    popularity is fleeting. You may delude yourself into thinking you've got 1000 friends but the truth is they're all acquaintances. No one truly knows anyone.

      that's actually true... popular people simply have a lot of acquaintances they are on friendly terms with, but they aren't really intimate close friends bc no one can be really intimate with lots of people.

    Where I went, during highschool, I feel like nobody cared about "high school popularity" which I'm grateful for. You could literally socialize with anyone without fear of getting bullied or whatever. In fact there was no such thing as a "popular Jock who bullies a bunch of nerdy kids". If there was, pretty much everyone in the school would outcast this person.

    • @2easy4gaming12
      @2easy4gaming12 5 місяців тому +76

      That's the same as my school. At my school theres athlete of the week, but theres nobody in the school that ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE in the school knows of. Although there are a handful of show offs, everyone sticks to their own friend group. Also no bullying, so any fighting that goes on has something to do with personal issues going on with the 2 people.

    • @Crispy-Chips
      @Crispy-Chips 5 місяців тому +33

      @2easy4gaming12 that's actually really great. Though, at my school, the football players are pretty well known mostly because it's an American high school, but the majority "popular" football players are really laid back, chill and overall humble and good people. They act more like the older siblings you'll wish you had.
      Also, you don't have to read this last paragraph. It's a story as evidence that people will literally outcast bullies in real life. But there was this one football player named "Landon", and no one really liked whatsoever, even if he was in a pretty good position (wide receiver, I'm pretty sure). A lot of people I talked to pretty much made fun of him, including his other teammates due to his controversial history, I cant really remember what happened back in middle school with him but it was nothing good I gauruntee. This, Landon, was a prick to pretty much everyone in the school, and everyone would just shut him down if he even thought about bullying someone. But then one day he decided to threaten one of the football players with a pocket knife. It was made worse because there was talk of Landon being a racist, and he threatened a black football player. That was a BIG mistake. When everyone got word of this all the students either bullied Landon, shut him out of his life or worse. The guy probably lost every single friend, if he had any, and got kicked off the football time. Now that's what I call getting humbled 🤣. I don't know what Landon is doing now, but I don't really care enough about him to look into it. He's probably making thirst traps on tik tok or something.

    It’s hard to find a social group to stick around after something ends. College/HS friends split. Often times you won’t talk to the people you used to once you leave a job/sports team.
    And now, once you’ve left that social group, those people you hung out with everyday, you’d be lucky if they even checked in on you once a year.

    so glad I only cared about learning and having a good time in high school. I had a solid circle of friends and good grades - that's all that mattered.
    One time a popular girl had befriended and confided in me. She asked if I ever felt fake, I said no. She said she was into anime and was afraid of being teased for it, but saw me with anime merch or cosplay to school on Halloween and wanted to know "how I was so confident" doing so. I told her that after being bullied a lot in middle school, I stopped caring what people thought and did what I wanted to do. I hope helped her.

    I feel like I got an advantage in this regard because I went fully online during freshman year of HS. Used to screw around 24/7 in middle school because I was obsessed with what other people thought about me, especially because I was fat and obviously got bullied for it. Then Covid hit and I pretty much became a hermit for 4 years. I actually started studying after gaming and watching tv got boring and I stopped caring about social crap. It helps that I started to work out but my confidence is now through the roof. I genuinely don’t understand why some people are so obsessed with looking cool or being popular so I just do whatever tf I want and it tends to work. That freedom can be a huge de-stressor when I see all of my friends worried about not looking cool or associating with “uncool” people and I just do it now not giving a damn.
    It’s really freeing when you stop caring what people think about you or what they say especially when their opinions have nothing to really merit the weight other people give them. Like why tf do I care what a dude on the football team says about another dude and why do I care about what the part time twitch streamer says? Just be you cuz none of this is gonna matter in a year or two.

    My high school experience was good because it was the one place where I could truly be myself. I was raised in a Cult (JWs) so there were always expectations of me that were way too restrictive and fucking stupid. When I was at school, I could be my authentic (unmedicated Bipolar 1) self so I was popular. But, I always knew that there was much more to life than high school and I spent time looking into all kinds of options on what to do next and I knew that as soon as I got my diploma, the friend groups I had would scatter to the 4 winds, which is what is supposed to happen. After graduating in 2011, I only kept in regular contact with my best friend since 8th grade and once he stopped taking his meds for paranoid schizophrenia, I had to cut contact for the sake of my own mental health. Now that I'm out The Cult and medicated, I'm basically just acting like I did in high school but with no guilt and adult freedom.

