote it just for him!!!

Can I just say, Thank you Trent for writing this song... and allowing Johnny Cash to do a cover of it. The timing couldn't have been written ahead of time (if you get it, you get it... if not, google this release vs June and Johnny's death dates). One man's look on his young life and a cover by a legend looking back on his, If you're not crying, at least a little...

I would like to say as well that personally, subjectively, I feel in the hooks where the relentless piano comes in, a nuance of rage, almost a futile (?) rage born of regret. I'm not sure that was what he intended at all, given the imagery from the video. But counterpoint this to one of his other songs, Satisfied Mind, where he touched upon feeling peace in passing...
...bwtween the visuals and the song itself, it is extremely powerful, and invokes such intimacy with the life of the man regardless of one's knowledge of his past trials.

Johnny really liked the video and when he showed it to his daughter, she told him she didnt like it because the video made it seem like he was dying. Johnny was perplexed by her reaction. He didnt see what she saw. He just thought it was cool video.

This is why it's such a sad song and emotional to watch. You're seeing a man's last good byes put into words in a beautiful song. His life reflections, regrets and pain and the pictures of his wife, kid, family. It's so deep and while I don't have his life. There's something very human for people to connect with because it makes you think of your own life, the regrets and like that day your on your last days of life. The reflections you'd have, it's just real and raw and hard not for it to strike a chord emotionally for people listening to the song and watching the video with it.

Kinda thought the piano was almost reminded me of a coffin. And he shut his own
    Too powerful.
Not suppose to be 55 n tear up from a song.
    That's the point.
It's so much more than a song.

Sometimes a song has to be stripped down- avoid becoming over-produced. Check out Nirvana's "Unplugged" -but this cover has so much more emotion than NIN. So all the respect to the legend, Johnny Cash.
