- LIVE TROPICS UPDATE | Chief meteorologist Bobby Deskins takes a closer look at Idalia almost becoming a hurricane as it continues track to Florida's Gulf Coast.
Tropical Storm Idalia is nearing hurricane strength as it continues a track toward the Gulf of Mexico. Life-threatening storm surge and strong winds are becoming increasingly likely for parts of the Florida Gulf Coast.
Computer models have shifted the storm a tad farther away from the Tampa Bay coast, but it's important to stress small shifts will continue before the storm makes landfall - and parts of the region will still experience the "dirty" side of the system.
A hurricane warning is in effect from the middle of Longboat Key northward to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay. A storm surge warning is in effect for Englewood northward to Indian Pass, including Tampa Bay.

European. That's the one that guessed Ian correctly, and the Americans ignored it.
European statistically for landfall. GFS for intensity. Both important, but the GFS hadn't even picked up on this until a few days ago. Euro had its path charted for the Bend for weeks.
Euro model has consistently been more accurate. "Living here" has literally nothing to do with the accuracy of the technology.
Don't worry, it'll still be an American hurricane....
