  • Here’s a study guide to help you solidify the concepts behind the Tarot and its associations with the tree of life in the so-called 'Hermetic Qabalah'.
    This talk was put together by synthesizing a handful of notes, though the bulk of the information was drawn from LIBER θ by Aleister Crowley. There’s a bit of history, a bit of theory, and a bit of practice. Hopefully it can be of use to you in your practices. There’s something here for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. It's recommended you have the cards with you while going through the guide.

    I found that my study of Kabbalah and the Tarot improved when i became less attached to the ideas of divination and "readings". Only because the temptation to treat tarot like a parlor trick only inhibits one from seeing the breadth and dimension of the entire system.
    My most profound experiences began when I allowed myself to remain focused on a card as a daily motif for periods longer than 4 days. Also, when i exposed myself to some neuroscience literature my understanding of what was going on improved and it also liberated me from being so reliant on the mythology surrounding tarot and Qabbalah.
    I learned them in a different order than you proposed here, mostly because i was influenced heavily by the structure of Robert Wang's treatise on the topic. I think it was helpful for me to do it this way because, i ended up learning the Pips and Courts as a series of sets instead of individually. It only took about 10 weeks- and when i moved into the trumps i had already acquired a decent level of understanding.
    Getting through a lot of content fast made it easy because I had basically "pre-studied" everything (sorta like skimming through a textbook before engaging in more labored study). By the time i started learning the cards more intensely i was already familiar with the rough concepts and thus it became more an activity of remembering what i had already been exposed to. In total it took me about 7 months to work through the entire deck once.
    Being someone who is academically minded, I generally agree that there is systematic way of learning that is most efficient if one wants to fit into a particular school of thought about the Tarot. But then there are so many other interesting approaches to engage the learning process in a non-linear way. The key is frequency with the material and persistence. I've always found it helpful to just jump in headfirst and figure it out along the way, following the paths of interest (in order to reduce the fatigue of surmounting the initial learning curve). Ultimately the learning process, for me, was a combination of systematic learning mixed with periods of free-form exploration. Gaps can always be filled later if they appear. The key thing ive also learned is that the holes in ones understanding are the arrows that illuminate the next course of study.
    I've come to understand that each card essentially operates as a meme. The cards have a sort of gravity- wherein each card represents a set of related memetic symbols that orbit around a node (or what i like to call a memetic vector point). These nodes express a type of gravity that forms something like a convalescent relationship between the unknowable "object" at the center of the node and any symbol that sufficiently represent individual facets of the object. Another key to my learning has been to emphasize "differentiaton" as a main objective when moving from one card to the next. By that i mean putting a great deal of attention into defining one card in contrast to other cards instead of trying to define and study the cards in isolated section. this was. For example, spending time differentiating the cards that connect to a particular Sephirot or perhaps cards that fall along a geometrically significant path on the tree - differentiating and meditating on them as subsets and groupings.
    Also, there is a strategy that i also find useful in studying the Tarot. That is to use two decks to analyze each card instead of one. In this strategy it helps to have two decks that depends on two different modalities. For example, i am a fan of using Hermetic Tarot in combination with another deck called Kabbalistisches Tarot. Sometimes i work with the Thoth deck (but im currently working through my issues with Crowley :D)
    I like Hermetic Tarot because it uses similar imagery to GD/Thoth and I find that it can be easily interpreted with most textbooks and a decent understanding basic occult symbolism and mythology. I would consider the HT a neutral deck in the sense that it is uses traditional imagery and is similar enough to Thoth, GD, RW, Marseilles to be successfully interpreted using the corresponding resources available for each of the deck styles. The Kabbalistisches Tarot ( AGM Müller 1983) is nice because it is non-pictorial. Some people are thrown off by this, because the "intuitive" approach is such a fad nowadays. However, i find it quiet interesting and useful to have a deck that gets straight to the point regarding astrological and Qabbalistic associations.
    Inconsistencies between decks no-long bother me. After spending so much time studying the cards, I've come to the understanding that there is more to be learned in study across the divisions between ideological perspectives instead of remaining bound to a particular one.
    I would add that one gets further when they let go of the desire to have everything laid out for them by a single source or encyclopedia of definitions. I agree with you that the bulk of understanding comes from time spent with the cards and investing the energy to develop a deeper relationship with symbolic language in-general. I would also add (my own opinion) that a noble end goal is to eventually create your own decks based on the notes recorded in your magick journal- because a deck crafted by the user will have the highest degree of potency for contemplation and meditation.
    I find it strange that in all my research into this topic, it is seldom mentioned that two of the most useful things a person can do to improve their understanding of symbolism (in general) is to study Renaissance Art History and acquire an academic dictionary of signs and symbols.
    I rarely use divinatory spreads or ask the cards questions- mostly because I've found it unnecessary to defer such things to chance. My general strategy is to construct my own selection of cards and to use them as a way to construct a lens for myself. This way seems more active and practical for the individual who wants to shape forces rather than be entirely and randomly subjected to them.
    However, I am interested in checking out the GD spread now. Your explanation of it reinvigorated my interest. Thanks.
    Forgive my rambling.
    (also, i am aware that i am inconsistent in my spelling of "Qabbalah/Kabbalah". I have yet to familiarize myself with the distinction between the spellings- but will be correcting that hole in my understanding sooner than later)

