He even refused to accept the fare as I had given him a tip the last time. Enjoy the ride, it won't be dull!
India is like no other country on earth. I travelled there first in 1996, a forty six year old white American woman alone, with a backpack and Lonely Planet guide. I ranged from Mussoorie on the border of Tibet down to Kerala down south, although I centered a chunk of my travels all over Rajasthan. I wanted to experience the India that everyday Indians did, so stayed at the same rooming houses and little local hotels that they did, where sometimes I had to request a bucket of hot water for the cold water only shared showers. The poverty, dirt, trash and lack of Western sanitation methods was shocking, although I managed to never get sick. There was barely any internet, and often the power was down so the few who had it, mostly big businesses like major airline booking offices, couldn't access the rudimentary and slow dialup service, anyway. When I got back, people would ask "Did you have fun in India?" and I told them that India is a country that most travelers don't associate the word "fun" with as a description of their trip. It was wonderful anyway, people were kind and the local people I met were gracious and welcoming. It was eye opening about the reality of our world.

Marianne you are an excellent driver so if anyone can drive in India it’s you. We’ve been to India twice, like you, our first reaction was shock, but once you get into the swing of it, I’m sure you will love it. The colours are amazing and the people so welcoming and friendly. We joked that India will be lovely when it’s finished… as you venture onwards through India you will know what I mean. I’m really looking forward to your Indian adventure. Hygiene is not really their thing so I’d be careful about eating meat in particular, delicious though it might be at the time it can come back to bite you a few hours later! We all went vegetarian for our trips. But as I love spicy food like you Chris I did love the food.
And they make 'hand made' buses too! So safety isn't their thing either 😂 India is a fourth world country. Even Africa is more developed and cleaner than India now.
Traveled to India 3 times in the past. Never had a trip where I totally liked it or hated it. It was always somewhat OK, although I admit I was on business trips, not pleasure. I knew a bit about what I would be experiencing, so it was not a surprising. The best part was the delicious food. Indians do a Indian Food best, and it's a favorite for me.
We did the golden triangle some years ago, with a private driver ,roads absolute madness, on a dual carriageway, traffic coming towards us on our side of the road, driver said that was normal, another road had seven lanes of traffic going into one, lots of horn blowing, best of luck
Lots of horn blowing in Thailand? That's unusual. While Thais do blow their horns, contrary to the claims some expats make, horns are only used when necessary as Thais can run you off the road or point a knife or gun at you if you blast your horn too much. Seriously.
I've only spent a few weeks in India. I got bored so I bought a bicycle and cycled most days. People thought I was mad. I just followed the locals, go with the flow - if that meant going down the hard shoulder of a dual carriageway on the wrong side because it was easier than crossing, I would. I found that whilst it's busy, crazy, at the end of the day, no one is actually out to kill anyone on the road! Take your time, go with the flow.
Hi, I hope today is a good day wherever you are ! I'm so sorry about your bad experience in the first hotel, but so relieved the other one seemed to be perfect. I hope your stay there was in fact ok and that Trudy is fine with the upgrades ! Have a wonderful day !
You do need to go more upmarket regarding hotels when in India. We stayed in beautiful places that were much more reasonably priced than in North America and Europe.
Hi, yes arriving in India looked like a different planet from Malaysia 🤔 Hopefully everything will go according to plan for you and no damage to dear Trudy. Safe travels, you’re both awesome in my book ❤❤
I'm going to miss you guys being in SE Asia!!!! But I can't wait for you to show us around Kolkata! This adventure is the most exciting content on UA-cam I swear.
This brought back memories of my first trip to India in 1997. And like you, arrived in Kolkata or Calcutta back then, at night. Felt surreal looking at the streets during the drive from the airport. It was daunting at first. And hated the massive crowd and dust. But the city grew on me. Despite the poverty, people I met were the nicest and most memorable in all my travels. And I grew to love waking up to the sounds of the hustle and bustle of the city. Stayed at Sudder Street 😊
India is unique. Either you hate it, or you fall in love. I have been there 12 times, starting in 1996, spent almost 2 years there in different places. Extreme beauty and extreme ugliness exist side by side. It can be shocking and overwhelming in the beginning but possibly very rewarding in the end.
Loved India, stayed in a homestay in Kerela, hired a car in 2011 there were very few direction signs and no electronic maps, asking for directions interesting as pointed in both directions in an effort to please us! roads pretty manic.
@@TREADtheglobe you are in for a pure treat. I've done most of that road. Jaisalmer fort is a unique beauty you need to allow time to soak in. I spent 4 days and didn't tire of it, personally. I hope you're stopping in Agra and Jaipur at least. The road runs through the great Thar desert. This is no joke. It's a wilder area. Some roads if you travel near dark there are bandits who will 100% kill you not just rob you. Don't stop for someone. They take their role as bandits very seriously and won't be brought off or placated. In fact they find the attempt insulting according to my guide. If you are caught offer to join them is apparently the only chance you have. Then you hope for a police or military rescue. I think there is a movie about a woman who survived this by doing so. Not fiction, but hopefully the situation has changed for the better in 10 years. Sunroof? Close it if you don't want a big cat jumping in if you drive under trees. Plus the desert? If you break down it can be life-threatening. So those are major risks. The experience? My lifetime best. Carry a huge supply of bottled water and drink it. Double or triple the amount you think you need to carry. Have food on board. Make sure Trudi is tip top for sand. Sometimes it gets swept across the road. Roads can disappear entirely. If possible, again, a local guide is valuable. Mine took me to an amazing ruined temple in the jungle between Udaipur and Jaipur. Not signposted at all. Just phenomenal, like being on an impossible movie set in real life, and it was just us. Please do small legs as this allows you room to recover when things go wrong and to be in great shelter before late afternoon and after early morning. Plus, this is a time and place to smell the flowers and soak it in. It's very much once in a lifetime. Go for it! 😀 You could visit the Tiger reserve.

