    This is why we are now watermarking anything we put online to stop hobbyists stealing designs we spend a lot of money designing for clients. I do wall and other graphics for a living and in the past few years have seen a few of our designs stolen and being used by others for profit. The other issue is people need to realise upsizing crappy web images at large scale for walls does not work.....

    Also, can you share from your experience, what is an average estimation for a newbie who wants to start such a business, what can one expects in term of ROI? breakeven?
    Thanks.

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +1

      Thank you! And don't overthink the marketing costs on Etsy. Most Etsy stores make the majority of their sales from free traffic, and don't bother advertising offsite on places like Facebook. I'll have a video out in 2 weeks discussing that.
      In terms of product costs, for POD, the profit margins most products/stores work with is anywhere from 20-50%. For digital products, outside of Etsy fees, it's pure profit.
      I have videos where I break down how to calculate profits for specific items, if you'd like to do that yourself for any of these using a profit calculator. For example, I do it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/JnyQqtz8E2E/v-deo.html

  • @ColinCrowtherIreland
    @ColinCrowtherIreland 10 місяців тому

    HI Sarah, thanks for the informative video. How do I know for 100% certainty that the images in Pixabay have the CC0 License? The Content License Summary states what you can and can't do! In terms of what you can't do is the following: ' You cannot sell or distribute Content (either in digital or physical form) on a Standalone basis. Standalone means where no creative effort has been applied to the Content and it remains in substantially the same form as it exists on our website.' - Based on what you have done with some of your examples, is modified the original. Question - Is it okay to sell the modified version as it is no longer standalone?

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +2

      Yes I do know that. I chose photos with a CC0 license. I explain it fully in this video: ua-cam.com/video/IC1GFXiJK7A/v-deo.html
      The Canva license rules, and Pixabay license rules mean nothing. They do not own these pictures, they can't control how anyone uses them legally.
      However, it's still poor practice to sell the as is, unmodified, usually. Although some photos I showed are actually sold in their unmodified form in Etsy, because CC0 rules do allow it. But in this video, I do modify them because usually, it is good practice to.

    Hi Sarah, love the video. I've been wondering though. With Canva, doesn't it only save the images as 72ppi? Is there any way to have a high definition high quality image using Canva that someone could print on something like 24" x 36" or bigger that would look crisp?

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +3

      Canva by default isn't 72DPI, it is 96DPI, but yes, it does by default save in low resolution, so you'll want to use my techniques for increasing resolution here: ua-cam.com/video/nch2NObpZSg/v-deo.html

  • @relaunchinglife
    @relaunchinglife 10 місяців тому +6

    These are awesome videos, Sarah!! How do the customers who purchase these actually turn them into wall art? Once a print is bigger than 8x11 they can't just print it themselves. They send the file to an Office supply store? Or an online printer like Vista Prints? Then it will have to be shipped to them & they'll have to purchase frames and put them together. That just seems like so much more expense & hassle than just trying to find something already made. But I guess if you want a very specific look then people don't care because they are clearly selling!

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +7

      It's a big mixture. Some hobbyists have printers at home they use. Others do go print it out professionally. From their perspective its much faster. They can buy it, download it and get it printed that day, versus having to wait for it to be delivered.

The question is: If you create Ai generated clipart or digital images that you want to sell, which license should you offer your clients for that ? Can you offer commercial rights? Or you would have to stick to personal usage rights? By the way the Ai generator is Midjourney to he more specific. Thanks in advance. For some reason every content creator avoids answering to this question.

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +2

      1) I don't know if you can do that, but you can create different individual wall prints as product templates, and do quick 2-minute manual orders when a customer orders them to combine them together.
      2) There are no issues. For one thing, Canva allows their elements to be used in POD products, both clarified via social media & via their terms of service. And secondly, the images I used were not "Canva's" per-say. They are free images that Canva has included in their app, but that they don't actually own. I used images with a CC0 license. My latest video discusses it. I highly recommend watching it. It sounds confusing, but my video should honestly make it really simple to understand! ua-cam.com/video/IC1GFXiJK7A/v-deo.html

Do you think that etsy will allow me to sell them and they wont suspen or ban my shop?

