I am going to be honest. At the age of 47 years old, I think I am finally done working on my vehicles. My alternator just S.T.B at 183k and it was the original. I can easily do this job, but between working 60+ hours in my 5 day work week, and my 4 kids and wife, I just don't have the time. If I didn't have the $$ to have it fixed, I would do it myself, I just don't have the desire to do this crap anymore. Thank you for showing us. I was shocked when I called for price on a new alternator and realized if I'm paying $400 dollars for a new one, why not have someone else friggin do it. IDK if any of you are at the point where I am at.
If I am doing the job myself I'm definitely getting the alternator for a cheaper price and $400. One day I know I will be tired of working on vehicles and that was a driving purpose to start the channel. You can only wrench so long before your body starts to say no you are not wrenching LOL with the channel I can help people long past when I am tired of wrenching.
@@Sellthoseflippingcars I appreciate the content and that you are doing it to help others. I got a price for the alternator from $279 all the way up to $400 from Autozone. I made the mistake of replacing one with an Autozone alternator in my wifes 2010 Chevy Traverse only for it to not communicate with the computer 200 miles away from home during a snowstorm in the hills of N.Y and having a tech tell me I needed to buy an OEM alternator which was $800+. Now we have a 2020 Pacifica and my 14 GC and the GC has caused me very few issues. I have gotten really lucky with it, maybe because I bought it new and keep up with the maintenance.
Maintenance makes any vehicle the best vehicle in the world or the biggest pile you have ever seen. Keep up with the maintenance and all problems will be small ones. That is crazy with the mechanic, some are so brainwashed by the repair shops and the propaganda put out by the manufacturers it is alarming. Saying that OEM alternator when they know all these alternators are made in the same factory. Just sad, its like they dont want repeat customers.....
@@Sellthoseflippingcars I had the dealership do it because it was my wife's vehicle and we have 2 sets of twins and I couldn't worry about crap like this. I just wanted her to have piece of mind that it was being handled accordingly. Not that she doesn't have faith in my abilities, she knows I can work circles around some of the dummies at the dealerships with the patches all over their shirts, so I had the dealership install a new alternator which caused them to F up the ac hoses which were not in production for some reason and they had to send them out to be remade. Had we not had two vehicles while on the trip to NY (my trusty GC) we would have been screwed. Thanks for the reply. I enjoy talking shop and sharing stories.
That’s exactly how I just replaced my alternator on my wife’s van I watched videos that showed removing the bolts from the ac condenser and at first I was considering that route but after looking at the alternator placement I knew that removing the fan was the best option, nice illustration and I highly recommend this technique for the proper alternator procedure!
Well worth watching. My lady's van just threw the alternator today and I gotta look at it in the morning and see if it's corrosion on the wires or if I get to take it apart to put in a new one. I appreciate the work and attention to detail you put into this video and for that I thank you sir!
You are most welcome Blake! Hopefully your alternator replacement will go with ease, it will make you look like a rockstar for your lady! Let me know how the repair goes
doing a friend of mine at work love the video was way easier than most of the videos I've seen this will be the first dodge caravan I'm doing thank for the help.
I'm in the middle of the same job you're doing just taking a break thought I'd watch some UA-cam you're very informative I should have watched you before I started however it's not going too bad
His method of removing the cooling fan is significantly easier than attempting to remove the alternator from the passenger wheel well / under the car. Also if you are bothering to do this repair. Pick up a 16mm socket and replace the belt tensioner assembly and the serpentine belt if you are already over 100,000 miles. It'll only take you an extra 15-20 minutes while you have everything opened up. You could also replace the idler pulley at this time and you would have knocked out 3 bearings that are known for failing around the same time. Thanks for the video.
I totally agree Kodi, this is the most opportune time to check the rest of your vehicle while you have this 1 on 1 time with it. Great tips! However, if you drop the compressor down without disturbing the freon lines, you don't need to take out the fan or drain coolant. Comes out the bottom no problem. Alternator bolts have plenty of room to come out without hitting the fan. Saves a some time and aggravation fighting the fan. Keep up the great videos!
Thanks champ. Big help for me. Have to change mine on a 2014 caravan. I actually just did the oil cooler module on the same engine. Went with the aluminum housing Dorman rather than the plastic one.
