The primary reason for doing this is to avoid "double NAT" ie. your virgin router is performing NAT and then your Deco is also performing NAT behind that router which is generally undesirable. Hi there, I live in a large house and plan on using 3 routers (upstairs, downstairs and back of house). Running a Lan line isnt an issue. The issue I am having is what connects where. I'd like it set up so that if one router faults it won't effect the other routers. Is this possible. If so, How? I hope you can help.
If your using 3 other routers then you have a couple of options... 1 one port each on the mainrouter for each of your other routers ( each router on different floors will have thier own connection to the main and will therefore not affect eachother if one goes down.. though you will be better off setting these up as accesspoints if you are using WiFi connection. ) 2.. 1 port from main router to a switch and plug in each additional router to that and configure each router accordingly
Hi I want to add another router to my hub to run Wi-fi to an outhouse in my garden. If I complete these steps, can I still use the original hub 3 for internet and have devices in the other LAN ports?
No the hub part of the device os essentially completely disabled and only acts as modem... You would need to do what he did in this video. Accept in this video the router he used becomes his "main router", from here you would run a cable to a switch, AP, or another router in your out-house.
Hi there. I'm trying to extend my network and have the Hub 3 feed the network downstairs and the extender provided by VM that enables a good wifi upstairs but i also want to increase my wifi range downstairs to the rear kitchen which is showing really poor wifi. Can i add a secondary router and also use the VM Hub 3 plus the VM extender?

I’ve recently changed from BT to virgin media and will be receiving my router soon. I just really dislike the fact you cant have the wifi mode and modem mode 2 in 1. Right now i have the BT Hub5 and thats in the living room and we have connected another wifi router as an access point to help boost the connection to places where it cannot. But with Virgin i assume they will not allow us to use their router in modem mode and wifi mode to allow to use the virgin media in the living room as one access point and our extended wifi router as another access point if in modem mode. In this case; can i use our BT Hub5 as an access point in our living and our extended wifi router in our hallway and keep the virgin media in modem mode. Is this possible to do with the BT hub5? Is there any other way i could get the modem maybe purchase a separate one modem or something where i can keep the virgin media as in wifi mode but also use my wifi extender as another access point?
Hi, see 2:26 plug your Tivo box into one of your LAN ports on your new router. I've never used a Sonos but if it is wireless only, connect it to your new wireless network that you would create on your new router (I did not show how to create a wireless network in this video but it is usauly straight forward)
Maybe a silly question but does this Improve the speed of the hub 3? I am paying for 200mb broadband and I don't get anything near that becuase the 3 is so poor. The old hub used to be great. The WiFi isn't great around the house either. Will that sort that too? Thanks in advance.
Try plugging in to the hub via ethernet to see if you get closer to 200. Assuming the router you will be using is reasonable spec this should help as it disables routing and wifi on the hub and therefore decreases load on the device.
I’m having such a bad time with my Asus dsl68u I have connected my hub 3 to it all configured into modem mode I get the full 350 from super hub but no where near from the ASUs it is a dsl so I’ve had to configure wan port 4 but not getting close to the full speed

Your question has many answers and avenues! Are you allowed to change settings on the virgin hub as it may be serving other flats? What is the make and model of the netgear router and is it yours or the landlords? Do you know if the signal is dropping out due to wifi range issues or is it when you are close to the netgear aswel? Does this happen on multiple devices or just one? Does the broadband signal drop out when you connect a pc/laptop via ethernet to the netgear. How many users/devices are using the hub & netgear at any one time? As for purchasing advice, I'm not a fan of consumer grade gear without installing 3rd party firmware so depending on your IT skills? this would be my router of choice after modifying it; > ua-cam.com/video/MwPbHuOjgSc/v-deo.html < linksys ea6350v3