      J K Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate the depth of your insight. Your idea of seeing the cards as memes generating a field that pulls symbols into their orbit, has struck a chord on me.
      Subjectively, it’d be more useful for me using the terms “archetype” instead of “meme” and “information field” instead of “gravity field.” Still, it’d be the same concept.
      All the best.

I've already listened to your soundcloud lectures once through and, even though I've already read so much about alchemy/gnosticism, I learned so much! They helped me make connections in ways I hadn't before. I will definitely be listening to them again and again. I can't believe I'd never heard of the Picatrix before!!! I find the most useful route to take with the meditative contemplations of the Tarot is brought by Paul Foster Case and the course he offers with his group B.O.T.A (Builders of the Adytum). Unlike most similar groups surrounding the Golden Dawn, he cuts all the blinds and offers a no BS approach for anyone willing to take the time to study true Pathworking via the Tree of Life.

    This was great. Simple, yet deep. It helped me (for some reason, even though you made no mention of it) make some connections between the Kabbalah and the chakra system and its relations to the small cards which really helped me understand a little bit more of the underlying logic of the tarot cards. Thank you very much!

    • @TheModernHermeticist
      @TheModernHermeticist  8 років тому +1

      +Günther Jäger Oh, I didn't mention that? When it comes to the number cards, you just have to think of it as raw vs. manifested energy - if it's a 10, then it's fully manifested (the emotional/intellectual/etc. energy has gone all the way down the tree of life into manifestation), and if it's 1, then it's just pure unmanifested potential or raw energy.

    • @fantasyis_justice2491
      @fantasyis_justice2491 8 років тому +1

      You mentioned the connection between Kabbalah and tarot, no worries. It's the chakras you didn't mention. I am more familiar with the chakra system than the tree of life. I did not realize that they overlay on each other perfectly. (in some cases two sephiroth being one chakra, like binah and chokmah being the third eye). This helped me understand it quicker.

    This knowledge, I believe, was never meant for other people to "enlighten us," but rather for us to personally understand the meanings and symbolism of each and every symbol contained within...
    It's even more beneficial if you understand not only your own chart/symbolism (as if you find systems like astrology that ask for your date/time/place of birth), but also understand the symbolism of EVERY sign, planet (akin to 'gods'), and pathway, as well as each letter and number and how these relate to the overall knowledge of this system.
    Thanks for going into this subject. I believe that this is a pathway to true knowledge of God.

    I came to your channel a few weeks back as I dove into a newfound Historical curiosity, which hasn’t really been in my learning repertoire. Lo and behold, you’er into Thelema and Tarot, which have been passion studies of mine for a near decade. For as much distain as I have for academia, I’m blown away by your academic approach to Magick, and your magical approach to History. Rare combo. The gap IS being bridged. I’ll point the few people I know who can appreciate what you are doing to your channel.
    Have you read Alejandro Jodorowsky and Marianne Costa’s The Way of Tarot? It doesn’t have the Hermetic/Qabalistic interpretation, but students of Tarot can glean some neat insights and incorporate what they will.
    Have you experienced what Alan Moore does with the Major Arcana in Promethea, Book Two, ch. 6?
    It is actually one of the signposts that lead me into conjuring a greater understanding of macrohistory.
    Finally, do you have a take on the/any relationship between the Major Arcana and the Splendor Solis?

