    WHAT A DELIGHT! How you can get 140 individual components that you have made up is infinite care in the extreme. I have NO idea what drives you to this level, it HAS to stem from your previous job. Whatever it is you are a 'Master of Your Craft'. If I ramble on, please forgive me because you take my breath away with your 'work'. Fantastic finish completes the Master Class that you did not intend to set up in the first place.

      Thank you Donald. Well to help you understand I was a Journeyman Wood Pattern Maker for a living.
      Everything I made had to be very precise as far as dimensions go. They were made from 2D drawings and ended up as 3D parts that were used in foundries to make metal castings. You can look up some of my very early videos to see some of what I made. Probably a wood workers dream job. As it was for me!

    A bunch of years ago I learned how well that spray lacquer works out. I built and finished a Thompson-Center Hawken Rifle kit. I used the spray lacquer on the stock on multiple coats, wet/dry sandpaper to 800 grit, and the stock had a finish like glass. Like your barrel of blocks, you could turn the stock and as the light hit different parts of the grain, it would flash a glow. Your barrel is ten times that and absolutely knocks your eye out. Really wonderful work.

    After all that work and the beautiful barrel of a bowl I felt sad to see you spray that lacquer on, but after watching with curiosity to see the end result, after sanding and polishing, WOW, now that's the way its done. I think so many turners just finish with lacquer because it takes so much to get a silky smooth glossy finish, sanding and such, especially if your creating a hibrid resin/wood piece. You can see the orange peel and scratches still, but not this one, #SUPERAMAZING Im glad I found your channel

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому

      Thank you very much for those kind words. Lacquer can be an issue with the orange peel for sure. As with any finish it is only as good as what you spray it on. Sanding the wood is the most important part of the finishing process. I sand in between each coat of lacquer as well. I probably use shellac more than lacquer but this job begged for a lacquer finish.
      Thank you for watching and your very kind comments.

    Hi Papa: Through the past years I have watched lots of you tube video on how to. But I must say yours I truly enjoy,and it is also very inspiring to build bowls like yours. I think I am ready to build a barrel bowl. But I need a little help. What is the size of the diamonds I see in this video. I also don’t know how to measure or make the oak around the diamond. Could you show me or tell how to cut the oak. And the size of the oak. I also like how you turn the inside of the bowl/ barrel before adding on more rings. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Sometimes many of us can do good projects, but we can use some good professional help. I appreciate all your help. From the bottom of my heart thank you ever so much.

      Thank you Ron. Padauk goes nice with almost any other lighter wood.
      I still have thoughts of making a lid for this. Ice bucket might need a liner.

    Hi Gary,
    This is a true work of art and I think your pattern maker days are showing in this piece!
    I've been into segmented turnings and wish I had 1/10th of your wood working knowledge,,,,you make it all look so easy and it really isn't!
    The finish is amazing as well!
    Thanks for this and all of your videos!

      I was never a man who did much planning on a project and wanted them completed in a day!
      Segmented turning was a real challenge for me I'm many ways and it has taught me a lot in ways I never thought I could imagine!
      Funny how all my life I was in a hurry to do everything but after retiring I finally slowed down!

    That does it, Gary. I declare you "UA-cam's Master Segmented Turner!" All of your segmented work is great but this one, maybe because of the barrel shape, is my favorite. Beautiful and useful. And the finish! You knocked it out of the park! And yeah, I kept trying to get a peek at the inside and you just weren't letting me! LOL! Nice surprise, inside and bottom. Really great job, Gary! Keep'em coming, my friend, and stay safe and healthy.
    Phil

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you Phil and I actually had video showing the inside and clipped it out. The barrel shape sort of developed on its own. But you know how that works. We think we know what we want and then when something shows up it is time to stop.
      I just came in from working on another glue up that is a nightmare of joints!
      Not to worry I have 3 beautiful bowls that are from logs. But they are scheduled 2 weeks out.
      I am doing a sort of a challenge next Friday that will be fitting for what we are all going through right now.
      Speaking of which I know it was bad up in your area so be safe and healthy as well.

    Beautiful work! I'm down here in southeast Texas, we don't have to many choices of wood, so when I got into turning it made sense to use dried wood and segment it all together! I think the few plates and bowls were a success, but there are always new challenges out there, this one here just might be my next project! I love the way it turned out....get it? Lol
    After two storms, rebuilding my mother's house twice from flooding, and my girlfriend's house, rebuilding my shop that had two feet of water, rebuilding a baby room for out 8 month old, building stair rails and spindles to keep baby safe, I think it's time for me to get back on the lathe for me! Turning the spindles were a heck of a lot harder than I thought, it became work and no pleasure! Time for some bowl turning for pleasure! I'm not getting any younger starting over at 59 I need a little shop time! Look forward to watching the rest of your videos!
    You surprised us with the bottom! I absolutely love that!