    Love this. But I’m concerned about infringing copyright. Canva specifically says you can’t use standalone images but have to use elements in combination to create something unique, and how do you insure Pixabay images are free to use for commercial purposes? Thx.

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +12

      A couple of things. One: Canva says that their elements can't be used standalone, but these aren't Canva's elements I used. I used images with a CC0 license (effectively a public domain license), that happen to be hosted by Pixabay, a website that while Canva has now bought, they can't change the CC0 license on. I suspect they are vague about this on purpose but that's just my own personal conspiracy theory. I have a video I made on this a couple of weeks ago, I highly recommend watching it: ua-cam.com/video/IC1GFXiJK7A/v-deo.html
      Two: Canva have confirmed with me that modifying a picture - such as changing it's colors - counts as modifying it. What you couldn't do, is take an image that doesn't have a CC0 license and sell it as-is (but legally, you could with a CC0 license).
      Again I highly recommend watching my previous video - it adds a lot of context!

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому

      This is an issue usually impacting hand-made sellers not POD sellers, because hand-made sellers don't always ship items out on time. That's because with hand-made items, there is often a back-forth with the customer to get them exactly what they'd like. Etsy's algorithm doesn't understand that nuisance and so puts a red flag on their account when they don't ship out at their usual shipping time, due to this customer email dialogue. Being a hand-made seller on Etsy is, tbh, rough. The website policies greatly benefit POD sellers, but they are increasingly hurting hand-made sellers.

    I notice a number of comments to do with using Canva with print on demand. Before jumping in I would strongly advise wider research of the dangers, and what to avoid so as not to risk your business with that. For example, see what the respected Shmmy Morris has to say in his video from a few days ago titled "AVOID Canva For Print on Demand" (his capitalisation - and it is NOT clickbait!)

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому +1

      Canva have been very upfront & transparent with their licensing rules, especially after the drama. They have clarified many times that what their terms of service says, is true. That yes, you can use it for POD, and you get issued a license each time you use a PRO image that allows you to sell it in a new design, as many times as you like onto merch. Each to their own, but I have clarified this directly with Canva many times and have a great relationship with them!
      Interestingly, Canva recently stopped a lot of their affiliate program in the past week, and so I'm sure a lot of people will stop recommending them and be looking to promote something else that does pay commissions. To stay in the program, you now have to make content about Canva at least once a month. Most UA-camrs who were in the program do NOT meet that standard and so probably did not get their contract renewed. I'm definitely not saying that this is related to this video you're talking about at all: I'm just expecting a big uptick in "actually, you shouldn't use Canva anymore - use this instead [insert affiliate link]." A lot of UA-camrs who also didn't get their contracts removed will also now take it as an opportunity to create anti-Canva videos which do get a lot of clicks, without fear of getting kicked out of the affiliate program, haha.
      For full transparency too, I'm still an affiliate partner with them since, well, I love Canva so I just talk about it all the time. Although also, for full transparency, I recommended & talked about Canva for a LONG time (years?) before they accepted me into the affiliate program.

      @@WholesaleTed So are you saying it IS ok to sublicense to a POD company that requires you to do that even though their terms clearly say you can't ("You definitely can’t do these things with any free or Pro Content on Canva: sub-license, ...")? If not then you couldn't use that POD company without violating the agreement. And from Amazon Merch On Demand terms (for example): "... you grant Amazon and its affiliates a non-exclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable license to (1) use, copy, distribute, transmit, make available, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, adapt, modify, translate, reformat and create derivative works of your Submission ... and (2) sublicense these rights ..."
      Are you absolutely certain that Shimmy has interpreted Canva's correspondence with him wrongly and that Canva would be OK with that (and Amazon too - not much use if the POD company don't accept you had the right to agree to what you agree to wrt to Canva!)