      I have not read ant of Jodorowsky's books, but I have seen (and loved) a good deal of his movies. I'll check it out.
      I've not looked into the Splendor Solis either, I will get on that.

    As far as the etymology behind the word "tarot". My school states that the word itself was a blind, and that the original blind was taro, which is a reassignment of the arrangements of the letters, the original meaning being rota, which in Latin, borrowed from Greek is "wheel", which points to the cyclic nature of how consciousness works and also the cyclic nature of the universe in its creative power.
    So tarot is a blind. When I refer to tarot now in the initiatory sense, I call it the ROTA.

    Hey, if you could do this again, with all of the knowledge of your most recent videos on Hermes and Saturn, etc. would you do it? I would really enjoy seeing it. I thought your videos on Saturn were especially spot on, and your knowledge of the archetypes of the rest of the planets is a large part of the understanding of astrology. The geometry of the "aspects" between planets is also very important, as well as understanding each sign. There are also 12 houses, which relate to when and where exactly (date/time/place) a person is born, and these symbols are able to be related to one another, I believe, with a fundamental accuracy that is astounding.
    If you still haven't looked into astrology, I have a few web sites that are easy to understand (none of which I am affiliated with).
    Anyway, I love what you do with this channel. Thank you sir!

    Lol, e is talking about one week on each card after a nine month period. This is a good system, but at my school, we work with each card in that two week period, until all the majors have been gone through. Then another segment of curriculum goes deeper into the meaning of each card for another two weeks on each major arcana. Then the third segment does the same thing again at an even deeper.level,.learning to use each separate card (or key) and it's corresponding faculty in consciousness in extended ways. Then after this we learn to place them on the paths of the tree of life. There is a shorter segment on the minor arcana, since that has more to do with divination and less.to do with the rousing of subconscious powers, or working with meditations in an initiatory sense. We spend wayyyy more time on each card and it's symbology and in learning what each card does for the consciousness and what ways each card can be used.

    I personaly think Mark Passios explanation on the kabbalah and the microcosmic and macrocosmic tarot (that goes hand in hand) is brilliant. Very simple, easy to understand.
    MicroTarot = self-mastery
    MacroTarot = union with the universal spiritual/hidden laws
    Goal being to become perfect and avoid spreading harm in the world. As Crowley said that's we're all like stars in orbit, but we have no right to smash into anyone else without their permission (hence why there is no violence in a boxing match, cause they both agreed to it.)
    Free to follow any path as long as it's under universal spiritual/hidden laws that governs our actions/behavior.
    Ofcourse we live in a world that's so brainwashed, that most buy into
    thinking that there's legitmacy to slavery (that some should rule by manipulating all others.) Which only occurs when people are asleep or like hiram abiff in the coffin (unconcious magician)... not to mention the legitmacy of thinking it's ok with the extermination of all that don't agree with you

    Can anyone tell my where that drawing of the tree of life is from? Who's the artist and where can I find it?

      Its difficult to tell as the image isn't great but it looks very similar to an engraving by Athanasius Kircher, published in his Œdipus Ægyptiacus in 1652.

    I was naturally drawn to the tarot, for some reason. But I understand it completly through intuition. I have been a student of the occult for a few months now, and this is the best video I have found. I already figured all of this out on my own, but it was a good review for me.

    Hey mang I'm confused because I have the hermetic tarot deck and my court cards are princess, knight, queen, and king but as you read them they are prince, princess, queen, and knight.. so what is the proper correspondence?