I am from India. My first comment, Kolkatta, was a wrong choice. You should have used Chennai as a port of entry and also to ship your van. Your experience would have been much different. I don't know how you plan to travel out. But Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujrat, and Rajasthan onwards towards the north would have taken you through a better experience, both driving as well as places to see. I presume you either plan to drive into Pakistan or ship your van once again to Iran or other countries in that region.
Hi - I think you are right !! Kolkata has been a baptism of fire indeed 🙏 But we are often only given certain choices when shipping and it is not always possible to go where you want - but where the logistics of shipping allow - This expedition has always been about driving around the world and getting from the UK to UK - but as you can imagine the world and routes have been very fluid since 2020 with permissions and borders etc. Kind regards Marianne
You guys continue to inspire … I think over the next week with a hotel base you will slowly slip into the Indian vibe …. Looking forward to your adventures there …
Can I just say to all those who are asking why India and Kolkatta…. Thank you for going to India- what did anyone expect to see? We all know that the difference from poverty to the rich is very wide. I look forward to more vids xx
I remember talking to an Indian lady and I said to her I was thinking of visiting India and she replied: 'what do you want to go there for!" I didn't visit India!
Your hotel at 2am was reminiscent of my arrival in Beijing. Was a huge hotel but the all the lights were off and reception staff were asleep behind the counter. I had to bang on the revolving door entry for 10 minutes to wake them up! India can make and break a traveller from experience. It is the land of extreme duality but you'll get used to it. Safe travels.
My daughter was in Kolkata in January. Her 3rd trip to India and 1st to the east coast. She adored Kolkata, but she knows India well. It was a cultural trip

Hi Your are so right about India, a place of contrasting lives and places. I've been many times volunteering with colleagues from the NHS. You are experienced traveller's so you know when your gut tells you something is wrong. A few tips, don't accept damaged bank notes and check for forgeries (200 rp) most common. The money is dirty, so sanitise your hands a lot! Driving at night is very dangerous, and forget the highway code! It's basically everyone for themselves. Any things goes. Avoid open shoes. The food is amazing, but be mindful of where you buy it from. Red tape is an Olympic sport in India. Enjoy the trip :) Can't wait for your updates. Have a great time. 👍

