I have changed the makeup of my bag considerably after watching your videos. I ditched the long iron "ego" clubs and put in the hybrids and a three wood. I have also practiced 180-220 yards shots quite a bit. My scores have come down. I may as well play the 14 clubs that give me the best chance of scoring and make the game as easy as possible. Thanks Mark.
@@vitamind2387 I think it really depends on the loft. I have a 17* high loft Taylormade 3-wood which is essentially a 4-wood. Its only 2-3 degrees stronger than a traditional 5-wood and I find I can play it from a number of lies. However, to each his own. As you've mentioned, not everyone can play a 3-wood and I'm sure there are other clubs that other players game that I couldn't play consistently either.
I've had a chipper in the bag for the last 2 weeks because of your video. I love it. Is it perfect, no but it will make you more consistent and that will make your scores lower
The smart sole chipper and sand wedge have been in my bag for two years now. I love them. The chipper even works great from 40-50 yards out and you can even carry some hazards with it. It’s stupid easy!
Just like you, I went from more "player" style irons to what is considered game improvement with the Cleveland XL Launcher irons that you reviewed. I love the feel of them and the ability to shot shape is there with the ease of play. I only get a limited time to play golf so why make it harder when these just work.
As a 10-12 handicapper I’ve used a chipper on and off for the last 15 years. I’ll use for full shots off of hard pan or rocks and such to save my wedges. Really versatile.
Best what’s in the bag videos. Love how it’s about what works, not what is shiney or what a certain type of player uses. Just experimenting with clubs for a specific reason. I’m gonna have to try a chipper.
I give you a lot of credit Mark. Most pros are too proud to use clubs that are designed to help like your chipper and your GI irons. Some are even too proud to use a hybrid.
Thanks Mark from Nashville for all the tips and research that you share from across the pond. Always good stuff !!! The blend of humor breaks the golf norm as well, great stuff....
The first thing that goes is my short game when I have taken time off, That chipper is stealthy enough that looks like a standard wedge. May have to give it a go.
Mark , i watched your video re the smart sole wedges and bought 2, the chipper and G wedges. Silver colour as don't think the dark finish is available yet here. Great in the winter with poor lies. But i think the chipper will stay in all year as a good safety club. Regards Mike
Yes!! The Crossy wedge is in the bag! Haha Can't wait to see what happens with that. US weather is improving here so us too will be out with our new '22 bag. (Crossy is front and center)
Recently purchased the Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft Premier 10.5C putter. I like center shaft and putt them very well. I switched from a Scotty Red X center shaft I had for years and it was beat to crap and after testing several, I decided the performance was great with the Cleveland! It wasn’t the deciding factor, but the cost combined with similar feel I found surprisingly similar, it was a no brainer!
Love the video, Mark. I’m 6 months into golf and was fitted in mid Jan and the typical clubs were put in my hand. However, I ignored the brand and went with feel and I’m now gaming Srixon ZX4 5-P, Cleveland Launcher Halo 3H, Srixon ZX 3W, Cleveland Turbo HB driver and Kirkland wedges. Plus, an awesome Srixon Tour bag. Man I love Srixon/Cleveland!!! :-)
I would definitely game a chipper, but would more likely go for the 56 degree sure sole you had in your previous video. My course has some elevated greens which I think would make the 56 sure sole more playable at my home course especially in the winter time.
Love the way you put the clubs in you want to and work for you! So many of us could learn from that and not be afraid to move away from “the norm and tradition” - just taken out my 4 iron and put in my 5iron from my previous set (same lofts) but it’s a bit chunkier and gives me a bit more confidence 🤞hoping it will give me the distance I want and will gap in between my proper 5 iron and 4 hybrid
The right tools for the job in hand. Absolutely on brand.👍 Big gap between pitching and gap? Put in another P. Want to try and make greenside chpping easier? Put in a chipper. Taking the ego out of it (not that I ever had much) has allowed me to stick to clubs that actually work for me, and not just carry around the shiny shiny.👍
I appreciate that you are gaming clubs that you enjoy and play well, not just changing your bag up with the newest versions. I always enjoy your videos Mark.
