Good to see you both got your rigs out safely! I'd say it was definitely a wise choice to turn around when you did given the snow depth and the challenges with Pauls rig. Was up there a few days later and once you get past the cabin into the open alpine it gets even more stressful and sketchy to navigate things safely. Especially in such a wet and heavy snow pack. It's an exponential increase in learning curve that can be stressful but definitely glad you aren't going to give up! As always, incredible footage and story telling Shaun! 1M or bust.

When you run tracks do you have your lockers engaged all the time or does it just depend on the trail conditions? When do or don't you use them?
I mean this as a compliment. You get stuck better than most overlanders. You don't seem to have any fear of getting stuck but you aren't just recklessly "sending it". I have learned a lot watching your recoveries.

I’m not sure how significant the cost behind it would be but next winter you should consider doing an winter/ice road trip…there’s tons of cool little reserves and communities in the northern ends of the provinces and territories that are strung together by miles of winter roads that would make for an epic video series. I travel between them for work and it’s unlike anything you’ll ever experience.

People always comment about how they run over everything on different tracks. If you ran over rocks with a snowmobile, you’re bound to have something go wrong. He’s already said that in his video. I’ve been out many many times on my tracks and as long as you stay in the snow, they were perfectly fine. Our trails are very tight and when you fold a track, it puts pressure on the buggy wheel.

I really want tracks for my Jeep, but I would really like to design my own. I have tracks for my CanAm 800 outlander max and they are a blast. One thing I have learned is that the tracks need an upswept design to help you climb on top of the snow instead of diving through it. On my camoplast tracks the front boggie wheels are about 8 inches up to the center of the wheel from the bottom of the track, this really helps get on top of the snow. The rears of my tracks are flat sort of how yours look and they tend to dig in and make backing up a chore. The main snow I really have trouble in is super dry sugar snow, it is easy to get stuck in that. We haven't had enough snow in the big horn mountains of wyoming this year for me to even install my atv tracks, hopefully later this week I will take the Jeep out and see how well I can get around on tires in anticipation of elk shed hunting.

Have you thought about making the Jeep fit some 49s or something for winter mode and really get some floatation. You’d be able to use some horsepower in situations when you burry a track. And also be able to rock back and forth among other things… also all the weight you are rolling with probably doesn’t help much either.

  • @nikolanikolov4287

I came down to some question of how snow depth can be measured in front of the truck, and prevent getting stuck.
After are few minutes of small "research" via Google, I found two possible options. First method is laser based remote sensors, and second method relies on satellites.
The first method is quick. It is basically a laser which scans area of 15 meters in front of the truck and gives you the snow depth, before you put wheels on in. The laser is not small, and I am not sure about the $, but I can dig into it out of curiosity.
The second method via satellites is slow, but it can give you initial information of the snowe depth along the trail. The method is slow, because the satellite must scan the same area within few hours again. It is like a snapshot of satellite data every few hours.
The laser method looks promising, but the laser itself seems bulky and it will require a separate power station. If that technology gets better, and the laser becomes smaller, it can be attached near the KC bar.

What brand of tracks are they because they look like they are kinda cheap and not worth the money they pop and skip so much.

      @Justjeepingadventures 6 місяців тому

You run tracks? Have to ask because I do. Slipping isn’t any indication whether they are cheap or not.
It’s called ratcheting and sometimes it happens. Track may be a tad loose. It also happens on sleds.

You run wider tracks? If so, they won’t work in these trails we have.

Dude, the triangle shape of the track is completely wrong, it just tries to bury itself. A trapezoidal shape upside down would work better, but to be honest, just buy a bloody ripsaw and throw a roof top tent on it.

@@TheStoryTillNow I'm not talking about problems you had on the trip. I'm talking about all the up keep in parts constantly being replaced. I'm just not sure it's worth the swap for tracks with the limitations of terrain. But they are cool 😎 if I could afford a jeep just for tracks I'm not saying I wouldn't. 😂 Love the channel the quality of video is top shelf.

I still stand by, trax on vehicles suck unless you are on a ski slope or on a purpose built snowcat. No point in spending all the money if they are so delicate to conditions and terrain. The products just are not there yet.

I agree. You need way more flotation. Snowmobiles are only 4-600lbs and are always climbing upwards. The bad front angle on tracks makes it impossible to climb upwards.

I’m going to disagree. I run snow tracks on my Jeep too and am local to him. I’ve been up 19° incline with my tracks, deep snow and they are super capable. Shawn is still learning his set up and is getting it dialed.