We really enjoyed this video and appreciate that you not only made the transition from one country to,another, but managed to film enough for us to feel almost as though we were there with you.
Thank you both 🌷
WHAT AN ADVENTURE!. Looking forward to the next video. Take care both of you.
i think this is one of the best view of india vlogs.. quite clear .. and fascinating
Looks like it's going to be a very interesting journey through India, goodluck guys!! Keep safe !! Enjoy !!
I don’t know how you do it but you’re brilliant. Would never have the patience nor the bravery to take on so many challenges. Love the vlogs.
Thank you !
Thank you - we have both become veggie on this trip too 😉🌺 and we have realised that Kolkata is a very special and unique place .....
"Hygiene is really not their thing". Really makes me want to book a ticket.
Welcome to India😊🎉
We always travel with 2 different debitcards and 1 creditcard. Sometimes when a card is not accepted by a atm the other card will.
You do need to go more upmarket regarding hotels when in India. We stayed in beautiful places that were much more reasonably priced than in North America and Europe.
The wildest part is that they just said no to clean sheets😮
They may not have owned spares or have in house washing
That probably was the cleanest bedding they provide as per the hotel standards😀
Hi, yes arriving in India looked like a different planet from Malaysia 🤔 Hopefully everything will go according to plan for you and no damage to dear Trudy. Safe travels, you’re both awesome in my book ❤❤
I'm going to miss you guys being in SE Asia!!!! But I can't wait for you to show us around Kolkata! This adventure is the most exciting content on UA-cam I swear.
Thanks - we are excited to share our drive from Kolkata to Jaisalmer to show the off the beaten roads and experiences
What do expect. I have been to India many times and absolutely love the people, culture and the country. It is a beautiful country
100% agree. Challenging but transformative. It is not for everyone, but can be the most amazing experience.
Loved India, stayed in a homestay in Kerela, hired a car in 2011 there were very few direction signs and no electronic maps, asking for directions interesting as pointed in both directions in an effort to please us! roads pretty manic.
Sounds lovely we are excited to see the real India - our route is Kolkata to Jaisalmer and beyond ... 🙌
Hats off to you two , it makes me nervous just watching your films.
Safe travels.
I've been watching your videos all day! Keep them coming! I must say, I'm quite jealous. I really miss India and Nepal. Hope to get back there soon.
They locked the hotel doors at night? Well that's a sign.....
Awesome video as always Chris and Marianne.Congratulations on landing in India 🇮🇳 can’t wait to see Trudy put her wheels on the ground in India. And can’t wait to see all the epic adventures all have in store. Thanks for letting us ride along with y’all on y’all’s journey around the world. 🌎

No difference, as a whole, India is dirty, unhygienic and poor infrastructure.
Where are you storing the wood portion? You have such little space
Anywhere in india is wrong choice. Sugarcoating reality. Trash in real.

Safe journey in India.. Hope you had a wonderful time in Malaysia. Thanks for visiting Malaysia. We will always welcome you.. 😅😊

@@erkanduruk- Not for them. I think the OP is warning the viewers.
I just come back from Sri Lanka, we face the same problem with bugs and termites on the bed. Request for different room it was just as the same one. We check out from that hotel into a better one.
Love, Love, Love all your amazing videos!!! May you both have a safe & pleasant stay in India. Safe travels as you take your beloved Trudy around the world. Sending loads of love your way❤️❤️❤️ Love you both.
What a start to your India adventure! Glad you found better accommodation 😅 If anyone can drive those crazy roads, Marianne can! ❤
Thanks! 😃
I simply loved India, hope you enjoy!

Thank you for this message - I did laugh out loud at the Olympic sport part !! 😉😂😂😂 Kind regards Marianne
Given all the instructions you have given, I don't think you are from this planet.. You are a human being, aren't you?
Please be careful in India. My friend had intestinal infection drinking tap water. He was hospitalized for 2 months.
Hospitalized for 2 months in your own country or India hospital?

