- With heavy snow in the forecast, @BruceCookfmx, @DennyOfTheAlpine and myself head into the mountains with my tracked Jeep Gladiator, and a Wrangler on 40s. I have major problems with my tracks, and get stuck in a frozen mudhole. Now we're in a survival and recovery situation in the worst possible conditions.

Hey friends! I hope you enjoy this adventure. I've set a personal goal for this channel to reach 1,000,000 subscribers by the end of 2025. Why 1 million? All the goals I've set so far for this channel we've blown right past with ease. Just like when I'm out on my adventures, I want to challenge myself. I want to make THE BEST off-road content on UA-cam. If I can hit this goal, I'll know I'm really doing it. If you feel like I am, hit the like on this video and smash the subscribe button to help me on my road to a million! I love you guys.
You're gonna get 2 million by 2025.
1,000,000 man TSTN Army. Sounds intimidating! lol
Good work, love watching your show!
Hey Sean been subscribed for a couple years. You are why i bought a Wrangler. Ordered one brand new 2 years ago. Now it's on 38s, PSC hydro, metalcloak 3.5 lift. Rubicon axle swap, on board air, on board gmrs, running out of things besides coilovers and big axles. I tell everyone i know that wheels to subscribe keep up your hard work. Love all of your videos.
Semoga terkabulkan apa yg Anda kehendaki. Semangat terus & semoga sehat selalu.🙏
What an EPIC Episode, and what an Ordeal you Guys had !!! !!!!! And 1,000,000 WILL Happen !!!!! You DO make THE BEST content Shaun, Keep on doing what you're doing...FUCKING LOVE IT..🤘🤘
Your story, your editing, your videos are spot on. Nobody does it like you! Keep up the good work Shaun. It’s paying off.
Thank you!
Great video.
The drive wheel shouldnt be Skipping on the chain of the track's.
They were from the time you left the trailer.
Driving home safely is the Prize.
Always be Safe Brother's
Looks like as the new you use the tracks you'll know what to have with you. Appears to me a high lift jack and maybe a spare tire or preferably 2 would get you out of a pickle to flat ground ( no hidden mud/icehole) and you could keep trucking. Good video on overcoming unusual circumstances!
All you need for this kind of fun, is super swampers 44, on portal axels, lockers and that's all. Of course an hemi engine, but you already got one. If you would have went there alone and get you tracks broken and have 2 meters of snow in one night, you would have been in serious trouble!!
Stay safe!
Great video as always, Shaun!!
Not that I was ever going to drop north of $10k on tracks, but this pretty much sealed for me that they would be a disadvantage for the type of wheeling I like. Appreciate it!!
Love that you continue to show the beautiful, the broken, and the downright shitty of going out on the trails.
Also, be sure to give the drone assistant a good Christmas bonus this year for another strong performance!
That is so cool. Both of those rigs cutting fresh snow looks like an amazing day!
So glad you got out of that mess! I broke through ice on the trail like that once in - 23 and ended up having to walk out for help after breaking all my recovery gear.
What trax are you using? Helltraxx??
Sadly this seems to happen often with tracks! They work really well until you're in a situation where they fail and it goes sideways really quickly. Glad you made it out!
glad you got out. I didn't think of using matrix as a jack base- thanks for giving me ideas. I already have a 8x7" steel base attached to a bottle jack. the boards will provide extra float on snow.
well, you found the limitations of the tracks that's for sure! Now to make a field repair manual
This is the single greatest episode of TSTN of all time. No contest. Well done Shaun - love it! Keep on killing it. You’ll hit 1M subs for sure!
Thanks buddy! I appreciate it.
The tracks seem to be more of a hindrance than an improvement.