Have 13 clubs, 2 CBX wedges 48 and 54. More options at the other end with 5W 7W 4H and a 5-iron hybrid. I had one of those chippers a few years ago - and I always played it around the greens, maybe too much. I left it one day near a bunker - and never saw it again. I finished the round with my 48 wedge chipping and never went back. When I struggled chipping - the C Wedge chipper was a life-saver. (I could have used it yesterday!) It does look great in the black satin. My 54 wedge is black satin and I love that look.
Some of your bag ideas are similar to mine. I too have a 2nd P wedge due to my strong lofted TM M4 iron set - 43 and 48. I also just got that exact same Cleveland 52 degree to even out my gaps (replaced a redundant 50 degree). Now have 48-52-56-60. To get down to 14 clubs I don't carry a 3-wood. Always been bad off the deck with them and love hitting driver off the tee anyway.
Justin gets it. Driver off the tee even if I’m forcing myself to get comfortable with a club that can never really be tamed. I have a 42 degree set PW, and then a 46, 50, 54 (all CBX2) AND the Smart Sole 4 S (58). Really no room to try fitting in this chipper which I did try for about a month last year when I had a different setup. 3 Wood is the club I would move in and out of the bag as I have a 5W, 7W and 5H. All Cleveland Launcher XL. Don’t need to get rid of a 3W, just don’t always need it in the bag. Any replacement for the 3W would be something in the 27-29 degree range that makes me comfortable OR that darn chipper.😂 The black satin look is pretty cool. That’s also the color for my CBX2 wedges.
I've got the chipper in my bag and it saves shots, especially in the winter. Granted its not the most glamorous club, but when you roll it up to the hole from a wet, soggy, winter lie and you're watching your mate duff a lob wedge its just as satisfying. I suspect it might get replaced in the summer, but who knows, it might stay in for the old bump and run. Keep it to yourselves though, I don't want to lose the advantage!!
I’m at the point where I’m considering a new bag of clubs. You’ve certainly given me a lot to reconsider, I was thinking of a ‘standard’ set, driver, 3 & 5 wood, 6 to sand then wedges. Now I’m having a rethink! I don’t have a fast swing, so now looking down the hybrid and game improvement route. Thanks Mark, you’ve helped a lot there.
Huge thank you in helping me see thru all the marketing bs. I have been watching you for years and have finally submitted to a forgiving golf bag. I took the x stiff shafts out of my S55 and put them in my Ping Gs myself. 7-9,Uw. Pw a tour striker. 2 Glide 2.0 wedges 58, 54. Never could hit hybrids and found some old Taylormade Rescue mids with steel shafts has changed my long game tremendously 25, 19, 16. And my 21 is a Mizuno h4. Jpx 900 driver, 13 v steel steel shaft. Biomech putter
PXG Gen4 0811X driver- PXG 0211 3wood and 5 wood- Wilson D9 3 hybrid- Wilson D9 irons (5-AW)- Cleveland RTX zip core wedges 54/58 - Odyssey White Hot OG 7S putter 34". Love them all.
Mark, I have been considering a chipper since I saw last season's Cleveland smart chipper. I'm still on the fence, but believe I'll end up gaming one with my new bag set up. Truly appreciated the informational video and really enjoyed the last chipper video you released. Keep up the great work. Cheers
Well, practice makes us better. I am an okay chipping with my 7 iron or wedge at times, but with work and family. Leaves little time for practice. Sometimes we all need a little crutch.
My main hybrid is a Cleveland HiBore 4i (22 degree) and this doubles up as my go-to club for those tricky little shots just off the green, from bare, muddy and fluffy lies. Over the winter it's saved me at least 3-4 shots/round compared to my abysmal efforts using a wedge or iron to chip or bump and run. So I don't need to play different wedges and/or irons for different distances. I just use one Hybrid and change the length of backswing to cover different distances. It just makes things so much easier. But I love the idea of the more lofted chipper to get over even more longer areas of grass before the ball lands on the green, as the Hybrid still has limitations in that respect. Anything that makes certain golf shots easier, and lowers my score goes in the bag. Thanks Mark.
I often switch out my 4 hybrid and 7 wood, depending on the course I'm playing and the conditions I'm facing I also carry two 56 degree wedges in the bag, same loft but very different sole configurations.
