What I learnt about my extended time in Varanasi is that true Aghori’s will not be sitting in the middle of the street or inviting you to ceremony’s, you will hardly be able to get near them. They have people with them that will move you on but if you look in the shadows, you will see them. Respect they want their privacy, they are not there to practice their beliefs for a show and move on. The fake Aghori’s will be doing this for the tourists along with the fake Sadhu’s. Varanasi is full of them. Watching the people in India, westerners are so desperate for their unique spiritual or cultural encounter, they will believe anything for what they are chasing. People need to chill, India will gift you what you need at the time even if it is not what you are seeking.

I went to Varanasi many years ago and watching this video it is so amazing that the surreal, dream-like quality of that place is apparent even in video. It is an incredibly powerful experience being there, it is like being in a dream or a different dimension of reality. There is no time, no order except that which nature defines. After a few hours it changes you and this strange, alien quality starts to bubble up from your unconscious. It’s hyper-reality, like that sense of extreme familiarity or homecoming you sometimes experience on a trip except you’re not on drugs you’re just alive in a place that offers no artificial filters of any kind. It’s terrifying and beautiful and I really hope I can someday return before I die.

My eyes were glued to the screen for this one, the people you spoke to were so open and wonderful. Offered a nice perspective into a vastly different environment, culture, and belief system. The traditions of the Aghoris have been continuing since the Stone Age.
The rituals, the sounds, the mantra that you witness at the ghats of Varanasi were created when there were no pharaohs in Egypt and no kings or senators in Rome.
Much more than the rituals it would be interesting to learn the stories about the ancient world that these Sadhus have preserved through oral traditions.

This was in the late 80's and 1990's, before UA-cam channels were a thing, so I just got some pictures and the knowledge stays within. New subscriber here! This video is phenomenal. Thank you so, so much for telling the story of the Aghori so respectfully.
I am Indian, but born to parents who converted to western cultures and religion during the end of British colonisation and left to have a new life in Australia, where I was born.
Much of my family history has sadly been lost forever as my parents were encouraged to adopt to western culture to obtain a “better” living standard and were educated in British administered schools.
They feel ashamed of their history because they were “lower caste”, so having open discussions about certain traditional practices is impossible.
I’ve been searching for honest, authentic portrayals of Indian culture to re-educate myself and I’ve found it in your wonderful material.
I heard stories from my grandmother about how my grandfather used to anoint, clean, and burn bodies in his village.
Over time, he completely lost his sense of smell as he prepared bodies for burial and we used to joke about how he couldn’t smell my mothers awful cooking! Haha!
My grandmother mentioned that he ate human flesh during a ceremony, most likely hosted by Aghori. My grandfather was a very spiritual and gentle soul. He had many friends of different social classes, and religions, and was kind to all. When I saw you meet Kashi Baba, seeing you both interact with each other reminded me of my wonderful grandfather and brought me back to my roots.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and hope to see more of you!😊❤️👍🏽

That is a really funny joke, haha! And it reminds me of my time, my first time in Varanasi, in January of 1999. i stayed right behind the Harishchandra ghat, the small burning ghat on the other end of the city, our guest house owner would ask us, if we like the smell in the air, and we did not know then, what it was, filling the air and our nostrils....we actually did like it...then he told us....we laughed. Later that year i went back to India and stayed for nearly 4 months, 6 weeks in Varanasi again and i spent hours and hours, sitting in one of those two little round balconies, overlooking the main burning ghat, the Manikarnika ghat. It was fascinating, it truly was. To sit there alone and watch this ritual going on, if some people would not be wearing western clothes, you might as well be sitting there in the year 1000 A.D., you know...thinking about life & death... .. . . . .

"The Path of the Aghori is to take that which is considered terrible and transmute it into a divine substance of God and oneness..."
I heard someone describe the Aghori belief like this, I'm paraphrasing...
"God is perfect, and God made Everything, so Everything is perfect. So if you're offended by anything you're offended by God." So it is the practice of doing EVERYTHING.
My Golden Dawn studies talk of Light in extension, "Respect all religions for each contain a spark of the divine."
I've been delving into Hinduism lately, part of spiritual growth. I was led to this today, out of curiosity.
To hear you mention the word Transmute is auspicious to say the least.
This was an amazing way to spend my time, I wish you all of the best in whatever you favor.

      I just realized something:
In Shakti belief, if I'm not mistaken, Hanuman is an incarnation of Shiva.
Hanuman (Shiva) took mercy on you, by manifesting as a body of a monkey as a sign.
He stopped you from finding a body of a human, you were wishing hoping and praying. Call that supposition a hunch. ;)
      Jai Hanuman.

You wanted to find a body, but you didn't want it to be human.
Call it second sight, when I see things I see them.

Aghoris don't harm civil society . Civil society don't harm aghoris. Both respect each other.
It's a different path of devotion . Dont just run after anything. If it's meant for you. It will happen to you. Nature choose you. You don't choose anything.
Respect aghoris for their sacrifice in life and dedication for devotion.
