I'm so happy that you're learning more about Colombian food. Same here with your channel and Aditi's Eat East Indian, I have learned so much from you wonderful gals!
My grandmother used to make this for me when I was little. I always thought it was a big secret how to get the egg inside. Lol It is so simple and now I can make it for my children. Thank you for the recipe.
Hi Neko, the food coloring is optional and it's mainly for aesthetics. Many use yellow pre-cooked corn meal but I hate it because I think it has a funny taste to it. And some people simply leave the dough white and let the oil give it a hint of color.
This looks delicious! I had no idea about this type of arepa even existed. You always make it look so easy. I hope this is as easy as your other recipes.
Thank you Salome! This recipe is really popular in the northern part of the country and it's amazing. Not too healthy but can be enjoyed every now and then.
Hey girl! Believe it or not, the egg doesn't leak out when you put it back in the oil, it's the strangest thing. Now, if you puncture the dough with the knife when you make the side incision, then it will leak out a bit before you put it back in the oil, but not while it's frying. (Btw, I still owe you the pictures you need, I haven't forgotten!) =)
I used to eat these arepas con huevos when I was a little girl in Colombia! I loved them and always wondered how they were made...now I know. Not many ppl know how to make them as the last time I visited Bogota, Colombia I couldn't get one. My question to you is how to make the arepa dough from scratch? I bought cormeal and tried to make arepas but that was a disaster, then I tried all purpose flour and that didn't work either. I couldn't find pre-cooked cornmeal. I've make arepas before but this time I don't want to buy the Pam masa as I prefer to know what goes in the masa and make it myself. Any suggestions? Tx
Absolutely, Alexandra! I also have a video on how to make the masa from scratch by using hominy corn, which can be easily found here in the US. Here's the link for the recipe: www.sweetysalado.com/2014/05/masa-dough-used-for-making-arepas.html
Fantastic! I will definitely try it. Btw, I made your flan recipe last week and although I forgot to add the vanilla extract and rum - casi nada just 1/2 of de ingredients haha - it came out great. Thanks for all the great recetas!😎
Thank you Karilyn. The link for the recipe can be found at the end of the video and in the info box below. You can also find the recipe on my blog, sweetysalado.com. Here's the link: www.sweetysalado.com/2014/02/arepa-de-huevo-egg-stuffed-arepa.html
Certain Latin stores do sell it. When the store I go to has it available, I stock up like crazy because unfortunately, Harina P.A.N. is what they sell the most.
Is the food coloring just for appearance or does it mean something? Like, perhaps an ingredient that is yellow but isn't used anymore? Just curious :-)
I no longer use the deep fryer I show on the video, but it's similar to this one: amzn.to/3UyzKPP This is the one I currently use: amzn.to/3UxLvpK I can't find a link for the cup but you can use something like this amzn.to/4bgOaK1 *All links are from my Amazon affiliate links.
In all honesty, I love the brand Doñarepa. It's really easy to knead and the texture is amazing. But the most popular brand is Harina P.A.N., which I can find even at my regular grocery store. It still works but Doñarepa rocks.
Once you add the food coloring, it turns yellow. You could also use yellow pre-cooked cornmeal but I prefer not to do it because I don't like the flavor.
OMG this looks incredible! I never heard of this, now I want to go to a Colombian Bakery!
These are really popular "en la costa" and girl, I feel so guilty eating them because of all that oil but man, they're good!
Julie! It's fun to see you pop up in the comments of other videos. That's awesome! :)

You make it look so easy😩😩 do they sell Doña arepa in the USA?

Looks like a lot of work lol but delicious 🤤 can’t wait to make this
Alright guys who is here from encanto and thinks arepas look delicious
What brand of precooked cornmeal do you prefer?
In all honesty, I love the brand Doñarepa. It's really easy to knead and the texture is amazing. But the most popular brand is Harina P.A.N., which I can find even at my regular grocery store. It still works but Doñarepa rocks.
Vry oilly item...you use arepa maker.its good for health
My arepas aren't bubbling out correctly! They're like completely collapsing in and I can't really cut them open. 😒
Don't make them too thin or too thick.
why add sugar?
It's just to balance the flavor.
the cornmeal is not looking very yellow. looks like masa
Once you add the food coloring, it turns yellow. You could also use yellow pre-cooked cornmeal but I prefer not to do it because I don't like the flavor.
Looks good. Way too much work. Just make an arepa and fry an egg. :-)
Don't think so, the fact that this a fast street food in Colombia proves this not "too much work".
Me gusto el video gracias
Gracias a tí, Will, por verlo. =)
