My favourite number 1 thing to do in BKK …. Jump on random red buses ( the ones with no windows and jump off with no plan when it feels like a challenge or ya see something cool, funny or interesting.
I found myself one day end up in Korat after random buses and boats took me to Victory monument where I jumped on a mini van not knowing where Korat was .
Spend 4 days there including 2 in a village
    Best time ever 😂

Hey Chris, thanks for the Ekkamai recommendations . We had a great night out following your suggestions, and even made some new friends at Tuba. One recommendation for you in return. Bankok Banjom was closed on a Monday night, so we stumbled by accident into Akanee Thai restaurant in the modern development across the road. OMG, this was the best Thai food we’ve tasted so far. Really subtle flavours, great service, and even some reasonably-priced interesting wine available. Highly recommend the pork and preserved bamboo shoot, and the deep fried bass with fried garlic and turmeric sauce!
Today we’re going to try the Thonglor places. 😁

Great show as usual: excellent editing, nice flow, entertaining and informative at the same time, it will be hard to beat Mark Wiens when it comes to the subscriber count, but this is by far the most enjoyable and interesting Thailand channel on You Tube. No fluff, no showing of the pretty Thai ladyfriend or plugging the nightlife, just plain interesting and enjoyable content for first and even experienced travellers to Thailand. Triple thumbs up for you, excellent.

Loving this countdown so much! I can't wait to see you chillin with my other favorite Mark somewhere great! RedDoor Hotel in Ekkamai was the place my partner and I landed for 10 days to break up the trip from India to Vietnam. Bkk was always a layover place until the world shut down. We were supposed to fly March 17,2020.. We made it to the airport. Then Immigration for the next 17 hours. Over the next 7 months I fell madly in love with the BKK, a bit freaked out but the city took great care of us! We moved about 15 times cause each hood is so different and amazing.Thai massages, amazing food and Retired Working for you gave us all we needed to stay sane. The channel was just a baby then. Have been to most of these spots, but most have changed so much. Can't wait to get back. Thanks for all your hard work. You are a rockstar! We are currently in the Atacama Desert in Northern Chile. Very interesting people and places but the food is not my thang and it hasn't rained in like forever so everything smells a bit funky. Still have much to see here but soooo jonesing for Thai food. Thanks for keeping me grounded. lol

Another great video, Chris. Here's my 2 cents though. First, at 6:08, it's not good to say "Sawasdee krap" to a monk. They'll know you're farang and overlook it, but if you want to be respectful like Thai people say "Namatsakan krap", or say "satu" along with a wai. Next, you really should have mentioned the main bus terminal - tons of people use it to travel all over Thailand. Lastly, I love Gateway mall. It's literally connected to the BTS station by a short walkway, it's smaller and way more chill than most other malls in Bangkok, tt has a very convenient inexpensive grocery store on the ground level. Gateway has a really good variety or restaurants and also a really fantastic play place called Harborland for kids on the top floor.

For oldtimers, Ekamai was known as Southern/Eastern Bus Terminal where you can travel to the South or the East on a tour bus either aircon or regular bus. In the old days, Hua Hin (by train) and Bang Saen by bus from Ekamai were two popular seaside destinations for Thais. If you want to travel to the North/Northeast (Isan), you must board at Mor Chit Bus Terminal. The Southern/Eastern Bus Terminal is now moved away from Ekamai to an outskirt of Bangkok on Thonburi side for many years now. BTW, Wat Thatthong is reputed to be the biggest temple to hold cremation rite as there are about 20 pavilions where you can place coffins and hold nightly cremation rite for this specific purpose. Cremation rite lasts from 3 to 7 nights before the dead is cremated in a modern electric furnace as you can see in this video.

    Hi Chris,
If you keep walking further down soi 42, cross the intersection and walkup to the parking lot with restaurants (opposite the old Bangkok University city campus)
    1. There’s a couple who make the best Tom Yum Gai in all of Thailand
    2. The one next to them have the pork stew thing that has been cooking for years as well.
    3. And the last one has noodles with chicken. I highly recommend all the food especially the tom yum couple.
Living on Rama 4 or petchburi is a good hack. Chops of rental prices by a 30 percent. Love your videos. I continue to live in Bkk through your videos. 🙏❤️

Jajangmyeon. Mmm. Yummy. I didn’t understand at first that this isn't original Korean food, but rather sold only at Korean restaurants serving Korean Chinese food. I always got it with a side dish of raw onion cut into little squares, eaten straight, like kimchekitchen. Eyewatering.

My favorite is probably Udom Suk, just because it's where I first stayed at.
It's not a touristy area, reasonably priced condos, easy to get into and out of the city and of course the locals are very welcoming. So much so that the chef of a bar & restaurant called You32 offered me a ride home after his shift ended.
Shout-out to Mark who turned a 20 minute walk into a 3 minute motorbike ride!

Wow cool. Here's Chris walking by where I live. I chose this neighborhood because I stayed here 20 years ago and thought it was chill and convenient, if not glamorous. Just moved back here recently on my older-guy Bangkok stint, and I know almost nothing. I learned some tips from this vid. I am all over that khao soi! And I didn't realize all that was further down 42.
What I don't like about Ekkamai is that there's almost no street food around the station. Unlike Thonglor, which has dozens of options and some amazing somtam, Ekkamai's dead but for a few fruit and weiner vendors.
I caught Spicy Mark early in the morning outside his little restaurant, but that must have been a very lucky run-in. And the Gateway is indeed a pretty weird and lame mall. But for living near, it's great. Big supermarket, HomePro, Daiso, restaurants and coffee, just the basics you need and no high fashion at all. So no real crowds other than when St. Andrew's kids get out mid-afternoon. I would NOT rank Ekkamai over other spots lower on your list. It's a decent place to live (with a TON of traffic) and a bus station. But it was an interesting addition.

I lived in Ekkamai 20 some years ago before it gentrified. I was a bit further down on soi 30 (right before the canal) and way way down into the soi maze. I lived with a thai girl and it was just a little non-air conditioned, squat toilet, apartment for about $60 a month. In the entire time i was there, i never once saw another white guy. I was quite the curiosity at first, but eventually people in the neighborhood would recognize me.
There was this old gas station awning between soi 28 and soi 30 right on the main road. The gas station was long since deserted but a little mom and pop restaurant/bar sprung up under the awning every night and stayed open until the wee hours of the morning. Most of the clientel were thai working girls and the accompanying staff that went along with those places. Sometimes we would drink for hours at this little place. Some great memories were had, haha.
The gas station got taken down and now its a giant condo building.
You can find these delicious mom and pop places everywhere. You just need to get far enough off the main roads.
