  • Staying out of Ukraine, despite immense pressure from the US and the EU, was one of the two best things that India did in terms of foreign policy during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s last term, says Amit Gupta, senior adviser, Forum of Federations in Ottawa.
The advantages of that go beyond getting cheap oil from Russia. It also gave India the leeway to navigate its own foreign policy.
“The second one, which I am very proud of, is vaccine maitri,” says Gupta, who’s a former faculty of the US Air Force Air War College, and works mostly on international security, pop culture, and politics. He’s also coached the War College soccer team.
“Because if you look at that, while the US and the west were hoarding vaccine supplies and raw materials, India went out an gave it to people as far away as Antigua, and neighbours like Bangladesh,” he says. The fact that India did this for free in many cases is very very creditable, he asserts. Until it stopped because the US cut off the supply of raw materials, he adds.
The two areas where India didn’t do so well include dealing with China and having too many expectations from the United States, believes Gupta.
“There’s no sense of imagination left on how to deal with China. The positions are very rigid, and we are losing out, because China’s the behemoth in Asia,” he says.
Rattling off figures, he notes that China has 870 odd billion dollars of trade with ASEAN, 780 billion with the EU, 670 billion with the U.S., and about 300 billion with the Japanese and the Koreans.
‘And the Japanese and the Chinese and the Koreans hate each other. But the one thing they say is that nothing gives us greater joy than to make money off our enemies,” says Gupta. “India’s trade with China is about a 130 billion or so.”
All these countries say they have valid territorial disputes with China, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a trading arrangement with it.”
Another “minor miss,” he says, “is that you still have an unruly neighbourhood.”
If you take out Bangladesh and to some extent Sri Lanka, India does not have a sense of amity in the region, which would allow you to expand your foreign policy and encourage greater economic cooperation, he feels.
How does the huge trade deficit with China, which applies not just to India but to almost every nation that China deals with, impact relations?
“The problem is that India (and the US) talk about greater reciprocity and soon, but when I talk to Indian manufacturers, they say the problem isn’t China, the problem is India,” he says.
“Because until your goods leave the gate of the factory, you are competitive with China. But they minute they go out and all the state and national taxes get slapped on, you suddenly non-competitive with the Chinese.”
The main issue? The Chinese think big, India doesn’t. They have reached out where other people don’t want to go,’ says Gupta, noting how a tiny place like Tierra Del Fuego has only two car dealerships, Chery, which is Chinese, and Hyundai, which is korean. And how Brazil is awash with Chinese cars.
“Another major issue is that the Chinese have put a huge emphasis on education, while India as pushed education into a downward spiral,” he adds. Apart from scaling up top notch Universities, the three countries which are filing the most patents each year in the world are China, Japan and South Korea, he notes.
The conversation then moves on to India-US relations, the insignificance of the QUAD when compared to AUKUS. “Why is it that three White Countries (US, UK, Australia) are determining the security architecture of the Indo Pacific?” asks Gupta.
Watch the full interview to know the answer to that question, as well as get intriguing and unconventional takes on India’s relationship with the US, UK and Russia, the issues plaguing the Indian diaspora, the American (and Canadian) hypocrisy over the Khalistanis, why India should under no circumstances ease its liability laws to allow American companies like Westinghouse sell it nuclear reactors, and finally, can China and India kiss and make up?

The funny part is u all believe the world as an order. If someone is economically mighty we just have to believe them because they are number 1 despite killing our soldiers in borders , occupying our land. Despite being poor we object to it. So you are saying that India don't have right to say as it's poor. India is much pratical than projected here. We banned tiktok which is so useless, there is no use of it except time waste. India need tons of money to build infrastructure to catch up with China. Who still invest money in infrastructure today? China and Japan, but China can offer much cheaper arrangement, something that India with its lack of money, need the most. India also need machinery to build its industry, and China is one of the producers for it, and also the cheapest one, something again, that India with its lack of capital, will benefit the most from it. More importantly, India need investment, and China has plenty of money to invest, and certainly China is or maybe was interested in India. But after how India government treated several Chinese companies that heavily invested in India, I doubt more Chinese companies will follow suit.

India needs to cooperate with China to accelerate its transformation into a global manufacturing power, with seamless integration with global supply chain.
It has long been China's stance that "Put the border disputes aside, let us cooperate on everything else. "
An emerging power like India cannot let its development be kidnapped by border disputes.
Look at Japan and S. Korea. These two East Asia neighbors can sit down for negotiations and cooperations, despite of their long time disputes over the sovereignty of the Liancourt Rocks in the sea between them. That is political wisdom and diplomatic maturity on full display.
Other countries such as China and India can definitely learn from S. Korea and Japan to manage their difference on borders, LAC, or whatever, and develop their relationship for the benefit of the economy and people.
The US, with its dirty "divide and conquer" tricks, doesn't want to see BRICS countries developing fast together. They'd rather see the two neighboring Asian giants fighting, hurting and weakening each other, to maintain their domination in Indo-Pacific for their own geopolitical interests.

    • @be12
      @be12 7 місяців тому +1

      A sane voice.
India had no specific strike forces on the northern border, and the posture was completely defensive, patrolled mostly by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police or ITBP. Things can still be kept calm on a disputed border if the place and timing of patrols around that border is known to both sides. If things are kept calm for a few years, then mutual confidence can build up and perhaps a more permanent agreement could be reached in time. One can see a lot of mutually beneficial things on the plate, including trade and investment.
There's one problem - salami slicing. When it suits them, like when Xi Jinping last visited India, the Chinese patrol forward and then refuse to leave, which is basically occupying new land. Then it seems that they are talking out of both sides of their mouth. That's when fatal clashes occur on the border.
_There is no way forward if the Chinese continue to do this_. India has not yet gotten into a common defensive pact with other nations on China's periphery and had not fully committed to the QUAD which is why AUKUS happened.
Now, we may have to align with other nations for a defensive alliance.