    Personally I dont think that being popular in highschool doest necessarily mean you're gonna be a failure in life. It's mostly have to do with how these people will handle the distractions in high school e.g: girls,parties, dances etc. Cause i know alot of people who were popular in high school but knew not to let the distractions get to them, and so they were the people who also ended up doing good after high school. So from retrospective I think it depends on how the popular kids handle "being popular" that will determine whether they're flops rather than just being a popular kid in general.

    Here’s my two cents on the matter: Everything in high school seems like your whole world or at least a major part of it when you are in the thick of it, but once you leave and step into the real world, you realize that your high school experience is merely a drop of water in an ocean of vastness if that
    I think that’s a big reason why many peoples’ lives change a lot after high school including myself because you get a better perspective to see if your high school friends are actually good now that you have more opportunities at your disposal instead of being stuck with them
    I remember thinking that I wanted to be in the spotlight more during high school but I’m glad I wasn’t since it gave me the space to develop myself and actually reach a high point in my life now where I get to be more well known as a result of who I am and the goals I set for myself instead of trying to force myself onto others for the sake of attention seeking, you can’t expect others to help and care about you if you don’t keep doing that for yourself first

  • @redwolf8135
    @redwolf8135 5 місяців тому +8

    I think that a lot of it has to do with where you went to high school. At an affluent/upper class school where most graduates go on to college, most of the popular kids probably come from affluent/well off families, do well in school and end up going to college, graduating, getting connections, and getting good paying jobs. At a more working class or lower income school where most graduates do not go to college, the popular kids are more likely to not have success after high school.

    • @LudovicaParziale
      @LudovicaParziale 3 місяці тому

      To that I would also add that popular kids with affluent parents from my country are often lazy and not ambitious.
      The asshole ones still try to relive with all their might their high school environment. They are insecure about their academic skills and they have no drive because they were spoiled the entire time, as a result they feel they can't measure up to their parents' careers and are anxious about their “social prestige” fading because the next step to maintain it during adulthood is having a respectable career (and wealth).
      The nice ones have more passions outside of partying and buying clothes, they are excellent communicators, but oftentimes are not disciplined, they graduate later and do not aim higher because they would rather hang out with their friends the moment they get asked out. They don't have a “growth mindset” so to speak and they would rather stay in their comfort zone. They also tend to hang out with their middle school circle, they're not very interested in expanding their social circle at uni.
      Then there are the ones who are able to go through the same path their parents did, usually in Law though. I don't know about this category in depth but one of them told me his relatives asked him to pursue Law because all his cousins were doing whatever the hell they wanted, so he did. He seems to like it but I don't know him well to know what his actual thoughts are
      Another one felt the pressure to study Medicine because all her cousins also didn't have “nice” careers, just normal jobs, but she hated Medicine and didn't pass the entrance exams. Right now I only know she works as a secretary at her father's studio.
      Another one is in economics but hasn't given any exams. She wanted to be a beautician but was forced by her parents to go to university. She's very nice but she just wants to have fun with her friends all the time and relies too much on her beauty to get ahead, with no discipline or planning for the future.
      Two guys who were materialistic and obsessed with money and chicks went to study Finance but then dipped. One of them is a mechanic now.
      So it's weird to me when I see Americans say all the popular kids are super successful now because they have self-esteem, social skills etc. One of the problems they often have to face is the fact that they aren't ambitious and can't measure up to their ambitious and successful parents, and some of them feel a sense of responsibility to inherit their parents' careers despite wanting to do something else. Their popularity was sustained by their parents' wealth, but they don't have the drive to manage and keep producing that wealth. That compromises their social standing and they often end up panicking because of it and relying on beauty, one-night-stands and nightclub life to feel a sense of importance, but that only exacerbates their insecurities even more.
      The popular kids who are ambitious do end up being successful, but they're a minority in my area. Most of them only fear the future and think about the “now” and aren't planning any life projects.

Yes there was an anime and video game group of people but my confidence level was low, I was shy, I was suffering from depression and had social anxiety, then I was super shy and super quiet. Since I didnt had anyone to talk to after school I pretended that I had someone to talk to so I ended go to a quiet area during lunch time and talk to myself. Then we have some teachers telling me why dont I have friends or why i ain't participating in any school activities with my peers. I told them people are mean. Then she'll give me lunch detention whenever I dont talk to people too. I was a quiet and super shy kid. My relationship status including today is non existent. I was on the verge of taking my own life until my parents bought me a ps3 and I made friends after friends after friends that I've met online. If I didnt meet them, I wouldn't been here today. Senior got better for me however, it didn't stop me from being super shy, super quiet and having trust issues with people I dont know. Literally, life after highschool was the best years of my life! I have a kick ass car, have a good steady job, saving for a house. The only issue I currently have is my relationship status. That's it.

