• Smashing Pumpkins - 19...
Teacher at DD Drums 'David Debono' teaching how to play '1979' by the Smashing Pumkins on drums... Hope you enjoy it awesome people...
This is one of those songs that seems at first really easy to play on drums.
But, once you see what's really going on with the drum parts you will see that its actually quite a challenge.
Thus, this is the 1979 challenge...
So, drummers, get your sticks out and have a go of the 1979challenge.
And we have different levels for the challenge...
Level 1: Basic Beat
Level 2: The Accent Pattern
Level 3: The Main Beat #1
Level 4: The Main Beat #2
Level 5: The super challenge
Good Luck fellow drummers!

The equipment I use:
Drums: The drum kit I am playing here on this video is a Mapex Orion. Its a 6 piece drum kit. Tom sizes 10, 12, 14 and 16.
Cymbals: The cymbals are all Zildjian: A series...
Moongel: I am a fan of moongel on all the drums. It dampens the sound and makes it more punchy... If you have a problem with overtones, definitely give it a try...
Microphones: I use Audix microphones
Bass Drum Pedal: The pedal used here is an Axis longboard.
Recording Software: Cubase Elements 10
Video Editing Software: Sony Vegas Movie Studio 16
Digital Interface: Behringer XR18
Drum Sticks: Pro Mark 5A Nylon Tip
Camera: 2 x Canon 800D. 1 x Sony Handycam

Good lesson. I'm a bass player, but I 'm trying to learn drums to teach my daughter. I like how you broke everything down into parts, showed the techniques, and played the different tempos.
Hi Richard... Thanks for the positive feedback... All the best for teaching your daughter the drums... Awesome work!
thanks a lot, you're the only one doing the right patterns on youtube. I was losing my mind because I was hearing something weird with the hi-hat in the song but everyone was playing it like a regular beat, NOW I know I'm not crazy.
This is the drumming channel I never knew I needed. I can see your channel growing exponentially if you just do what you do. Love it!
Hi Tristan. Appreciate the kind and encouraging words... It means a lot. Most importantly, I am really glad this is helping you with your drumming... Keep up the great work!
Bruh u actually deserve more audience
Hi Brother... Thanks very much for your support. Its great to hear from you!

Awesome man! Thank you for uploading!
Damn I always could tell there were accented hi hat notes and at first I thought they were just accenting the off beats but when I played it that way it still didn’t sound right. And then I listened closer and realized it was much more complicated than just accented off beats so I just assumed it was added in post production or maybe even a second percussionist. That’s a crazy hard drum groove. Nicely done.
Whoa, I've been covering that for ages and never realised how much I was missing. Great explanation 👏 👏
Thanks for this. Such a fun groove. Cheers
Thanks Jeff... Yes, it really is a fun song to play. Hope you are doing great Jeff...
This is great! Thank you!

Good lesson
Thank you
thanks! this was super cool. unfortunately on my electric kit i have no ability to accent, but now that i know about that technique, i tried it out in my drum programming for personal compositions and it really helps with the hihat sound/groove... so thanks for that revolutionary result
Cheers!
in regards to 1979, i didn't know about the second hihat (very neat) the cover you cited seemed to even have 3 hihats in total, super cool... i really like jimmy chamberlain's drumming!
thanks!
Hi Hankus... Great to hear from you! Yeah Im a fan of drumming from this band too... Sounds like you have some really cool projects/ drumming on the way... Thanks and keep up the great work!
@@rockyvsrambo82 thank you! im working on getting my drumming caught up with my other instruments, been watching your videos to help... i use 1979 as a warm up now and lead with my left hand in an effort to get that tighter... next big lesson for me is limb independence! you have any tutorials on that already?
One of my favourite songs, Wils next project!
Hi Suzanne. You have a great taste in music. What can I say...
love it! could you do a tutorial on no excuses by Alice in chains? I haven't found a really helpful one and your tutorials always make so much sense to me !
Amazing lesson, thank you. Your mic was popping sometimes, just a heads up!
Yes, thank you for the feedback... Yes the dreaded mic 'pop'... Will do my best to fix this for future lessons... All the best!
