“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games,” Ernest Hemingway
Two of those three combined in this race. The occasional goat encounter could make it a 3fer.

My grandparents lived about two miles north of Catamount Reservoir. It was somewhat annoying in June and July because you could hear the engines roaring all day on the qualifiers and race day, which drove their dogs crazy too.

For a casual drive it isn't really that bad when people follow the signs instead of cutting the speed limit in half. A visit to the top can get cut short when there is a huge grey wall coming toward you and lighting up randomly. Just make sure to get your free donut before going back down. They're a bit different when made that high above sea level.

Just looked it up... fastest time at Pikes Peak is under 8 minutes, by an electric car! Guess it makes sense, since such a powertrain wouldn't be as affected by altitude as air/fuel rigs... And there have been only 7 deaths in the race's 105 year history; four were motorcyclists, two were drivers, and one race official. Most have been in the last thirty years.

I live in Colorado Springs at the base of Pikes Peak. The race was held today. It was delayed by an hour and they couldn't race all the way to the summit because of snow and ice at the top, it was 80F down here. I went up and watched the race quite a few years ago before the road was paved. It was crazy what some of those guys were doing. Driving up in a car as a tourist I consider fun. Just take your time and enjoy the challenge. The donuts they sell at the top are an awesome greasy, sugary delight.

Several times taking the cog railway up, it would be 70F at the bottom, and snowing when you got to the top. Clouds blowing by below you. Don't wear shorts even in summer if you do that trip.

There are roads like that in Southern Ireland where its 600 feet straight down and the only protection is a two foot high slate stone wall. But this video really reminded me of western Crete. No guard rail, big drop, asphalt breaking off at the edges, and herds of goats.

A big section used to be unpaved, too, which I *think* was towards the top.
Edit: I just saw that part about paving it. Leave it up to the Sierra Club to f*ck everything up. They refused to allow a new bridge to be built in Stillwater, MN. So thousands of cars would be crossing a bridge built in the 20s/30s, and still having to go up every 30 minutes while you would sit ON THE BRIDGE waiting for the boat to cross under, feeling it shake while thousands of tons of steel loomed over your head. That entire group needs to go. They've done more harm than good to the world. (We now have a fully concrete bridge 1/4 mile down the road, after the government stepped in, which doesn't have to go up or down, is 4 lanes, and gives an amazing view. The old bridge is a biking and walking area.)

Erosion from the gravel road. While a 14,000 ft mountain that has been eroding for millions of years, and will continue to do so, into the same water ways. Those people couldn't think their way out of a paper bag. Speaking of which, It's the same mental issues that years ago wanted to switch to plastic bags from paper to save trees. Now look what that's caused.

I'm in Colorado Springs just down the road from the base of Pikes Peak. When you come here for the 1st time just walking or going up a flight of stairs feels like your lungs are on fire and it takes a good 2-3 weeks just to get used to the air. They still have the race annually but they suspended the motorcycle race after that guy died. And coming down is even worse cause it will take you several hours to get down cause you have to pull over to the side of the road the cool off your brakes cause you have to use them a lot coming down.

Fun Fact: Pikes Peak is not a race track, it's a race course. A race track is a permanent installation, Pikes Peak is not: it's a public road when not used for racing. In the same way, the Monaco circuit is not a race track, but a race course, same goes for the Singapore and Baku circuits.

We drove up it many years ago and my knuckles were white the entire time, as my husband was driving and I was on the passenger side looking down the 1000 foot drop offs. There is an area out where I live in Canada called Kananaskis, It goes through the mountains and back down into the foothills. I have driven it on a perfectly early spring day where it is 20 C in Calgary and when you get into the Kananaskis area it drops suddenly to 2 C and a almost white out blizzard for 100 km then as you get into the foothills it becomes rain and 10 C and meanwhile back in the city it is still 20 C. Carlin, the champ killed on the bike recently was bringing another huge element to the race when Ducati wanted him to become a factory rider where they wanted to become the first factory motorcycle lteam ajd he was on par the break records on the not yet relapsed and very anticipated Ducati V4R Streetfigbtdr, ajd factory stock bike with 235 ho . Everyone followed the checkpoint times and he was well above a world record setting pace with just a couple turns left and seconds away his wife and children and Team Ducati we’re waiting at the finish life to congratulate him . With seconds left everyone assumed he finished but the big timers all over remained running , after 15 seconds or so they sensed something happend maybe it died or fell on the Yosef of the hill expecting to run around the first bed. And see him off his bike looking at something but when they all rounded the corner it was jsut silence , nothing to be seen but standing near turn15e his wife looked back up at the finishe line and the clock was still running . At 152 you can see for Avery long ways none the stack, no sign of hind not a sound , dead silence . His wife looked at the tram leader to ask what’s going on and he slowly looking at this huge edge and he started slowly walking towards the edge and transitioning to a run to the edge and his boss man screamed for someone to call lifeigjt

It may be an apples to oranges comparison but there are more drivers & spectators killed in Isle of Man. Spectator limitations to certain areas of Pikes Peak are being removed this year. While Isle of Man is starting to seriously consider limitations. Both seem pretty insane to me.