    • @WholesaleTed
      @WholesaleTed  10 місяців тому

      Reach out to Canva and clarify for yourself. I didn't watch the video, but if it's talking about Amazon Merch, I don't think you clarified that. I focus on this channel about building my own POD brand with Printful/Printify, not posting onto Amazon Merch. They might have a weird license issue, you might want to check with Canva specifically about that, although that's not a Canva issue, that's a weird Amazon Merch issue.
      I terms of this video though, it's irrelevant. Canva doesn't own these images. They are owned by the public. They are CC0 images. You can do with them what you like, Canva doesn't own them.

      @@WholesaleTed I would never ask one company if another company was OK with their conditions.
      I should have been clearer I was commenting on a few people commenting, not the video, and pointing out the importance of proper research and that different youtubers say different things.
      I expect a lawyer would say to never rely on what people say on the internet and always read the contracts you commit to of both ends properly (in this case Canva's and the POD company's) and check with a lawyer.
      But one thing I definitely would not do or advise is ask Canva about the requirements of the POD companies terms and whether they require you, for example, to grant rights (such as sublicensing) that you don't have the authorisation to do under Canva's terms.
      The thing that perhaps most struck me was Canva's responses to Shimmy saying it's fine "if", the "if" referring to the terms of the POD company's (in this example Amazon's POD service), essentially whether they are compatible with theirs. An example where they are incompatible is if they require you to sublicense, where Canva is very clear that you can't. Canva might not care, but the POD company might.
      And even if today no other POD company has similar terms (I've no idea), tomorrow one might, like if Redbubble update their terms for eg (I haven't read them recently)

However, because of your email settings, the email may have landed in an email inbox you weren't expecting (such as Promotions, or Spam). Because of this, everyone that registers for my ebook is sent to a thank-you page, with an instruction video I kindly ask everyone to watch. It's at the very top of the page. If you watch the video, you'll see 2 things:
      1) That it starts with a 30-second tutorial showing how to locate my ebook in your emails, if it didn't land in your inbox. The video reiterates the ebook was immediately sent, for free, once you submitted your email, and that it does not cost anything - including $1. I also show a support email to message, if you are still having trouble finding the email that contains the free ebook. You can also email us if you'd like, you can email ted@wholesaleted.com to get a copy of the ebook personally sent to you again, for free 🙏
      2) Everyone is then offered an optional $1 7-day trial as a thank-you to my video course not my ebook, my *video course*, The Ecomm Clubhouse. This is NOT my ebook and it is reiterated multiple times that it is NOT my ebook, it is OPTIONAL, you DON'T need to register for it to get my ebook (as it's already been sent to you). 🙏
      I kindly ask everyone who registers to please watch the video on the thank-you page. The ebook is free and if everyone watches the first 30-seconds of that video, they will see how to find the email with their free ebook if the email was filtered to a different email folder 🙏

      I'll be honest, I don't think that is a fair assessment of this channel. I have multiple videos on this channel which are comparison videos, that compare the different POD websites, and one of the comparison points is exactly that, if you sell on a third party website, you risk being shutdown should you make the wrong mistakes, and that you lack control because the third party websites are in control.. In fact, my course, The Ecomm Clubhouse, spends considerable amount of time laboring that point, which is why it discusses opening up your own store, and building a brand on the side. So I will be honest, but I do not agree with this critique 🙏

      2) I answer comments from viewers with answers to their more advanced complex questions, for free, without charging anything for it, as I do not charge for consulting, or even offer any sort of consulting.
      3) I have even created videos discussing topics & subjects of which, at the time I uploaded them, literally no information online existed for them, and I was the only person actually adding this information to the internet for free for people. For example, I was the first person to explain how to use Canva to create images in high enough DPI for printing: ua-cam.com/video/ohDJ1nF_78k/v-deo.html
      4) I offer in-depth tutorial videos as an optional paid course anyone can choose to take, that nobody has to. I do not advertise it as a miracle way to make money, just as a convenient way to get tutorials grouped without the fuss of sorting through random videos, and even offer a 7-day refund policy, so that anyone who doesn't actually like them, can claim a refund, no questions asked.
      And so no. Given my huge bank and library of tutorials I have added to the internet, for free, I don't think it's fair to call me a grifter, and that's all I have to say on that 🙏🙏🙏