Do you feel the pro , youtubers and product reviewers have the ability to have a better rounded golf bag to suit them as they have the ability and exposure to more clubs. You can take 3/5clubs out on the course and see what you like at brand new. However unless something is secondhand or 8-12months old very few pro shops support this. As for wedges other than a few indoor hits very few places let you try wedges out. (Hate the game not the player)
Thanks Mark, great insights. Gapping and overlaps are super important. At the moment, I am going with: TM M6 driver at 10.5 Ping G400 fairway at 16.5 Ping G400 hybrids at 19 and 22 Ben Hogan PTx irons from 25 to 45 degrees Ben Hogan Equalizers at 50 and 56 TM Spider putter Vice Pro ball Working pretty well, but might have to check out that Cleveland Halo XL hybrid.
@@GTF85 I’m not familiar with the newer Mizuno irons. The older forged models feel very soft, probably a bit softer than the Hogan irons. I had no issues with service ordering clubs from the Ben Hogan website.
I literally watched this to see what chipper you had! I’m tired of giving up 10 to 12 strokes a round because of chunky, demoralizing lofty wedge shots! I give in chipper it is!! Love your set up, love your content
I got some game improvement irons last year and did the same thing with my old pitching wedge - keep both in the bag and now have a good yardage gap between the 52 degree, the old PW and the new PW!
I’ve mixed up the bag a bit this year. I’m going driver, 4 wood (for off the deck, softer fadey flight) 2 iron (off the tee, low bullet, windy shot), 7W, 24 degree hybrid, 5-Pw, 52 & 58 wedge, putter. Relatively fast SS (115-120) but I love the extra height I can get from my longer clubs, plus I’ve got the option of knocking down my 2i, hybrid or 5i into the wind depending on distance.
My wedges needed an update, and I got rid of the 52 vokey for the 50 degree smart sole. Just made sense with the bare lies and lack of grass around the greens at my course. So I expect to see a few extra yards on full and 3/4 shots but that’s fine.
I have the same chipper in my bag. It's fantastic because it's short and controllable. I can use it up to 100 yards with great accuracy. It just won't spin back like my higher lofted wedges.
Thinking of going with 2 drivers.....ping g400 max for finding fairways, and some sort of low spinning weight forward bomber for long par 5s and wide open holes...
After 15-years or so, I've completely reconfigured my bag. Although it really hurt, I took out my well-loved Ping BeCu ISI irons and replaced them with Srixon ZX-4 irons (5-PW); replaced my 56* SW and 60* lob wedge with a Cleveland Smart Sole 4 58* sand wedge; replaced my gap wedge with a matching Cleveland Smart Sole 4 50* gap wedge; added a Cleveland Smart Sole 42* chipper; and replaced my Ping B60 putter with the Odyssey Eleven putter. There's really nothing in my bag from the previous season (including driver, woods and hybrids). Generally, I avoid changing clubs like the plague. But I'm convinced the new clubs are much more forgiving and have been instrumental in lowering my scores (and handicap).
The Crossfield Wedge makes the bag! 👍 My Smart Sole 4 wedge set (C, G, and S) just arrived the other day and I can not wait to get them out on the range. Will be replacing CBX 2 54 and 58 wedges and my set’s gap wedge.
Oh wow. Interesting. Enjoy. In hindsight my first set of irons last year needed to be just 6-PW and then all three Smart Sole 4 wedges. However, my CBX2 54 is probably my most important club not named driver or putter. I also have the 46 and 50. I do game the Smart Sole 4 S hoping I never need to use it. I’d say 90% usage is from the sand.
Just dropped my 5 iron and switched to hybrid, fairway woods!! Just don't have the swing speed to get much out of long irons - so good to see you having a similar set up! Loving a 7 wood! Who would have thought it! Great vid, thanks Mark
What is so endearing of Crossfield is this could easily be the WITB for an 18 handicapper. Never lets ego drive equipment decisions and this helped me to keep mine in check!
Agree with your last comment around egos and what’s in the bag. Exactly the point of golf is to get the ball in the hole in as little shots as possible. The card doesn’t ask how you get there. Taken me a while to accept this especially when you play with bigger hitters. Been experimenting with different clubs also and have gone back to a couple I took out and now can’t remember why.
