  • I like to do everything myself. and quite often that reveals a long path of failures and frustrations.. I try to revive the cylinder heads of the AZU but due to lack of skills, tools and knowledge, I end up doing more damage than good.

    I like the fact that you have been honest. Anyone who works on old cars knows that thing don't go 100% to plan. Keep up the great videos

    Its not a fail, its a lesson for next time. If we don't make mistakes, we don't learn.

    You probably know this already, but an easy way to remove the valve seats is to run a MIG weld bead along them, the shrinkage as they cool is normally enough to make it easy to remove them. Given that you have a "practice" head now, you could try to replace the seat. Heat the head in an oven to 100C, keeping it combustion chamber side up to avoid the other seat falling out, then using a freeze spray, or better, dry ice, to cool the new seat, and they will pretty much drop into place if the temperature difference is enough. Replacement 2CV valve seats, I assume, are probably readily available.

    Love the fact you show your failures as well as successes shows good "karma". I like to use the kitchen oven to heat up parts to get even heating. I know the part is hot enough when i get a scream from my wife investigating the strange smell in the kitchen.

    Good effort.
    Next time buy some oversized valves +1mm. And use 30 and 60 degree cutters to dial in 45 degree seat with. Basically, 30 and 60 degree cutters remove the excess seat material, to bring the seat with from 3mm to 1mm.

    Been there, done that. One of those "how hard can it be" moments.

    If you know someone with a machine shop, could they not ream out oversize the shattered part then insert a steel bushing that can take the guides?

    Too bad! But those who never fail, never get their hands dirty!

    You should not TURN the reamer backwards but it can be removed in the same direction as it was inserted

    You had a good learning day Seppo! I'm really looking forward to seeing the AZU being driven on the road again, such a cute little work horse.

    nothing wrong with pulling a reamer out the way it went in, just keep rotating at all times, and never rotate backwards.

    Sometimes you have to admit, yes it’s hard!, that some needed work must be done by a third party aka the machine shop. No screw ups, all just done well.
    First you heat up the cylinder in an oven. The heat will be through and through. Then you pick out the valve guides from the freezer. Best is to have nitrogen to freeze it even more just before pressing the valve guides in.

    Great video - a good warning to peope also doing it for the first time, may help people avoid the same pitfalls...those seats were sort of very soft , ,maybe not suitable for unleaded ..as normal seperate seats like that require grinding, not cutting, cutting is for the cast iron heads with no seperate seats.

    • @kosir1234
      @kosir1234 Місяць тому

      nay, you can cut hardened seats, tungsten carbide will cut hardened... and it works. grinding is just a new hype.

    I'm sure we've all broken engine parts trying to so things for the first time, I've got a few garden tool enignes I've broken in the process of trying to maintain, repair or adapt, cos I wasn't experienced in what I was doing, after all, mistakes are a lesson in learning what to do... :)

    Good job how ever the way I do valves is the same using a lapping stick but rather than using solvent is a touch safer more visual as you recut the seat that's the way I was many year's ago at tech college. Easy to correct just need a bit more pressure on on the stick to do the jobcleaning as you go one other thing the valve guild might be slightly to far though as I done it myself plenty of times I do enjoy your kids

  • @chriscansdale6389

    The valve you didn't succeed with looked to be too recessed anyway.. I imagine it wouldn't be too expensive to just get new hardened seats fitted and therefore save that head. You also then get the benefit of less vsr in the future now we dont have leaded fuel anymore.. you only learn from experience...😊

    • @SeasideGarage
      @SeasideGarage  Місяць тому

      They are already hardned... :)
      But one head broken and the other one with the defective valve seat, it makes more sense to me (and the wallet) to use the spares...