Shaun, wonderful episode........it makes me happy I retired almost two years ago! For many years (27) I worked as a mechanic at a major Colorado ski resort and I really can't count the times I was re-tracking vehicles in the middle of a cold snowy night often on ski slopes in excess of 35 degrees. Most of the time it was on either a Pisten Bully or Bombardier (Prinoth) snow cat with tracks weighing 100's of kilos. We also ran side by sides with track systems very similar to what you're running on the Trail Destroyer. When you posted the episode about tracking up the Trail Destroyer, I held a strong premonition of what possibly might happen as it did in this episode. Tracked vehicles over the snow are amazing.......UNTIL THEY'RE NOT, as you now well know. Hope you will get to run them in some springtime snow conditions where they can be even more amazing. I'm happy I live 2 hours from Moab for winter wheeling with little snow. You've brought back many good and not so good memories, LMAO and enjoying my TSTN hoodie.....it's nice, Thanks!
I'm kind of thinking its the high RPM's. That track compound material heats up even when its tight and stretches.
I definitely bein there!!! As well as changing a transmission in the middle of the bush in -30s cuz when your doing seismic you are the repair crew 😂 definitely remember some late nights wrenching
It appears that the tracks are not as trusty as regular old wheels. They seem fun for sure, but the other jeep is exactly where your Jeep made it. Thanks for showing us that they are more of "for fun".
Good Promenade in the snow!!!!
What a winter wheeling beast! love how your Gladiator has evolved since you got it!
kudos to the group for having the right tools and enough bodies to deal with this situation. It'll be quite a story to tell over a few beers later for sure.
Some of the best offroad content ever. Amazing video. Amazing audio. Thank you!
Great video! And I love the intro with the Jeep rolling by on tracks and up pops one of your sponsors..... Toyo Tires😂. Maybe you can get Chevrolet to sign on!
We run Toyo Tires most of the year.
@@TheStoryTillNow Oh I realize that, I just thought it was ironic. Like filming a Wendy's commercial while eating a Big Mac!
I'll tell ya what, I'm gonna subscribe right now because of that!
Awesome video! It sucks when things like that happen. The knowledge and experience are priceless. Thank you for sharing!
Have a safe & happy holiday season Shawn & family...And Subs! All the best in 24!
To you and yours as well!
My son introduced me to your amazing videos, and I couldn't be happier! It's a blast to watch you go on adventures that I can only dream of! Great work! I'll share this video in hopes of boosting subscribers.
Thank you!
I told ya you needed bigger tires last winter, not tracks! lol Nice Job Shaun, must have sucked having to deal with this sort of repair out in the elements but you folks brought it back to the trailer in relatively one piece!
Another awesome video those night video parts were amazing
I just came across this channel today and immediately subscribed. Awesome channel!! Love the videos!
Thank you!
Awesome cinematography! Seems like the tracks definitely have a limit. Glad to see you made it out! 👍👍👍
Thanks mate for such an amazing content! I'm not a off-road guy but I and my wife just stuck here xD can't stop to watch so good content and as a videographer I can say - quality is really good! keep it on 💪
And yeap on "tracks" you need to be soooo careful....I had experience to drive Rubicon on tracks in russia and daaaaaym, amazing feeling and opportunities! Is your engine heating fast too? because as I remember that was a kind of problem first time
Watching the JT make it's way through the snow in that terrain is surreal and mesmerizing. The perceived lack of depth perception that you mentioned early in this one is super tough in the snow. I think the only other thing I've seen come close is cruising through the sand dunes at night with wind making the surfaces in front us hard to see. At least it's not bright white though 😅
Yeah it really gets tricky. Everything just looks the same and you can't tell how steep things are. Makes it fun haha.
As always love the episodes!!! Coming from a heavy equipment background, keep a propane torch head in the rig, will help a ton to melt the ice out of those tracks if you ever need to make a repair and get the adjusters moving. Can hook it right to your 3lb or 5 on propane tank. Keep up the amazing videos. Always look forward to mondays!!!
Yeah I forgot my torch at home and I sure was regretting it.
Crazy adventure, team work got you out safely, looking forward to seeing your next adventure
It would be cool if you drove the Gladiator to the trail head hauling a trailer with your tracks and then quickly swapped and drove in on the tracks...then vice versa.