Definitely a lot of good to take away from your bag setup that would benefit most amateurs. I don’t necessarily want to give up distance but whenever I go to get fit I prioritize consistency and versatility. Most of the improvement in my game has come from getting fit for a putter and the over 200 yards clubs.
Mark…I really enjoyed this video…I purchased the Wilson D9 irons (5-gap wedge)…added a Callaway sand & lob wedge…really like these videos you have been putting out…keep putting out great stuff
Great feedback on the gapping overlaps for different shots. I have 18 degree 3H and 5W but I hit the wood much higher about the same or slightly farther than the hybrid. I also carry the 6 iron 26 degree as my longest and it meets up nice with my 21 degree 4H
Very similar to my bag down in the irons and wedges. I have Srixon ZX5s that I got fitted into 5-PW. My wedges are Cleveland CBX-2 for my 48*, and my 52* and 56* are RTX4s with lower bounce. Top of the bag is a fitter's dream...TaylorMade Stealth+ with Project X hzrdus Smoke Blue RDX driver, Ping G425 3 wood Tour X shaft, and Callaway Epic Flash 7 wood 21*.
Great to hear Mark advocating for the need to tailor your bag to what you need and what works for you, because I’ve been doing it for years. I have always been excellent with fairway woods and have struggled with irons … I initially replaced my longer irons with hybrids, but the flight and trajectory were not as consistent as I would like, so I ended up opted for more fairway woods and my handicap has improved as a result. Bag now is: Ping driver; XXIO 4 & 7 woods; Calloway Epic 9 & 11 woods; 6-PW & GW Ping G410 irons; and Ping Glide 55 & 60 degree wedges; and a TaylorMade Spider X putter. Sound strange to you that I’ve got 4 different brands of club? … I’m 61 years old and playing off 9 because I’m happy to employ the clubs that work for me, while others don’t even consider deviating from the norm.
I've got more brands than that in my bag. LOL I've got a Taylor Made driver. A Ping 5 wood. A Cleveland 7 wood. A Callaway hybrid. Mizuno irons. Kirkland wedges (incredible for the price) and Ray Cook putter. If I can't hit a club, it comes out of the bag. Even with all of those brands, I only carry 12 clubs. My Mizuno irons are just 7-GW + 2 Kirland wedges 56,60. Thinking about grabbing up one of those Cleveland Chippers.
Thanks for the content. I have gotten away from the traditional thinking as well, thanks to your videos, and began to fill my bag with clubs that improve my game. Videos like this are always helpful in changing the mindset of what is common and what I should do to improve my game.
I have a mix Callaway Mizuno bag. Went with Rogue ST Max LS and Max 3 wood. Had huge trouble finding the right top end but found it with the Mizuno pro FliHi 3 iron. Irons 4-pw Mizuno JPX 921 Forged Callaway Jaws Raw 50,55,60 Odyssey Eleven putter
I agree Mark. Golf should be fun and enjoyable, so if my handicap drops I'm going to use game improvement irons not forged blades or similar. I like the hollow body irons also. Can you suggest hybrids that are not draw bias as the ones I have tested as a lefty tended to go left to right.
My best change has been game improvement iron Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220h they make the game easy and my control and consistency has gone right up. Thank for helping my one little what I thought was a problem clubs over lapping to much I will now put my 27 deg hybrid in as it crosses my six iron alot but it gets up into orbit
I love that you’re putting together a bag that anyone could game. It’s not about this years sexiest irons. I just ordered a set of P790’s, I asked myself why am I making this game harder than it has to be? That’s a question a lot of am’s need to ask, play what you want to play and what helps you get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes
Mark I’m going back to almost everything Cleveland. I’m currently waiting on my Launcher XL irons and CBX wedges to arrive. I also carry a 60 deg Tour Action 588 lob wedge. Also have a Cleveland Classic Collection 1 putter. My driver is a Cobra F 9. My 19 degree hybrid is a Taylormade 2001 rescue. Currently shopping for a 3-wood.
I would game a chipper no problem. Currently experimenting with my 22 degree hybrid for chipping, but the more upright shaft on the chipper might be better.
Always fun to see what you have in the bag. Rather than a chipper (I have 2 in the cupboard) I've cut down a 48 wedge. So easy to chip and pitch with. Try it?
