Mark, I'm relatively new to the UA-cam golf world (12+ months or thereabouts, on and off). I just have to say that I find your videos so refreshing and nothing but no-nonsense advice. Truth be told, I've rewatched some of them multiple times at this stage to iron in the lesson given. You make content that helps, first and foremost but it's highly enjoyable to watch too. One of your videos on grip and wrist movement helped me incredibly this summer - thank you. Keep em coming.
It’s funny, not disputing this at all but in my lessons I was told not to align myself left or right. Now I’ve learned to aim at the target and I’m bang on line almost every time.
All valid points and useful to know…however in a practice somewhat flawed…70% of golfers probably have no idea where they are aiming most of the time…or rather they are not aiming where they think they are! Enjoyed the vid though…food for thought for tomorrows round!
When I was in high school, I could get a zero path zero face consistently for a short period of time. I’ve learned to take your advice and to play shot shapes. As long as I’m neutral enough, it’s doable to draw and fade it now, and it has made my game so much better. Especially with driver bombing draws and fades is WAY more fun than trying to hit it straight and failing 😂
i know that when i am coaching aim has to be the one that people get wrong the most. the influence that it has on the swing and the shot is massive, and such an easy fix.

Being reminded of the basics every once in a while is of huge value. I was thinking more about open or closed face to get shot shape but forgot it impacts start line so needs to change aim point.

This is so true. Especially the path and the feet being in the wrong spots. I’ve been struggling with this for years and it really ruins your golf. Get this part right and you will play decent golf. So many coaches really just skim over this and focus more on grip or path but I think this needs to be correct from the get go otherwise you will have a two way miss

Wow thanks for the advice I am a new golfer with a major slice problem. I can’t wait to try out this strategy hopefully it will help me out greatly. Keep making great videos a lot of us cannot afford lessons and this is one of our only ways to learn. Also any more ideas on slicing I am open to new ideas

Biggest improvement I’ve seen in the strike was to ”aim” my feet to the right of the target and feel like the face is really, really shut. Getting anchored to rail road tracks etc. and not just playing around with alignment is very much a detriment to amateur golfers and high handicappers especially.
Great stuff Mark. I’m a straight ball hitter on majority of shots so train track aim works in most cases for me, but I will adjust things if trying to shape it. Shaping for me is more extreme instances for obstacle avoidance type shots. I’m definitely an oddity for how little my ball shapes on a standard shot, but what little it does move is left to right so any miss left is a pull or toe dipper MIs-strike and not an aim issue.

Tour players target a particular spot on the green, anticipating the roll-out (if any) and the angle they're taking. That angle can influence the shot's flight (draw or fade or straight) or the other way around. In short, they work back from the hole to their current lie.

I curved my shots for the first time today. Spent the next ten swings trying to figure out how I did that. Still not sure, but this video gives me something to try.
I have a slight fade with driver/3 wood but a draw with my irons … it’s my go to shots to play stress free and it works for me 4handicap
Shoulders and swing path are my primary aim point . Set up train track and see what my practice swing says . Im a naturally open ish fader but if the lie acts on my body in such a way that dictates a draw shot then that’s what I aim for . Good lie level playing field then im aim down the middle and seeing what happens , trying to draw or fade on demand spells disaster for me .
Just as an add on , pinpoint aiming , literally leaf on a branch off the tee really really helps , it’s something I don’t do enough kinda forget the importance but it’s essential for my game .

Great tips and vid Mark, I have to keep it simple out there so I pick a spot in-front of me on the ground and set my feet for a draw or fade over that line depending on the shape the shot requires...in theory anyway. To answer your straight shot question, it's 20% ish when honest, I hate when it happens and I am set up for a draw or fade. Thank God I can chip.

Tends to be 50/50 for me straight and a baby fade and me bad shot is a snap hook left
I personally have to align my feet, hips and shoulders left of the intended target to get a club path within a few degrees to the right of the ball to target line. Aim as Mark says is quite a complex issue and needs to be tailored to your personal needs
Great advice as always Mark, off the back of this could you do some more on knowing where to miss and how that affects your aim and where you would expect the ball to land
Great info Mark. I’m relatively new to the game and I find as my swing develops, where I need to aim and the relation of the club face to the target, change as well. The game does keep you guessing!
I would say it depends on the hole location, the slope of the green, if it's a sucker pin, but I don't think most pros take dead aim directly at the flag stick and look more to aim at the best spot/location on the green with whatever shot shape they vision,,,..or the shot calls for. Just my humble opinion of course. I like using the lines on the driving range balls either aimed at the target or as Mark shows here, for an alignment training aid. Good stuff.

Mark this is a great video. You are an awesome teacher and hugely knowledgeable. I don't know why you bother with the political stuff about what other people post on UA-cam. Unnecessary imo. But again this is awesome and eye opening 🤩
I'm no pga pro or coach but I'm not bad at the game. I've always thought that having a flat wrist at the top (no bowing either direction) like Tiger and Rory allows you to be in control of where and how the ball flight is shaped by only having to change set up and swinging down your feet's line. Am I right here or just making things up?

I ALWAYS setup to play a deliberate draw or fade with full swings. You'll never see my foot line pointed at the target. Eliminating the 2-way miss dropped my handicap a bunch. If I aim at the target, I might miss with a push-fade or a pull-draw giving me a 50 yard potential dispersion. If I aim right side of the green with a face pointed at the pin, the worst right miss I'll get is a straight push that lands right side of the green. I will almost never go into the trees on the right.

