National Portrait Gallery Displays Leonard Bernstein Photo on 100th Birthday

On August 23, 2018, the National Portrait Gallery recognized the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist Leonard Bernstein (Aug. 25, 1918 - Oct. 14, 1990) by displaying a special portrait.
According to museum notes, "the photograph shows Bernstein exhibiting his electrifying conducting style, as captured by the French humanist photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) during a rehearsal at Carnegie Hall. Taken in 1960, this candid image reveals Bernstein’s hallmark dynamism."
The photo is a promised gift to the museum from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser and was on display through August 26 in the Gallery's “Celebrate” space on the first-floor.