A local fab company around here has been experimenting with Portals. They specialize mainly in Toyotas. Tracks for snow and also for lift/ground clearance. Really cool stuff! Interesting to watch you using this new tech. I grew up on a farm as a kid and we had/have these small Caterpillar crawlers. D2/D4 orchard models. Steel tracks/pads.
I watched a vid last spring and they were testing those tracked Yotas on the Rubicon trail. One of the deepest snowfalls in the Sierra's last winter in a century.
Im glad people like you exist to show us these vids and on what to never do with your 100k vehicle. Good content though. Ill keep my wildtrak clean 😆
That would be the first and last trip for tracks for me.
There’s a learning curve with anything new. This is unlikely to happen again, knowing what we know now. Learning is part of the fun.
Casey de lavelle made modifications to his tracks to stop this situation eg. replaced plastic cogs with metal ones with longer teeth. Hopefully that helps✌️
I’ve been talking with him 👍🏻
Shawn, get yourself a set of real wide tires with good paddles and get rid of the tracks. No stress that way.
I'm having a blast, no stress here.
subscribed! This channel is epic! Looking to get into this hobby soon! Huge inspiration getting into this next adventure! Cant wait for more content! Keep crushing it
Every time I've seen someone use tracks they fall off !!! challenging to carry a spare!😂
Incredible video! That was some serious snow!! Love your videos Shaun. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
I think I've hardly ever seen a video where anybody uses these tracks for vehicles, and they don't fail somehow.
Recent subscriber here. Great videos guys. Enjoy watching them, keep it up!
Thank you!
Great stuff always !!!
You was dead right about your crew great bunch of guys . Awesome channel new sub 🧨🍻
Thank you!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Those night shots flying between the trees was dope! Keep killing it and creating great content!
I say ditch the tracks. Looks absolutely bad ass and I’m sure it’s a ton of fun, but doesn’t seem consistent or reliable. Don’t get me wrong… I could watch you riding on those things all day. But I’d rather watch you riding instead of fixing shit. :-) I bet it’s more fun for you too. Keep them coming… Always look forward to Monday stories! Cheers!
Happy New Year
wow very interesting experience friend
Can’t wait to see if you guys survive!
Says the devil on his left shoulder!!!! lol!!!
Music is so good👍
How come you guys couldn't loosen the tension on the track too help walk it back on? When I ran bombies and wet snow would pack inside the bogies till it would walk the track off that was the go too plan. Knock out all the ice and loosen the track, walk back on then retighten. How hard is it setting the tension on these things pretty tricky? Great video man great to see actually really wheeling on tracks to see what those limitations are.
Those front/rear lower carriage wheels look too small. The wheels that ultimately guide the track back up to the drive sprocket. Especially the leading wheel. It takes the brunt of the Torque when you are turning.
Bought an Rc one winter with tracks. Learned my lesson about tracks then. Lol
Sorry boys. I say stay with the mud terrain tires or the snow terrain.
As cool as those tracks are, I don't think they would be on my truck come the morning lol. You guys persevered though, and made it
10 minutes so looking forward to seeing the next video 📹
Just as I wrote in the comments to one of your previous video when you just had them installed - only flat ground! I have tried these things on side-by-side utv back in 2010s and with the same result- first rut or ditch or log lying across you way - disaster. And on utv it seems it was even a bit smarter system - it had special leverage mounted to lower control arm preventing tracks spinning freely as a wheel.
More than 10 years past since than but nothing changed , I guess this system will not evolve ever in to anything decent.
Besides that you need to have powerful engine to run them , and your driveline should be ready to take such abuse of course. And you still get stuck easily in really deep snow. Very low mobility in tight spaces as well.
This truck of yours is a monster. I was wondering, since I have never driven a truck with tracks, do you drive in 4 wheel drive with the lockers on, or is it that just situational? Just like with tires. Thank you for your content, I enjoy it greatly.
Thanks! Same as tires. But I drive in 4 hi all the time mostly. Lockers as needed.
Cool video! There are limitations to tracks for sure.
BTW I didn't know you delivered pianos??