Very interesting idea to use two PW with different lofts but I think I’d want to bend the ZX7 1-2* weaker to gap to my specialist wedges (52,56,60). If I end up getting ZX4 irons I’ll talk to my fitter about that option vs the ZX4 gap wedge.
I have been playing the same Z Star Srixon Divide ball for a few weeks now. Love the ball. Love the understated colors but it's different from my playing partners and easy to spot. The white is a pearl white and really almost glows. The ball is super durable as well. I played 72 straight holes with one ball recently and honestly it was a bit dulled over all those rounds but barely marked up. Love it on the greens as well with yellow side always facing me when I putt. I used the Q Star Divide for a while but wasn't really fond of the colors and feel of the cover...
Mark, I use chucky clubs at the high end of my bag. I have a Ping crossover 3i & 5i. Callaway Rogue ST Max driver, TaylorMade Stealth 5 wood, Ping G425 7 wood, PXG 0211 irons (6-PW), Cleveland CBX2 52 & 58 degree, Odyssey Ten 2-Ball putter. I have room for one more club. Maybe a chipper...
When you went through the wedges I was about to race in to the comments and drop in the “C” bomb. Astonished you didn’t have it in after the review the other day. Then you gave the cheeky hint and I realised. “He’s one of us” and settled back down. I think you will keep it in. Had one for a while now and and it still saves me shots. Interesting bag with great reasoning for every club 👌
A little different than my set up. I go Sim driver, tsi2 3 wood, p790 2iron, 4-pw mp20s, 52, 58, 64 degree vokeys for my wedges. I’m debating about dropping the 2 iron and putting a 5 wood in and getting a beefier 4 iron for to hit stingers with instead.
I use a Slazenger HANDY SANDY! Ball comes out superb. Wet sand , fluffy sand. Makes a lovely soft woosh when you hit behind the ball. Any distance around the greens. Not ashamed at all!
I have mainly Ping G30 due to you played this a period when I was storting up with golf after many years. But I think this is the year to uppgrade. Driver Ping G425 Max 5W Ping G30 Iron 4-W Ping G30 50, 54, 58 Ping Glide 1.0
Yes, not only would I game a chipper, ive been carrying the Cleveland chipper for almost a year. I feel Mark snuck a look into my bag. I carry the Zx4s irons, a Cleveland cbx wedge, and a 3H & 4H.
LOL, been using a chipper for 20 yards in for a couple years. Always get the ball on the green with a putting stroke. Holed quite a few with it.... Put on a jumbomax grip....... money club!
I love the practicality of your bag and that you've chosen clubs that make golf easier! I was thinking that gap from 6 iron to 22 hybrid was too big but I looked up and found that the zx4 6 is 25.5 so that explains it. I am just starting a new bag with ping i500 irons to 6 iron, then sim hybrid at 25 degrees so a fairly similar concept.
I’ve been considering pulling the 3W out anyway since I just don’t gain enough difference between it and the 5W anymore. So the chipper would fit in nicely with the rest of my Cleveland XLs. I’ve learned a lot from you Mark about clubs and the silly reasons we choose them. I’ve completely changed my outlook on clubs and now have the “ugliest “ set by traditional standards I’ve ever had, but it’s also my favorite set. I shot a 76 yesterday on a horrible ball striking day that my old clubs would have made worse rather than salvageable like my new set. Just get it in the hole and quit worrying about cool points.
Knew the bonus had to be chipper, but I'd seen the video introducing that club. Has me thinking about adding one - currently carry 2 fairway woods, but find I only use one of them.

Still my favorite UA-camr. Love the honesty and casual conversation style of delivery. Ty

Cheers
Go for it. I find it silly we are all so worried about 14 clubs only.
Lol, most of the time I only have 11 or 12 clubs in my bag. I'll change my set up, depending on the course I'll going to play.
I say learn how to chip or practice more, take a lesson
Well, practice makes us better. I am an okay chipping with my 7 iron or wedge at times, but with work and family. Leaves little time for practice. Sometimes we all need a little crutch.
Just get one if it will help you to have more fun on the course, you're not a PGA pro getting ridiculed using it at the Masters 😉
I upgraded a few Clubs last Year, PTX pro Irons, grabbed a PXG 0811 Driver and a Bettinardi Putter. Every 10 years or so I change a few.
