    Papa,
Beautiful. Just improbably beautiful! I have a soft spot in my little black heart for videos that make me smile. My current smile is a full on ear to ear grin 😋.

That is so so cool! You made the most out of that cracked up piece of Osage 👍 that illusion is so very cool. I think you should make a video on how to do it👍
Thank you so much for mentioning me!!!

Well thank you Luie! I was waiting for the right piece of wood to use and all this time it was sitting under one of my benches. I think it was the perfect place for the Osage Orange. I was actually fun trying to get all the pieces out of it.
Had me a little worried because had I messed up one segment I was up that creek as they say. And I really did not want to go more than the two rows just because I wanted the illusion to really stand out.
I sure appreciate you sending me this piece as I know when you turned yours you really loved the wood.
I have all the details worked out for the video and it got even easier as I was doing it. When I show how to make the pattern I will reveal another thing that will make it like falling off a log. Maybe even a log of Osage Orange LOL.
      Take care,
      Gary

Now you've made me dizzy again, Gary! Not from the pattern but from the geometry and mostly from how you even conceive these beautiful masterpieces! Even if I had a pile of segments in front of me and a pattern to go by, I wouldn't be able to assemble them. You are the segment master for sure AND have the gift of being able to explain what you are doing! 50 years from now when we are gone there is going to be a whole new group of segment turners, thanks to you! Great job, professor! 😊

Be careful I may send you a box of segments to play with and see what happens LOL.
I just love doing any kind of wood turning and hoping this will caring on. Just like you do and as a matter or fact in a few weeks you will see something that people will say it has Phil written all over it and it does.
Thank you my friend and till the next time...see ya later,

Osage Orange, Bois d'arc, Maclura pomifera is one of my favorite woods. Yes, I have many favorite woods. Haha. It grows well here in Central Texas. Many beautiful things can be made with it. I have made beads and pendants out of it. It polishes like stone. It also eats chainsaw chains. Haha The thorns on the tree will remove parts of your body quite easily. The fruit looks like a softball sized green brain and can be thrown, but then your hands will be very sticky. Old ranchers here used to keep a Bois d'arc stick in their trucks for when they work working cattle and needed a prod. Some ranchers lined their fence rows with the trees to encourage the cattle to stay on the property. I think your project is awesome.

Thanks so much Glen. So there will be no geometry to speak of. (It will be there but you will not know it or need to) but a calculator might be called upon and a pencil to write down some dimensions.
The rest will be up to you to set you sled or fixture up to make the cuts. Easy money!
I am getting real excited about doing this and I have a few weeks where I can work on it. I just want to make it real easy to understand. I know I have issues understanding where others may not(too many years of working to close tolerances)
But I will get it worked out soon.

That is fantastic! Your quick removal of the 12 segment template helped me understand how you positioned your segment cutting jig angles. That makes much more sense then setting the front and back faces separately. Oh, at first I thought you were going full 3D and make one of your “bowl from a board”. Maybe it will be your next one!

It's a great shame that most schools (in the UK) no longer teach geometric construction but rely on the computer 'geometry' more than ever. But I've had several occasions over the last twenty years where students studying Design Technology have struggled with certain designs because they did not have access to the correct computer software - in some cases resulting in guessing the design. An example was my son wanting to construct a 'cam with instaneous fall' His teacher had not a clue how to set it out - all that the majority of teachers can achieve on cam design is an ellipse. I showed my son on when designing cams the importance of a displacement diagram. His teacher invited me to the school to show a class how this achieved. Over the next few weeks I instructed - how to divide a line into equal lengths without calculation - polygons - true lengths of 3D angled lines, etc.
So it may be an idea for you to demonstrate simple geometric techniques - resulting in a practical application. As a fellow pattermaker I'm certain this would be of interest to many.
The visible striking piece you have produced here is a credit to you. I look forward to your next creation!

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  10 місяців тому

Thank you Anthony. I think they area skipping a lot of the basics in math anymore. I remember showing apprentices how to subtract a number that had a higher fraction than the number they were subtracting from without a calculator and in your head. Along with other math tricks I hardly use anymore. Similar to figuring out how long ago it was for something in the 1900's to our current year. Basic math but a lot struggle with it today because of computers and calculators.
I think the things that excite us in math bore others.
I will show how to draw this shape and then break it down to even easier way to get it done. But a drawing is good to help see where you are going. A little road map.

The best thing I've learned from you is using hot glue to place a temporary tendon on my vessels and removing the tendon with denatured alcohol. I've almost used 100 glue sticks in my glue gun. Great work as always ! I would love to see how to lay this out with a compass and might even try my hand at it. Thanks for all your great ideas and great work !

Very nice, Gary. Down here in East Texas, we have quite a lot of Osage Orange (a.k.a. Bodark or Bois D' Arc). Some of my wood turner friends here don't like turning it when dry since it becomes very hard. Personally, I have turned it once or twice and did not find it too difficult to turn. The wood does make nice bowls with great chatoyance in the grain. I think your turning proves that point!! Yeah, I'd like to see the video you mentioned making the design without using math and a compass just to see how you do it. Thanks for sharing!!!

Thanks John. It is a dense wood that seems a little hard but I find it turns fine. Easier than Black Locust that is fully dry or Camellia.
Working on the simple method. Actually been working on it before I even started this one.
      Thanks for watching,