I know this is an old video, but I need help. I've configured the virgin router in so many ways, changed the DNS settings to the best and I still get loads of lag playing online. Doesn't matter what games I play online, there's so much lag. I tried modem mode with my RockSpace (Linux) router and nothing happens. So frustrated at Virgin, they don't help. Any help would be greatly appreciated 👍🏻.
The Virgin Super Hub 3 is notorious for lag spikes in gaming as it has a flaw in the Intel Puma chip, so its not good news unfortunately. Virgin has managed to largely ignore this and get away with it. Sorry I can't help you further with lag other than follow some basic principles of: keep the network wired only for gaming and make sure other users are not hogging the bandwidth otherwise a new ISP is on the cards.
Hi, I've just switched from BT to Virgin, is there a way in which I can use my BT router as a second router at a different part of my house? So for example, if I went closer to the BT router, my device would automatically start using it, instead of having different SSIDs and having to manually switch WiFi.
Yes, this may be possible. Try changing your BT router's wifi settings to the same as your Virgin Hub's. Also make sure they are on the same subnet and remember to turn off DHCP on your BT router. *as this is an unmanaged setup, it is up to the client to decide when to switch SSIDs.
Great video. I have seen some videos where by people do not put the pub in modem mode but simply plug the router in and I was wondering what the best option was and why
For my case that would defeat the need for the mesh to work at its best, it’s just another wireless signal to compete with between your own four walls.
@@garybarham3992 I was just wondering. I've already set my router up and had switched my VM hub to modem. I'm using an asus rt-ac3200 router but was researching what was the best cable to use as I'm planning on moving the router to another point in the house. During this research I come across some videos where they didn't change it to modem so I started to question if I had done it correctly that was all.
@@Smudger96 the chances are you are not running more than 100m and so a LAN cable certified to CAT5e up to 100m full speed or CAT6 unto 50m full speed will suffice for most normal use and internet service provider speeds of up to 1Gbps. Both cable type have twisted pairs but the CAT6 is is more stiff due to the plastic separators so bending the cable is a little more difficult. For short distances the price difference might not be an issue to go for a CAT6.

dchp is actually automatic ip so, when setting it up use one pppop (i think thats what it called) after that you will be redirected to the asus control panel. On the left choose WAN and change the type to automatic ip like he did in the video. Then put your host name in again and change authentication from off to one of the others listed. input your host name, password for your host and then apply changes and restart both routers.
You need another router because when you use modem mode in the vm box, the router functionality is disabled. You really only need to use modem mode if you want to use your own router and network products in your home
I have a ps4, virgin blocked my ip or was it sony neither admit to it error code NP-40833-8 can't sign into PSN so now I want my hub 3 in modem mode, then purchase a router will this work?
Super useful video, thanks. I was going to buy a new router so I don't have to reprogram all my smart devices every time I change ISP (lighting, heating thermostat, speakers, TV, laptops and phones), and also to improve Plusnet's shady wifi signal. In 6 weeks I'll switch from Plusnet to Virgin anyway. Was going to get the TP-Link AC2800 Router so I’m future-proofed for different kinds of internet/ISP, which I presume means I need to use the new Virgin superhub in modem mode, so thanks for helpful instructions here. So, will it be more simple to set up the the TP-Link and reprogram all my devices to it now (while still on Plusnet), and just switch the input into the TP link from plusnet’s DSL to the Virgin set us as a modem, or to wait to switch to the new router when virgin arrives and set the whole lot up all up at once? Basically, is switching input into the router extra faff? Thanks a lot :-)
Doesn't appear that TLJ replies to comments, but maybe someone else will ... I have held of doing this as I have a question, in modem mode, do I lose the ability to use the Virgin Hub 4 as a hub/switch, ie the Ethernet ports? I want to use the functionality of my Orbi Router, but I don't want it physically located right next to the Virgin Hub, however, the Virgin Hub is next to my PlayStation/TV/Sat Receiver etc, so I use the Ethernet ports. At ~2min 40secs, I think the answer is that I lose this ability, but I just want to make sure :( I guess the logical answer is that the Virgin Hub is no longer providing IP connectivity in Modem mode, so it effectively means the Ethernet ports become redundant, other than as a connection to the newly added router. (I have so many things plugged into power in this corner, I really don't want yet another switch, or Router plugged in here)

Great video however I’m a novice and now I am entering ISP of new device into the browser and it says problem loading page. ISP is same on old router out of default. Stuck 😩
Probably not, there are other methods to changing your IP from virgin. It can actually change at any point (but rarely does) usually if they are doing local maintenance/upgrades on your circuit or you could look into changing your MAC address
If its your public ip address he is D-Dos'ing your screwed... Your best bet is to call your isp and report it to see if they can provide you a new IP address.