Im a Malaysian, i studied medicine in Bangalore before... from my personal experience living in India for almost 5 years, even motorcycles can get stuck in traffic jamms... u will have a terrible time driving there, particularly in their cities... also... their police is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more corrupted (from my personal experience when i was a student there)... do be very extra careful there... record evidence if u are in a tight spot... good luck...
@@aegontargaryen6028 pffft... are you offended by the TRUTH...? It is in fact INDIA that is in need of foreign investment. If you are INDIAN, those are THE TRUE FACTS about your country, I studied MBBS in MS Ramaiah (MSU International Medical School) under my Government's sponsorship - and I am telling the TRUTH about what I have experienced in India.... Want more truths? India in general is very2 DIRTY, many of your people live in ABJECT POVERTY, drinking water is NOT safe to be consumed, power-cuts ALMOST EVERY DAY, eating Indian food will cause diarrhea/sickness especially for foreigners just arrived, FOOD HANDLING HYGIENE IS HORRIBLE, Govt officials - particularly the POLICE - are CORRUPT (IVE EXPERIENCED THIS FIRST HAND ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS), the TRAFFIC is HORRIBLE, the POLLUTION IS NASTY... Want me to say more? One good thing about all these is because disease is RAMPANT, it is a GOOD place to study MBBS, I get to learn about rare diseases that hardly ever affect Malaysian (the abject poor I mentioned before struggle to get good health care, hence rare and even treatable diseases are rampant).... Face the facts of your country... I'm giving a sound advice to other foreigners coming to India, you dont need to hide these facts from them.
My heavens!!!! the 1st hotel WAS a nightmare🥴 & my sympathies to your guys!!! Looking at the traffic, I foresee "M" driving skills will be tested to the limits!!!! Cant wait for next the adventure😍

I drove to Nepal, via India, from London in the 70s. Drove all over India. Wild camping, in tents, most of the way. I always say, if you only ever visit one country in your life, it should be India.
Robert Louis Stevenson would have spelt traveler as traveller!
Noooooooo. Almost every country in the world is more peaceful, more beautiful and less stressful than India. Maybe in the 70s it was ok.... but now it is quite literally a hellhole.
@@imcaufieldholtthere’s lots of hellholes in the world these days. 😢

Sorry for your bad hotel experience there, i had similar bad experience too during me last visit to India. My advise if you need to stay in a hotel in India, make sure it's at least 3 international stars hotel, I mean the hotel brands that are renowned around the world. Enjoy India :)
I lived for 4 years in Sri Lanka, absolutly loved it. I visited India for a week or so, never going back again.
Sri Lanka is different
We only visited Sri Lanka briefly, we thought it was a bit like India but cleaner.
U r feeble
Through my experience, driving in India will be very challenging & stressful indeed..they have their own standard driving attitude with plenty of noisy horn..😅
I’m remembering the India I saw in 1976. It hasn’t changed much! We traveled around India with our own sheet to handle the dirty sheet problem at hotels. It was a pain to wash them because most laundry were hand washing affairs.

Ha Ha - you are not wrong !!
With AC keep your barrier between cab and main part closed so less area to cool. We use a thick curtain, makes a huge difference. Stay cool!
Thanks for the tips! We have tried it and used it in the past but we are finding that as it gets hotter and Trudy is insulated for the UK weather the van holds the cool air in !! LOL - who knew
Wellcome to India.🙏👍👍🇮🇳🤗
What a fantastic brave couple ??? The BEST of British !!!
You should also fix your Horn in Malaysia besides the air conditioning 😂 Horning is polite in India, it means “excuse me, pls let me go”😊

Great tip - thanks I will look into that for future flights 😉🌷
Iam looking sooooo forward to your experiences in India
Count your blessing. India has come a long way from the days of the hippie trail i.e. driving from Kathmandu to London. Whatever you do, don't compare i.e. fire safety in the stairwell. India is a land of extremes. You will either love it or hate it. And don't take Trudi on the mountain pass to Srinigar.
I think it's pronounced "jallo-PEN-no" 😁😉
What a stark contrast between KL and Kolkata. 😱 It's one thing to know and understand the wealth disparity, another entirely to experience it.
Speaking of contrasts, your move from the 1st to 2nd hotels was a huge upgrade, obviously. Yikes!
Looking forward to seeing India through your eyes. All the best from Seattle. ❤️❤️😎👍xx