    As a senior in high school, don’t worry about being popular. Anyone doing really well socially in high school will probably end up flipping burgers in the future. Some of those kids who are bullied, called, weird and ugly and fat or whatever are you gonna be the people who are changing this world. High school is not real life. You only stay there for a few years and then you leave and only thing you left with from high school is your diploma your and whoever was close with you be friends with you past high school. High school should be focused on getting good grades of course stay out of trouble close friendships remembering that quality is way more important than quantity and of course, having fun because you won’t be this young forever, but not too much fun to the point where you’re addicted to like five drugs by the time you’re 17 or something. I’m a bad kid. I’m in nowhere popular anyway, but I’m well achieved. I had good grades throughout most of high school. I never got drugs and I cared about my attendance. I might have never been popular never really been invited anywhere except maybe twice never really been the relationship or anything, but at least I was well achieved academically and have hope for outside high school. At our school drugs and all that is not really seed as cool and people actually respect you if you’re academically achieved and I’m not even sure if there’s popular kids because there’s some kids who are popular on Instagram have the whole school wearing their clothes and all that.

    I was never really popular in high school but for a brief moment I was considered popular I guess? I was an academic student and participated in many extracurricular activities which made me so well known. I was also the many few openly gay people in my grade and a lot of guys either hated me because of that or secretly were attracted me cause they were closeted or something. Girls were just as vicious too, they treated me just like a girl simply because I was gay. The bitchiness, backhandedness, and mean girl tactics they used on each other would apply to me as well for some reason. And some of the hate I got was for no reason, they hated me because I existed and because I was always seen as an outcast so for them to see me getting as popular as them fueled them with hate and jealousy towards me. I’m not really a feminine gay guy so girls would justify hating me because they thought I wasn’t being myself or was misogynistic for not meeting their stereotypical beliefs of how gay men should act .💀 High school it’s petty and filled with drama because people are bored but they don’t understand how their “entertainment” can ruin peoples lives, I was suicidal and depressed because of the bullying I faced, their goal was to cancel me and destroy my reputation for fun like my life was some kind of game or show. Like I wasn’t a human being or had feelings. Unfortunately I listened to their hate and did poorly at school, I didn’t get to go the the universities I applied to because of poor performance which because of my mental health. Also my parents were getting divorced at the time and I remember them mocking my grief toward the situation because “at least they didn’t divorce when when you were really little! You’re 17 you shouldn’t even care!” It’s so easy to mock other people when you’re jot the person who’s struggling in life. Now that I’m 20 I’m trying to heal and practice self love but the scars caused by bullying cut deep. Remember people always be nice to others you never know what they’re going through even if they seem weird or out of place from the societal norm standards.

    People asked you who you liked in primary school and expect you to chose from the four most popular boy if you wanted to stop pestering you just drop one of their names. If you say any other guys name that will follow you until high school literally. And then in high school idk if it was just me but only the unattainable guys were considered to be boys (and that was the same 4 dudes from primary💀) the rest of the guys randoms. Ranked between, the ones who were your friends, class clowns, nerds, and the ones who you wanted nothing to do with.

    One of the things that ruined me is that those who were "popular" were just pretty people with my characteristics. Like if I was "arrogant", they were "confident", when I balled hard, it was a fluke, but when they swish people scream in ecstacy. Fortunately those same people got lightheaded and emotional dissecting a frog, meanwhile I'm walking through STEM as we speak. It is what it is I guess, but among other reason I'm not letting my kids go to school those MFs can memorize everything I teach them or go learn welding I aint gonna traumatize my kids. 😭 GL to all you strugglers keep your Day 1s close.

    I was never popular only well-known till now. I remember being the "new kid" in 5th grade I wasn't treated well by the popular people, and I was made fun of for some medical issues but as I grew older, I learned that some kids are just plain evil or have some sort of issues then express it on other people. Now that I'm in high school I was much better treated than in middle school. I wasn't called ugly, my medical issue got better, and I'm known as very chill, laid back, nice, and smart. As u grow older everything changes, and perspective/ideas thrown at others will change a huge amount or the slightest bit. The people that were treated like shit just end up doing good in school and actually focus on their academic process and excel well, then others don't get to graduate in time due to their foolishness. Not all popular kids are as horrible as back then, some popular kids just become the "average person they want to be", while others just want to fit in the "I'm all that" 💀 type of thing which I find rather annoying tbh. I have to give it to them though having popular kids around me also taught me that if I want to have the career I want to have, I have to toughen up a bit especially since I was pretty shy 😂.