Will swapping to the super hub 3 be simple or will it ruin my life? I'm hesitant to start because I'm not sure how much of a ball ache it's going to be. What do you say?
Can the telephone cable stay in the modem in the top 2 phone section or does it need to go into the new router??
This is a great question which sadly I do not know the answer too! Hopefully someone else will and comment here ..
The telephone cable will still go to this Virgin hub. Your own router cannot handle the Virgin phone service.
Apologies for being really dumb. VM installed new broadband in my home today. I have attached my Deco TP 5's TP link to the modem and all works ok . VM engineer suggested i should be running their router in modem mode. Is this really necessary? What is / are the advantages ? Any performance improvements / issues such as conflicts between the VM router and TP system? Your video helpfully shows how to do It but i don't want to mess up something that's working! Thank you.
The primary reason for doing this is to avoid "double NAT" ie. your virgin router is performing NAT and then your Deco is also performing NAT behind that router which is generally undesirable. Also if you have a working setup then I wouldn't change it especially if you are not confident! "if it aint broke then dont fix it" might apply here?
@@TechLevelJedi Thank you. I agree that generally "if it aint broke then don't fix it" makes great sense !

Extremely clear and concise. Thanks!
thank you for this, very clear video. I have just one question, does this mean when changing the WAN settings that you no longer need a username and password? Does Virgin just not need this? I'm used to getting a username and password from the ISP

1 one port each on the mainrouter for each of your other routers ( each router on different floors will have thier own connection to the main and will therefore not affect eachother if one goes down.. though you will be better off setting these up as accesspoints if you are using WiFi connection. )
2.. 1 port from main router to a switch and plug in each additional router to that and configure each router accordingly
Hi
I want to add another router to my hub to run Wi-fi to an outhouse in my garden.
@@tonymancino293 Hi Tony.. Given from what your setup sounds like.. You would be best off having an AP from your main Router in your kitchen (wired)

Does putting SH into modem mode disable the Ethernet ports and telephony ports?

What are the benefits of changing it to modem mode?
This is to connect your own Wi-Fi router so this hub only works as a coax-to-Ethernet device.
What if you have Sonos and Tivo boxes where do you connect them
Hi, see 2:26 plug your Tivo box into one of your LAN ports on your new router. I've never used a Sonos but if it is wireless only, connect it to your new wireless network that you would create on your new router (I did not show how to create a wireless network in this video but it is usauly straight forward)
What do I do if there isn’t an option to select dhcp client?
what options do you have ?
Is there no way I can do this set up for wireless devices phones firestick etc
Maybe a silly question but does this Improve the speed of the hub 3? I am paying for 200mb broadband and I don't get anything near that becuase the 3 is so poor. The old hub used to be great. The WiFi isn't great around the house either. Will that sort that too?
Thanks in advance.
Try plugging in to the hub via ethernet to see if you get closer to 200. Assuming the router you will be using is reasonable spec this should help as it disables routing and wifi on the hub and therefore decreases load on the device.
Cable will always carry higher speed than wifi connection.
great video thanks. is there a way to do this but keep your virgin hub working on the wifi ?thanks
I’m having such a bad time with my Asus dsl68u I have connected my hub 3 to it all configured into modem mode I get the full 350 from super hub but no where near from the ASUs it is a dsl so I’ve had to configure wan port 4 but not getting close to the full speed

@@TechLevelJedi So I want to make my Hub 3 into a modem which will be connecting to a gaming router via ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs.

Haven't looked but if there is a bridge mode then this would be what you want. So the BT router becomes just an Access Point.
For short distances the price difference might not be an issue to go for a CAT6.

hi there, could you please tell me if i add a eero wifi extender to my virgin router and set my virgin router to modem mode , can i still use my virgin tivo box ? many thanks
I am not familiar with the eero kit, but if it is named as "wireless extender" then I doubt it, you need something with routing functionality.
Hi, does anyone know how to do this with an asus router? struggling to change the wan to dhcp
dchp is actually automatic ip so, when setting it up use one pppop (i think thats what it called) after that you will be redirected to the asus control panel. On the left choose WAN and change the type to automatic ip like he did in the video. Then put your host name in again and change authentication from off to one of the others listed. input your host name, password for your host and then apply changes and restart both routers.
Just what I needed thanks
You're welcome, glad this video helped you
Why do you need another router? Is hub 3.0 slower or not good?
You need another router because when you use modem mode in the vm box, the router functionality is disabled.
You really only need to use modem mode if you want to use your own router and network products in your home

At ~2min 40secs, I think the answer is that I lose this ability, but I just want to make sure :(
I guess the logical answer is that the Virgin Hub is no longer providing IP connectivity in Modem mode, so it effectively means the Ethernet ports become redundant, other than as a connection to the newly added router.
(I have so many things plugged into power in this corner, I really don't want yet another switch, or Router plugged in here)
Thank you. Really nice.
