The combination of getting Pokemon ridiculously wrong, John getting incredibly lucky with colors, and John getting the Feebas has made Mikey more angry than the time he killed the Shiny Gods.

I think Mikey is genuinely cursed to bring random shinies to anyone he plays with. A legitimate shiny Feebas on a 1/8000 game is BONKERS. Edit: Just saw the Abra. Oh my god.
The rom they are on almost certainly had increased shiny odds, even if it was unbeknownst to them. The chance of them both encountering a shiny at full vanilla Emerald odds is just so astronomically small.
Orange is actually a relatively new colour! The first known usage was in 1502, in reference to the fruit (so yes, the fruit came first); before then, orange things were typically described as red (which is why people with orange hair are called redheads) or brown. I'm not sure when "orange" migrated to Japan, but it's worth pointing out that their word for it (オレンジ, romanized as "orenji") is extremely similar to the English word, indicating they got it from our language. This is all a long, roundabout way to say that "Orange" is a Western concept that probably isn't as much of A Thing in Eastern cultures, which is why it isn't an official Pokedex colour.

I was really rooting for Mikey as a fellow Hoenn boy to win the Hoenn episode, but the fact that you two chose colours for Gen 3 was almost like it was purposefully done to mess with him.
Fun fact, Fuecoco is the first real red fire starter even though others are categorized as red despite the fact that they’re clearly not. (Litten might count but it’s mostly black)

The rom they are on almost certainly had increased shiny odds, even if it was unbeknownst to them. The chance of them both encountering a shiny at full vanilla Emerald odds is just so astronomically small.

Orange is actually a relatively new colour! The first known usage was in 1502, in reference to the fruit (so yes, the fruit came first); before then, orange things were typically described as red (which is why people with orange hair are called redheads) or brown.
I'm not sure when "orange" migrated to Japan, but it's worth pointing out that their word for it (オレンジ, romanized as "orenji") is extremely similar to the English word, indicating they got it from our language.
This is all a long, roundabout way to say that "Orange" is a Western concept that probably isn't as much of A Thing in Eastern cultures, which is why it isn't an official Pokedex colour.
