They really should have made orange a category. It would clear up a good amount of confusion.
They got purple, a mix of red and blue - Why not red and yellow for orange? Makes sense to me, yeah!
Cause as far as I’m aware, Orange isn’t a Category in Pokémon Colors

I think orange isnt classified as a color in Japan or so something along those lines, thus it isnt a pokedex color
The reason why so many colors are so confusing is due to cultural dissonance.
The huge restraint of John not picking Drowzee during the Yellow round is astounding.
It's officially yellow, but I wouldn't risk catching it for yellow round because its lower half is brown

Thinkatink is pink, but the hammer is purple. So is a clear gamble between red and grey.

Just for funsies, I made two "monocolor" teams based on official colors.
The pink one was bulky but didn't hit hard enough (Tinkaton, Scream Tail, Blissey, Slowbro, Flamigo, and Bewear before the HOME update).
The purple team was made up of several competitive Pokémon and was kinda good (Corviknight, Great Tusk, Gengar, Mienshao, Indeedee, and Cloyster).

@@curiouscreator8806 I did a hunt for them, ended up getting 4 on a sandwitch. 3 female, one male, and the male and one of the females both had marks. I was suuuuper surprised.

For Gligar being classified as purple, in the original gen 2 games (GSC) it was purple and then changed to a more pinkish color in later gens. The older Pokemon's color classification will always be the same as they originally were, regardless if their colors have changed over time.
Even now it looks very similar to Espeon which they knew was purple from earlier. I was very surprised Mikey went for Gligar, it's always looked purple to me.
Now I'm curious if Sneasel was labeled as brown in Gold and Silver, due to the pre-Crystal sprite.

Gligar is purple in the anime
Colour categories were added in gen 3(technically, as you could search the dex using this method, but officially it wasnt added til DPPT/HGSS), so sneasel's crystal change saved it's category. @@Lokear

i had the pokemon crystal guide book so i already knew that gligar was purkle long ago >_< but not everyone was exposed to that and newer pictures show a much more ambiguous close to pink coloring in the artwork.

I'm just as upset about spoink and lechonk they made THE PALE GRAY PIG *BLACK* AND THE MOSTLY BLACK PIG *GRAY* .
There's no orange option and pink is very close to orange (they sit next to each other in the color spectrum), so there's that......

I can't help but feel like if they just swapped those two Tatsugiri's colour classification around it would make so much more sense.

One thing I'd like to point out about Espeon is that it actually used to be purple. If you look at earlier sprites of it, it actually is purple. Aside from a brief period in Crystal, it first started appearing as pink in HGSS. Even spin-offs during this era depicted it as purple.

Gligar also was super purple in gen 3 and DPPt, but imo nowadays, it definitely is depicted as pink.

On a hunch, looked up Gligar's early sprites, and it's... confusing. In gen 2, it was pink. In gens 3 and 4, it looks purple. Only from gen 5 onwards does it become pink again and stay that way. I checked when the sorting by colour mechanic was introduced and lo and behold, it was in gen 3, when it still looked purple.
Gliscor is also classified as purple btw (despite clearly being gray) so at least Mikey's theory of giving the same colour to evolutionary lines is holding up. By that logic, I guessed that Lotad would be green because Lombre and Ludicolo are primarily green, and I was right! It is classified as green. So you guys really did learn something from this challenge and helped us make more sense of this nonsensical classification.

As someone who has done a couple of different colorlocke playthroughs, I was SO STRESSED for John and Mikey during this video lol the Pokedex determined colors really make no sense for a lot of these Pokemon
The second Mikey was going for Gligar, I was immediately scared since it was purple in the earlier gens, and I didn't think they changed that.

Gligar's color is so inconsistent that depending on the game it can even look blue to the point i wonder if i ran from a shiny at some point
Yeah, look at its Platinum vs. HGSS sprite, I deadass wouldn't fault anyone who played one game first, then the other, and assumed the other one was shiny.
Also they fixed Roaring Moon at some point, since Home classifies it as blue now.
The real weird outliers in gen 9 are Rabsca (green) and Orthworm (pink), imo.
Also Okidogi counts as black (all the Loyal Three do), making 15:54 extra amusing.
Rabsca's body is teal, so it counting for green isn't that outrageous.
What is outrageous is the freaking *red and orange* worm counting as pink; that has absolutely no excuses.
Ai, so many pokemon, but so limited colours that keep on getting repeated colours, Laughed so much at John's encountering a Grimer, but instead it was a Ditto!!! Congrats on the shinies. Mikey screaming at 22:28 scared me too and then seeing the Tatsugiri situation is a bit unfair that lead to the draw for the round. However, hilarious ending as always.

I do love how insane Pokemon are with assigning the colour categories with lack of consistency.
Like there are ones where its the main colour of the whole line, there are ones where its the main colour of the base form for the whole line regardless of how it changes, there are ones where the colour switches aroundmid-line even though the proportion of colours is consistent.
Not to mention ones that are clearly contradictory to the actuall design (trash cloak burmy being red always comes to mind when it is clearly pink the based on the typically pink fibre glass insulation)
And it's not even like they followed logic X in gen 4 but then in gen 5 they used logic Y the logic is a complete hodge podge.

This video was so fun! It did give me an idea for a future video that I think could be good. You each do rounds catching a Pokemon, and then tell the other what colour group that Pokemon is in, with the opponent having to work out if it’s true or false. Possibly even catch several do it in a 2 truths and a lie format. Would be fun getting into each other’s heads and learning even more about how ridiculous the colour system is.
If i had a nickel for every time Mikey gets a shiny and john completely ignoring that and goes right into his sponsorship, i would have 2 nickels

fun language fact! what shade classifies as a separate colour is highly subjective and very influenced by your native language!
Orange isn't its own colour in many languages, and wasn't a colour in English and most European languages until roughly 500 years ago (and it's actually named after the fruit, not the fruit after the colour!).
Japanese doesn't even have a name for it other than "orenjii" which is just the English word pronounced badly (which in turn is just the French word pronounced badly), so it makes sense it's not a colour in a Japanese game. Blue and green are also often treated as one colour in many languages, and in Japanese "aoi" more commonly means blue, but can also mean green! Though they do have a separate word, "midori", for green. Still it makes sense for those colours to get mixed up sometimes.
Unrelated but there's also languages which have more distinctions than we do, so what we perceive as light blue and dark blue are totally separate colours in some languages, and people who grew up with those are probably appalled and mystified we just treat them as the same thing.
In the history of languages, most start out just having light and dark to separate colours, with red usually being the first to be distinct. Orange tends to be the last, or one of the last, if there's a word for it at all. So don't take your perception of the world for granted, even if we all see the same thing, your brain is making up the lines based on your culture and language! Light is a spectrum that has no clear end of one colour to the next!