Quality content every video unlike other up and coming channels 🤓
Yes, and i do. Love these vids mark, always full of informative ideas backed up with data
Thanks for watching.
At the moment, I am going with:
TM M6 driver at 10.5
Ping G400 fairway at 16.5
Ping G400 hybrids at 19 and 22
Ben Hogan PTx irons from 25 to 45 degrees
Ben Hogan Equalizers at 50 and 56
TM Spider putter
Vice Pro ball
Working pretty well, but might have to check out that Cleveland Halo XL hybrid.
What are the PTX pros like mate, are they as soft as a Mizuno say? And how was the service from ordering them off the site etc?
@@GTF85 I’m not familiar with the newer Mizuno irons. The older forged models feel very soft, probably a bit softer than the Hogan irons. I had no issues with service ordering clubs from the Ben Hogan website.
I am a mid 80's player on a 68 par course and I use only 4 clubs. Driver, chipper, wedge and putter. Yes, the chipper is my go to club.
I think u will help a lot of people with your attitude towards what you put in your bag . Well Done .
Love this Mark. Ego is a killer of most games.
Just dropped my 5 iron and switched to hybrid, fairway woods!! Just don't have the swing speed to get much out of long irons - so good to see you having a similar set up! Loving a 7 wood! Who would have thought it! Great vid, thanks Mark
Glad you always have fun with golf. That's the point
Cleveland makes very soft feeling putters. Love them
Nice vid Mark, that chipper would have come in handy on some very wet Celtic manor courses over the weekend. Maybe it’s a winter club special
I dropped my 4 iron, lofted my hybrid and added a 5 wood. Looking forward to the year!
What is so endearing of Crossfield is this could easily be the WITB for an 18 handicapper. Never lets ego drive equipment decisions and this helped me to keep mine in check!
I only have 13 clubs as well.Driver, 4 Wood, hybrid, 5 to pw, 52 58 and 64 degree wedges and putter
The Crossy wedge! I actually just got P, G, and C wedges in the smart sole 4 satin and am loving the simplicity, almost automation, of play with them.
Very mixed set mark , been watching your channel for years , curious have your scores improved with type of make up 🤔
Thanks for the content. I have gotten away from the traditional thinking as well, thanks to your videos, and began to fill my bag with clubs that improve my game. Videos like this are always helpful in changing the mindset of what is common and what I should do to improve my game.
Just bought an Odyssey X-Act Tank Chipper. Loving it so far
Would you game a chipper? Definitely if it helps my chipping. Plenty of winter lies like that at my course. Probably some in “summer” too.
So happy to be hear the Chipper made the bag, hope it stays there!!
Great video that. Spot on Mark. play what suits. 👏🏼
I was genuinely not thinking about the ZX4 or any chunky club because of peoples reaction. I’ll add them to the list to try in my fitting
I also have 2 pitching wedges a MP15 bet 2 degrees strong (44) and an MP64 bent 2 weak (48) works great
I would game a chipper no problem. Currently experimenting with my 22 degree hybrid for chipping, but the more upright shaft on the chipper might be better.
Those rusty wedges would give me OCD problems... I'd want to polish them 😜
Cobra SZ extreme, sim max 3 wood, 21* razor 7 wood, mp h5 irons 50 arc wedge and 54/58 zipcores and a Scotty Newport mid slant 2.5
Lets go! I have a chipper in my bag as well! love that thing.
Never thought I’d approve of a chipper but I liked that.
It’d be great in firm conditions from some way out.
Always fun to see what you have in the bag. Rather than a chipper (I have 2 in the cupboard) I've cut down a 48 wedge. So easy to chip and pitch with. Try it?
Would be interested to see a video of you talking about your philosophy behind playing game improvement clubs as a good player.
I bought the square strike chipper and am actually gaining strokes for the first time in my short game.
Love the philosophy! "Get it in the hole with the least number of strokes." That is certainly what the game is about.
Chipper is cool……nice understated looks.
I’m thinking of gaming the chipper but I am definitely getting the smart sole sandwedge
Driver Ping G425 Max
5W Ping G30
Iron 4-W Ping G30
50, 54, 58 Ping Glide 1.0
How good you've put the Crossy in hahaha love it.