Learning from China means making revolutionary changes in land policies, basic education, infrastructure construction, and many other aspects. This means confiscating a considerable portion of the cake belonging to interest groups and returning it to the people. You can imagine how much resistance India will encounter to make such changes, and that is what you will face. There is a Chinese saying: 功成不必在我,功成必定有我. The meaning is that great achievements do not necessarily have to be achieved by me in the end, but there must be my full effort in them. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity that India would never miss to grab more land from a weakened China. When India gets beaten up and lost the war that they had started despite all these advantages, not to mentioned military supplies from Israel and USA (Research on "Israel aid to India in the 1962 war" and "America's aid to India in the 1962 war" and "JFK’s Forgotten Crisis"), she cried to the entire world and plays the victim. Till now, India never dares to disclose the "Henderson Brooks and Neville Maxwell report on the 1962 war" even after 60+ years. And when the report was leaked into the internet momentarily in 2014, India demanded the report to be purged permanently from the internet citing "national security"....just like BBC's documentary on the 2002 Gujarat Massacre and Modi's involvement. You have to got to wonder why🤔🤥😏🥱A nation without integrity and honesty and a spawning ground for all the scam callers has no credibility on the Global Stage😏.

China felt awe with technology, economy and social life in west back in 80s. Then they bow their head down, learn from the west and adapt it into Chinese society. Pick the best part, and discard the bad ones. After decades of adopting western system and knowledge, China becomes what today, the largest market, largest manufacturer, largest purchasing power, and largest technology innovator.
Meanwhile if you look at India medias, they are all filled with jealousy and blames. Brits took India gold. China took India market. USA took India freedom. etc. This kind of "I never wrong" mentality only hold Indians back from advancing ahead. Gov tried to spread illusion in Indian's mind that India is catching up with China and USA very soon is pretty hilarious. China economy alone is 12 times over than India, and US is even larger. When you look at the speed, China and USA is running even way faster for India to catch. Not to mention India embrace capitalism with monopoly which drives poor people to become poorer. In the end, India can be proud because they have 1 billionaires, while the rest of people can't afford to climb to middle class. Meanwhile China annual tourism was anticipated by US, EU and the rest of the World. EU even goes further to hire Chinese police in order to make Chinese tourists feel safe. Even back in 90s at peak height of US economy, you never see any country hiring US police to protect US tourists.

Indians are defeated by the Chinese in the 1962 war. It was the most humiliating defeat in history if you were to examine all the facts that were involved in the war. This is the ultimate proof that war tactics/strategy/determination/will power/bravery triumphs over superior weapons/technology/cowardice.
    1) The Chinese were having the "great Chinese famine" from 1958 to 1962. China was too weak to defend itself.
    2) India had Israeli and American support in the form of supplies/weaponry. Research on "Israel aid to India in the 1962 war" and "America's aid to India in the 1962 war" and "JFK’s Forgotten Crisis".
    3) The Sino-Soviet split from 1960 - 1962. China had nothing. No weapons, guns, artillery supplies from either Western and Soviet and no food (serious famine).
    4) Despite all these advantages, India lost.
    5) There are no excuses for such a humiliating defeat. That is why India is so desperate to have the "Henderson Brooks and Neville Maxwell report of the 1962 war" concealed forever and also to hide which country is the true aggressor of the war. Then PM Scott Morrison got pressured by Biden to buy old submarine, so he tore the French contract and went a head with 1996 design nuclear submarine, which will arrive in Australia, assembled, and ready for testing as soon as 2050. China will be testing proton cannon at that time!

Every country has unresolved issues with their neighbors. It is the leadership's wisdom to prioritize issues. However, I do argue that India's top priority must be economic development and large scale job creation. A country with a lot of unemployed young people is sitting on a volcano. India also needs to build water works and infrastructure to protect their farmers from global warming.
Logic tells us that when your economy is stronger, you have more leverage dealing with your neighbors.
If India wants to solve the border dispute with China before economic relations can improve, they are doing it backwards.

During the time of Mao, Zhou Enlai offered to exchange Arunachal Pradesh for Aksai Chin to reach a peaceful and lasting settlement of the border dispute. But Nehru rejected the offer. Fast forward to today, Xi is still making the same offer but what about Modi? It is pointless to argue who owns Aksai Chin(AC) and who owns Arunachal Pradesh(AP) historically but to accept the reality that AC(38,000sq km) is now under China control while AP(84,000 sq km) under India. While China can claim that AP was part of Southern Tibet annexed by the British who ruled India when the the Qing Dynasty was in mortal decline and so was AC, this is now "water under the bridge..." It will not change the reality on the ground...Personally I am more inclined to the Chinese claim as the population and ethnicity of the people living in both AC and AP are Tibetan. But for the sake of a lasting peace and good neighbourhood, China should make some concession..

I see many anti-Indian comments, sadly. The border disputes have fostered nationalism on both sides.
Gupta wisely said that these disputes should not deter collaboration in other areas. China said it too. As two most populous neighbours, it's inevitable that sooner or later, the need for markets for their growing manufacturing industry will be overwhelming.
It was the same for Japan, as the first wave, spawning SK, Taiwan and Singapore in the second wave, which in turn catalyses China next.
India is next and it could be explosive if it collaborates with China. It's through investments from these countries that you develop a manufacturing base and an ecosystem of supply chains.
It's really not about India vs China but India + China that will be a big part of the Eurasia miracle.