    99% of the most popular kids end up so average to below average in life. Menwhile the regular kids end up becoming respected with good education and decent life.
    Tip to the young generation: Always plan your life for about 10 years in the future. So if you 20, have an idea of how you wanna see yourself in 10 year, not currentl because thats where younger adults make a mistake. So when you get to that age you are not worried about time invested.

    I never had beef with anyone in HS. I was an average student that did somewhat decent in classes with a mixed friend group. Only time I would cringe when people talked about how good HS was is when they thought it was real life at the time and thought their “popularity” would follow them out of school (in my case anyways) or tried to live out their party selves they did. I know a couple dudes my age and older (25) that still go to my HS football games and I stopped talking to an ex comrade who was grooming a 16 year old when he was 23 🤢 (police were anonymously by me were called)
    To anyone that’s still in high school or about to start, here’s something I wish I have done differently: Study better, take any types of help from teachers/peers. TURN IN YOUR DAMN HOMEWORK 😂 GPA matters, especially if your thinking about college after HS. Appreciate your teachers! They sacrifice their time and day to help you guys out and have a bright future! They are underpaid and have to deal with the shitheads that will act like thugs or complain why their phones are taken away while they teaching. Normalize clowning on those petty dudes/gals who act a fool to a teacher. And stand up for others 🖤

    I think part of it is as you said you are forced to be with these people, hence the chains holding all these connections together are made of paper.
    That’s why the popular kids suffer just as much as the regulars and outcasts, because their entire social life is built on this ephemeral model, and of course when it dissolves out from under them it’s a long fall down. I was somewhere between normal and outcast but if I’m honest I’m glad I learned the truth that position convays which is that people are aweful

    For me highschool was bittersweet...if i can even call it that. School was a minefield and to be honest i wish i was homeschooled. I never understood why the people who are so called "popular" even deserved that title?. They were literally just kids who didn't gaf about learning or life in general, they'd just disrupt the class, argue with teachers and come to school late and we held them to high esteem!?!. It really says a lot about society because in a way highschool mimics society, politicians lie and commit crimes yet they are still admired by people. Highschool is the worst

    Biggest example that highschool was just a bunch of kids following some other kids lead is the popularity of anime.
    Idc what anybody says, anime was not popular. Anime was lame af. Only weebs, nerds, geeks, and maybe skater kids knew about it.
    Now it is mainstream af.
    I remember when the anime and manga section of a store was a single combined shelf, now McDonald's has entire ad campaigns based on anime.
    Idc what nobody says, before 2016, no one liked anime.

    I agree with this video 100%. I believe that this logic applies to college students as well. I grew up with special needs for my mental challenges and had a terrible time socially in High School... when I went off to university I was way too obsessed with being one of the guys that were partying and sleeping around because I was convinced that's what I had to do to "redeem myself" after being so "pathetic" in High School. Ngl, pursuing that got me into really sticky situations my freshman and sophomore year, and I've been way happier with my life within the past two years of being a college graduate than in school. Popularity in High School doesn't mean shit after you graduate High School, nor does popularity in college matter after college. Just stop worrying and have a good day.

    Being 10 years removed from high school myself, here's my general advice: Don't annihilate yourself with stress. If just going to school is high-stress, bring that up with your counselor, teachers, parents if you can, peers, anybody, until that gets fixed. Stress contributes to burnout and if you get burnt out on school and learning in high school it's going to carry over to college and speaking from experience, you're going to fuck yourself over.

    if you’re relatively intelligent and emotionally somewhat stable/slightly mature you’ll notice that people around you generally won’t agree with your opinions.
    being edgy and mean is far more “entertaining” to many kids than being empathetic and grounded. there was this guy in my class who kept saying/doing very problematic things because he found it funny how it triggered people/made him feel smart and real edgy by saying these things.
    i’m talking being aggressively misogynistic, pretending to be a nazi, etc. edgy teen behaviour you know.
    whenever i talked about sensitivity with my peers, or called him out for saying something that’s WAY over the line (like when in the middle of a literature lesson he goes [IN FRONT OF OUR FEMALE TEACHER]: “well i think it’s the woman’s fault if she gets raped”) i’d get called a “radical feminazi”.
    no, no i’m not. i just think the world doesn’t revolve around any one person and i don’t care that you and your friendgroup “joke about this all the time”. it’s not okay to say such bullshit in a school environment like this, you don’t know what people around you went through and it’s dangerous to frame these comments as “harmless comedy”. most women face some kind of harassment in my country. i’m not the “radical” one, i’m the grounded person who feels we should THINK about what and where we’re saying things.
    entertaining your edgy friendgroup isn’t a good enough reason to do something so harmful and distracting (this happened during a LESSON).