    • @TheModernHermeticist
      @TheModernHermeticist  Рік тому +1

      As I understand, the difference comes from the difference between two major decks, the Rider-Waite-Smith and Thoth decks, which both come from the Golden Dawn's 1888 Qabalistic Tarot. Rider-Waite more closely follows the Tarot De Marseille (the previous industry standard so to speak), whereas Thoth deck relied more on Golden Dawn and Crowley’s personal understandings of it. I don't know if we can say there's a proper correspondence, but there is certainly a bifurcation in the tradition, and you'll just have to decide for yourself what is the highest element: air or fire.

      @ Slither's Cave: If you study the Royal Arcana in relation to the Tetragrammaton (the process of creation) you will be able to clear up any confusion here. The energy of the Knight (Yod) is swift, he comes charging in, initiating the Creation process but burns out quickly passing onto the Queen (Heh primal) whose energy, whilst not so explosive is more enduring. This alchemical marriage of Knight and Queen (Chokmah & Binah) produce a Son in the form of the King (Vau) which is a perfectly balanced manifestation. The pure archetypal potential of Kether (the Father) is now realised in Tiphareth (the Son), then passing onto our 'messenger' of the Royal Arcana, the Princess (Heh Final) in Malkuth. This energy, a perfect reflection of Kether is then passed on or re-absorbed by the 'God-Head' and so round and round the process of Creation gos! Try to overcome the humanistic logical assumption that the King Marries the Queen who together have a Son and Daughter, the (Knight and Page) and view these Court cards as pictorial representations of Tetragrammatic energy going forth, creating and returning once again to the source from whence they came. (This also applies to the four suits)
      Crowleys Book of Thoth includes some interesting essays and myths which may help elucidate this interesting conundrum and you will find yourself learning much more than if you merely try to substitute one Royal Arcana version for another. An understanding of Tetragrammation is essential to truly interpret the Tarot Qabalistically. If your journey is anything like mine, you may realise that the Tarot embodies such infinitely deeper and deeper octaves of profound knowledge and the means to develop spiritually that your initial attraction to these 78 cards as a divinatory tool suddenly seems like a mere parlour trick in comparison.
      I truly hope this helps you as it took me a long time to make some sense of the disparity which exists between various books and schools of thought on Royal Arcana attributions.

      @@TheModernHermeticist My understanding of Qabalah and Tarot is constantly growing and evolving and I may have changed my view on this in a few months but I view Fire as the Highest element and attribute them to the Yod of Tetragrammaton and thusly the Knights and suit of Wands. However when studying the Four Qabbalistic Worlds I intuitively feel that AIr is the highest element which I attribute to the Yod and Atziluth. Perhaps this is because before we can create through our Will or desire, we must first have an Idea or Thought about that which we want to bring into manifestation. I have been trying to unravel this gordian knot for years and welcome any input to help expand my understanding here. I guess its important to remember the Tree of Life is not a static map of creation for all but a vibrant and dynamic blueprint which each individual can interpret and apply in their own way. Which interpretation of Etz ha Chaim is the correct one? Well, all of them of course!

    I think Tree of Life and Kabbalah pre date Judaic formation ( its from Sumeria, Assyria) ...the what Jews ended up with was merged with Hellenic notions, then the Kabbalah emerged.

      +wotan237 I think so too - from what I know it's either Babylonian or Egyptian in origin, but I have yet to actually see any physical remains in the archaeological record. This find would make me ecstatic.

    • @LokiDiscordia666
      @LokiDiscordia666 6 років тому +11

      wotan237 The Tree of Life as we know it actually emerged from the Sefer Yetzirah. The Book of Creation. This is a commentary on the creation myth in Genesis where what God said became the numbers or the Sephiroth and what God saw became the Paths connecting these 'principals' Hence we get 10 basic numbers and 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
      The Jews were definitely influenced by Platonic and even Gnostic thinking and the Creation myth is Sumerian in origin so it is easy to imagine a connection. Whether one exists is possibly unknowable. The Tree of Life or Kaballah is today definitely of Jewish origin but it's certainly not inconceivable they were influenced by other cultures

      The Hebrews represent the god wrestlers, the masters who went beyond the Gods of the nations to the Elohim of the Elohim the name of The Most High, Abraham was from Sumer yes but he overcame those gods with the God of Shem