👌😆
Neither did I 😂
Ask anyone from the Armed forces and they can tell you what a high maintenance pain in the butt tracks are. You had enough hands, a wheeled vehicle and the patience, never losing your cool to pull it off and make the trip a success. Hopefully the manufacturer will also learn from your experience and make some improvements to the design.
Tracks are so overhyped. More problems than not.
If you aren't getting stuck the snow isn't deep enough yet! Great video Shaun!
😂 better yet, if you’re getting stuck with tracks, you’re going to be screwed lol
New winter name for the rig “Trail Breaker.”
The tough part is the snow blindness .... Everything blends together and you can tell bumps and ditches to flat ground. It all looks smooth.
So are the tracks worth it? Do they perform that much better compared to if you had tire chains on the other jeep. Just curious. Maybe a video comparing that would be interesting. Great video!! First time watching your channel.
Do those drive wheels In the tracks NOT have cogs?? That should help prevent spin (obviously) but also prevent lateral movement.
Any GOOD snow track made today has those plastic (I don't remember the name of the material) cogs...
They improve function and reliability a TON.
I couldn't figure out why your tracks were popping in the beginning of the video. THIS IS WHY.
None of them that I’ve seen have this. they were “popping” because the tension was loose. It’s all standard snomobile parts.
@@TheStoryTillNow I'm betting the company offers it as a upgrade.
Gotta look into the cogs. It will make HUGE difference
Tracks look cool. But way too finicky.
Salut ... Pour le prix que ça doit couter ces chenilles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pas vraiment top sorti du plat ou chemin non accidenté en montée ou descente ..
Et il faut une remorque donc un autre 4x4 ...... très décevant non ? Sportivement@+Chrys
This seem to be a very common experience with tracked rigs.
You really should compare OnX to GAIA and I think you’d stop recommending that bad software. Also, you’d have an easier time staying on the trail because GAIA maps are high definition 😉
Wow Shaun! For every episode this channels just gets better and better! That "battle" part felt like it was out of a movie! Happy that you have help with a camera man! Keep up the good work!
sheesh.. I guess tracks dont make one immute to the snow and trail conditions. Looks like I got my work cut out when I test out my own set.
They just require a bit more attention and a little bit different style of driving. All of what has happened was avoidable. I just tend to push the limits.
@@TheStoryTillNow having 700+HP may or may not be a factor. I’m no expert but just a random thought. 😂
@@TheStoryTillNowyou did a great job though dude!
The only problem with owning a dragon is that sooner or later it will try to eat you.
Not a "car" guy so excuse the stupid question. But what if a 1 track per side, like a tank. Would that be better? Would look cool as hell
You wouldn’t be able to turn because unlike tanks you can’t rotate both sides in different directions.
@@TheStoryTillNow OK thanks in hindsight that makes perfect sense.
Hey Shaun, I started watching your videos last winter when you were snow wheeling and thought you should try a set of Mattracks. I have some on a 2000 Dodge Dakota in Oregon. They are amazing and have a torsion bar to keep the tracks from rotating. Also very heavy duty. We run them all winter hunting bob cats. Keep up the great videos.
how much for a ride along? (extremely serious question) 22 gladiator 40", 22 Rubicon 392 40", 11 Rubicon jk 37"
What done is used for your vids? This is beautiful!!
We flip rear tracks way more than the front and ended up putting limiting chains on the rear with ver little slack. Also with lockers they are less likely to independently flip. We are always down to meet up and take the tracked rigs out in idaho
this is why id never run traks on a vehicle. id rather run them on a UTV rather a 6k lb vehicle. glad you made it out. but for sure get them wheels/tires back on.
Was contemplating getting some of those tracks but all the issues you’re having with them, hard pass!
There’s no “issues” with tracks. He made a couple of mistakes and you learn from that. No big deal.
I’ve had mine for a while, and zero issues. Remember, he doesn’t have any limiter straps, which would prevent what happened, from happening.
One thing about Shawn is he’s pretty straightforward guy and showed this video for his experience and for learning as well. Props for him to post it.
Great video, Shawn!
