Kodak Vision3 on Medium Format Cameras | Mamiya RZ67 + Mamiya 7

  • Shot some Kodak Vision3 film on my medium format photography cameras. I shot the 250D and 500T rolls on my Mamiya RZ67 and Mamiya 7.
    So what is Kodak Vision3? Well as I said it is a motion picture film that uses a different development process than C41, which is used in cinema cameras. If you pick any Christopher Nolan or Quinten Tarantino film, a lot of them are shot on this type of film, so being able to use it in a photography format is quite interesting.
    So the film I shot had been repackaged using old backing paper and had been trimmed down to 61mm to fit in a medium format camera, allowing me to shoot 10 photos per roll. The photos are then developed in ECN-2 chemicals giving it a completely different look to most other film stocks.
    Now normally this is not super accessible in a photography format as it does require a more hands-on production and also different development chemicals, so it is hard to find commercially and most labs don’t process it.
    The only other film that I can compare it to, is Cinestill, however Cinestill still uses C41 development, so the process is a little different. I personally have never shot Cinestill, but the overall aesthetic is somewhat the same as it still is motion picture film however the remjet layer is removed on this film allowing for normal development.
    Vision3 does also come in a 35mm format, which is more traditional and commonly used, but as I mentioned, I was using the 61mm or medium format version.
    So I shot 2 rolls of Kodak Vision3, one being 250D, balanced for daylight, and the other being 500T, balanced for Tungsten Light. One on the Mamiya RZ67 and the other on the Mamiya 7.
    This film apparently has 15 stops of dynamic range which is similar to portra making it a very versatile film stock. So as you can see, these first few frames were of some older cars, and what really drew me in was the colors and overall location that they were parked in. I was going for these ¾ angles which ended up contrasting really nicely with blue sky creating a strong amount of vibrance in the photos.
    One thing you may have noticed about this film is the light leaks on the perforations which I really do enjoy. I’m not sure whether this is due to the film itself or more of a development thing, but either way, I feel they really add to the image especially when there are some warmer elements in the photo. This might not be for some people, but I personally like it. I’ve always been a fan of light leaks and artifacts in my photos as these things happen when shooting film, so you might as well embrace it.
    So all those photos were straight from the flextight scanner and I made no further adjustments in Lightroom or Photoshop, apart from a few dust cleanups. Like a lot of people, I get so sick of shooting Portra, so it was quite freeing being able to shoot something different and having no expectation of how it might turn out.
    So that was the 250D and 500T rolls of Kodak Vision3 and I’m sure you can see the difference between the 2. In my personal opinion, I think I actually prefer the colors on the 250D roll, maybe because the lighting and overall compositions were better, but the 500T still does an amazing job.
    I definitely plan on shooting loads more of this film in the future, and can hopefully, go to some cooler locations. It would also be cool to plan a shoot, somewhat Gregory Crewdson style, and even test the portrait capabilities. So keep an eye out for those videos over the next few months.
    Thanks to B2 Scan and darkroom for letting me shoot these rolls and taking care of the development and processing.
    B2 Scan is a Melbourne-based business providing flex tight scanning services and are about to venture out into the darkroom world. You find their information here:

      Thanks so much Renata! Yeah I definitely agree haha, everything was just working well during that time, the other roll not so much. The dynamic range is crazy, was expecting most of them to be unusable, so very pleased. Cheers!

    Great vid. I loved the city shot at 0:33. I noticed the light leaks and wondered if they were intentional or organic. They definitely give the photos a vintage feel, especially with the cars you chose.

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 роки тому

      Thanks Christopher! They were purely organic haha but I am really glad they showed up. It only happened on the first roll, so could be a camera issue. Going to test this film again soon, so will see if it happens again. Cheers!

    Wow I have never heard of the Kodak Vision3 but now I am a super excited to try them at some point in my medium format journey :) I really enjoyed the easy going form you approached on photographing with the film. My favorite image is definitely the image with the skyline in the background, lovely layering

      Thanks Nicole! It's pretty underrated in a photography format which is unusual because it's such good quality. I hope it becomes more accessible in the future though, I'm sure a lot of people would love using it. There might also be more available in 35mm so could be worth looking into? Ah thank you, glad you liked my approach, I really appreciate it! Thanks so much for watching :)

    Hey Ben. Cool photos. Definitely a vintage feel which is really neat. Maybe you said and I missed it but are these negative films? If so, did the people who scanned them do the color correction or did you have to do that?

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 роки тому +1

      Hey thanks Scott! They are negative films, however they use a different development process to C41, E6 and black and white. I did all the colour correction myself using the scanning software (flexcolor +3F), but my friend at the lab did the actual scanning. Thanks so much for watching Scott, I really appreciate it. Cheers!

    • @bendroege
      @bendroege  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much Lew! Honestly man it’s all just lighting, and the time of day. I’ll make a more in depth video on this soon, but lighting will make or break a photo before anything else I’d say. Things like composition, subject matter are important too, but without good lighting nothing will looks as nice. Cheers!

    • @bendroege
