  • On August 23, 2018, the National Portrait Gallery recognized the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein (Aug. 25, 1918 - Oct. 14, 1990) by displaying a special portrait.
According to museum notes, "the photograph shows Bernstein exhibiting his electrifying conducting style, as captured by the French humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) during a rehearsal at Carnegie Hall. Taken in 1960, this candid image reveals Bernstein’s hallmark dynamism."
The photo is a promised gift to the museum from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser and was on display through August 26 in the Gallery's “Celebrate” space on the first-floor.