Went to a range recently as hadnt been for about 2 years. (Moved to new area). I took aim at a target 150yards away. I stuck a club on the ground across my toe line and stepped back to see i was actually aligning about 15yards left when set up with my face square. But it felt like I was aiming straight. This set up meant to actually hit target (that i thought was straight) I would have to hit a fade. I must have been doing this for ages. It still feels weird after another 100 balls yesterday, I now feel really closed off and I have to retrain my mind that this is now straight and trust it, as my brain is playing tricks on me. I have to repeatedly step back even with alignment sticks as Im still convinced I am aiming 15 yards further right than I am. Very strange.

Back in the day we were encouraged to use the width of the tee box to help your shot. Big fade/slice tee up far right side of tee box, big draw/hook tee up far left side of tee box to effectively give you double the width of fairway to “aim” at.
Don’t see this mentioned much these days, is it still a good idea ?
And...as you get older, your flexibility varies a lot from day to day, so today's draw alignment can easily be tomorrow's push fade alignment. It's something you have to figure out every time you play.

Love some of the ideas . Do you have any tips to stop the feel and visual look of pointing left or right of target line even though you are along correctly with someone checking even find it hard with puts . Lined straight but feel like it is aiming way right

I admit im a terrible flag hunter,it hard to give it up! I enjoy a long shot going straight at the flag, but for that 1 birdie im probably getting 2 bogeys! thats a major reason,(apart from lack of distance) im a 5-7 hcp!

I draw everything except my driver. On good drivers days I hit a cut the miss will be a bit of pull.
It’s nice to know where the ball is going to go but most of us don’t, we hope it just does
I hit the ball stupidly straight, but i know its wrong due to excessive lateral motion although i struggle to feel it.Proof is my divots,this time of year. are long,shallow and straight. The downside is i only carry it 200,i think i waste my athletic ability keeping clubface square, (like a lot of golfers that start late in life this is due to avoiding the embarrassment of missing,topping and trying to keep it straight), so not going to break 70! this winter im going to try and give up straight for distance.
2 things that I see so often. People take the club and place across on the knees or hips to aim correctly (they think) - but it is actually their shoulder line that is far more important. If you shoulders poing 30 degree left, you can have whatever hip aim, you will pull it across.
The best thing to practise is you have 20 balls. Play 3 balls fade, 3 ball strigt, and 3 ball draw. Afterwards 3 balls big slice, 3 balls stright and 3 balls massive hook. You learn the setup feeling and know where not to go.

So is it face angle or club path that determines ball flight? If I swing neutral with an open face will it fade / slice or go straight right? , I’ve been thinking club path determines start line and face angle determines flight, please clarify 🤷
It makes total sense to play your natural shape. How do you control it though when your fade is 5 metres one shot and 35 metres the next?
Just try an roll your hands at impact ; that may help to control your slice to a mild fade .keep the same swing

Are you aiming your club face at the target and then open or close your stance?
Do you reckon you could go round a standard par 72 course in less than 100 playing left handed?
If both feet are flared out equally would that be the equivalent of aiming straight?
I laugh at people who think golf is static, mechanical or 2D. Watch another sport and see how a tennis player manipulates the ball or how a footballer uses the different parts of their foot to shape the ball. The golf swing is no different. The more skilled can explore aim and use it to their advantage
Aim and alignment are little different. Also one need to understand even the smallest differences in alignment and taking dead aim.
For instance, if you alignment is closed, you may determine a shot being a push, yet it actually was straight compared to the stance.

I pick my target… work out where I need to aim to hit that target after adding in variables then align myself depending on what shot I want to play to that aim point

I find it difficult to line up parallel. When I look down I feel I’m straight but ball fades with irons. I have to drop my right foot back an inch or two to hit straight. Is it an optical illusion as I’m a glasses wearer and they are varifocal.
My stock, good shot is a straight ”fade”.
Yesterday at the range I hooked the driver until I aimed the face to the right of the target then only i get solid contact

I hit the ball straight, every time I'm trying to draw or fade it 🙄. On all other shots, the ball decides where it wants to go, so aiming seems irrelevant 😂.

And just for a giggle for the auld UA-cam algorithm, how do I get on plane?
Now that everyone hits it 330 or more off of the tee, they are all aiming at flags. Every single one of them have a wedge in their hand on approach and are pin seeking. Driver, fairway wood and 4 wedges is all you need in the bag anymore. If it werent for par 3's being 220 yards, a 7 iron would be extinct, lol

100% disagree, for most of us (club/normal) golfers, having a generic ball position and setup is far more beneficial than changing it for shape, most golfers aren't consistent enough with their delivery for this to make a difference
What’s a generic setup? The curvature of the hole, the shot ur trying to hit like draw or fade and the lie or slope are always effecting ball positions and setup. What mark is pointing out is the skill of knowing the consequences of your ball position and setup. That’s what the best in the world are so good at is there awareness of the shot and the adapting to it. Good golfer or weekend golfer being aware of these things and making the correct change to hit the correct shot will always make you a better golf. Mark is 100% right
But this is a suggestion of something to try. What harm can it do to any golfer (club/normal) to try it out for themselves?? This is free coaching🤷. Thank you Mark Crossfield👍

Your both entirely missing my argument, being able to deliver a consistent face to path and then working on aim is far more beneficial
@@neiltaylor1765 dude we are all trying to create the most repeatable pattern possible that’s to objective in golf, like no shit. But ur missing marks point, he’s just trying to make u understand that body alignment in coordination with ball position has a big impact on club path and face to path. Playing with body alignment and ball position and seeing the different shapes or shots they create is a great we to make ur path and face to path more consistent because ur becoming more aware of these things but also becoming more aware of ur tendencies and will probably neutralize ur numbers and such. Mark is just trying to make golfers more aware the impact of body alignment and ball placement on there path and face to path.