There is a big reason no one has tracks on heavy vehicles. They are awful. Expensive and always broken. Ostacruiser figured this out years ago.
It's really tough to know how tight to get those tracks without starting to burn out bearings, but if the track is slipping on the main drive "sprocket", they aren't tight enough. Good job getting it out and what a great group of guys!
Nope, if they are tight enough that they don’t slip with a rig that powerful, they are WAY too tight and will constantly be going through bogie bearings
@@CaseyLaDelle with him barely touching the gas climbing that hill, they certainly looked too loose.
@@BlownF1501I’d agree on that too. Mine are much tighter.
@@CaseyLaDelleWas there an add on sprocket that you ended up using??
@@Justjeepingadventures I totally get that they were worse after Shawn's trail side repair, Looks like they had to back them right off to pop them back on. Maybe they were good before that. I'm not familiar with that particular brand, but I think you, Casey and Shawn are all running them. My friend designed and makes a very similar style system and offers external drivers if ratcheting is still an issue when tensioned properly (usually deep snow or high HP applications). Hopefully the Manufacturer of yours offers a deflection spec or something of the like to set the tension. Extra internal or external drivers are always good IMO too. All tracks stretch initially and it's good to have some targeted tools on hand to make life easier and check them regularly. After rotating a track on a truck in a beaver rut, I always recommend carrying tools and having a good anti-rotation set up.
Starting to think hard plastic/rubber wheels are a bad call for tracks on the heavy rig. Maybe a set of small trailer tires inside of a track would be a better/more robust design.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of setup and rig would you need to make it thru this terrain effortlessly?
That track system needs some serious re-engineering.
Love that you put it all out there without worrying too much about the consequences. Its fun to see what your Gladiator is capable of. You've got some good friends hangin' with you too. Good luck hitting 1 mil!
I'll stick with 40" tires...lol
Hey, Your content is awesome. I just came across your channel today and binge watched most of your videos. Keep up the great work. I subscribed, you will hit your target no prob.
Thanks!
Dude you got some solid friends
Looks like a set of 42” Iroks on beadlocks would have been better.
All these videos have done is re-enforce that tracks should just never be used for any recreational activities.
Tracks are not for high speed and those tracks are to small thats why they flipped.
What size tires are on the Jeep in this video? Look like 40’s… no wonder it can float through the snow… great video as always Shawn!!!!
40x13.5R17 Nitto Trail Grapplers at 3PSI
I agree with the comments below that this channel is getting better every time. I love your channel.
I hope you hit a million in 2024!!!!
If I could give you any advice as a viewer, I enjoy the why did I put tracks on my Jeep. How do they work.
At one point it seemed that the rear passenger was skipping.. Was that because of incorrect tension on the tracks? Is the tension automatic like a fan belt, or manually adjustable?
I guess what I am to say is: We want to see the preparation, the journey, and then the adjustments to what went wrong.
Good luck on hitting 1 Million!!!!!
They're still breaking in so they require re-tentioning and I waited too long to do so. It's a learning process. Once they are dialed in I don't expect to have many issues. But we will see. It's all fun to me.
When you get stuck are the lockers engaged but tracks are just slipping? Seemed like often only one track per side were driving. Seems obvious but just wanted to ask.
Lockers were not engaged when that was happening. Basically the method of operation is same as tires, you engage lockers when you need them.
The tracks just sound and look loose.... idk how no one caught that. Time to go back to your trustworthy wheels and tires that you can just ignore.
They stretch and loosen over time, I'm still breaking them in and they needed an adjustment. Totally normal. I was a bit lazy about getting out in the snow and tightening them up, and paid the price.
At one point when you were stuck, you were kicking up snow in front of your amber fogs and it looked like SPARKS flying! Love those ambers for driving in the snow at night!
Awesome video as always Shaun. Glad y'all made home ok when y'all were working on the tracks with the Jeep jacked up it was a sketchy situation. But y'all made it out safe that's the only thing that matters.
We learned a lot and the next trip was a lot more successful! That video is coming soon.
