Most Rush fans my age (57) consider Rush's earlier work ('76ish-'81ish) to be the music that defined them.

I would argue that "relevant" would imply that "radio" has the same status today that it did in 1980....I beg to differ (but that doesn't make the song less...it's awesome).
Yep. I always consider this album part of their 70s genre although it was released in January 1980. Moving Pictures was the bridge to the synth start of Signals. This is my favorite album by them.

Rush has always sounded more like 70s classic rock to me than 90s music.

They are reflecting on radio - all the changes you hear are like when you turn the dial and hear different music genres. Their video for this is perfection.
Rush marked the end of mainstream progressive rock (of the bands you heard on classic rock radio), not the beginnings of it. The early prog bands were British bands like Yes, ELP, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd, etc. Rush took the baton from them.
Im not a RUSH fan - but I think their fans would state this is mainstream RUSH - and you should try to go back the original beginnings of them - where you will see immense experimentation - where many bands of today and past acknowledge as great and so influential.
Something else really cool about Rush: they are all huge fans of baseball. There is a Geddy Lee exhibit in the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City because Geddy had the opportunity to purchase over 400 autographed baseballs from Negro League players. He bought the collection and donated it to the museum. Geddy also owns a baseball that is signed by every modern day MLB player with 3,000 hits or more. There's a cool video of Geddy walking up to Albert Pujols and asking him to sign the baseball after Pujols got his 3,000th hit. You will often see Geddy sitting behind home plate at Toronto Blue Jays games.

I love the way this song really sounds like dialing through an analog car radio. This is from my favorite Rush album Permanent Waves.
The thing about RUSH that always stood out to me was that the drummer was the lyricist.
The peak of their career was about 1976 to 2015. But yeah, their biggest albums were early 80's, Moving Pictures 1981 is their most famous one. Once they gained that permanent loyal fanbase in the 70's it never went away, and just kept growing really.
Rush peak was the whole time they played. Best live band ever.

This song was written in honor of a radio station in Toronto CFNY 102.1 which went by "The Spirit Of Radio" in the 80's. The best radio experience ever.

Rush are music geeks making music for other music geeks.
You can hear them elaborate on the reggae aspect when you watch the live version of the same song.
If you look further into this song, you'll see it is all about the radio airwaves and music industry. The change up from arena rock to reggae and other changes throughout the song were meant to be like someone going from radio station to radio station. If you watch the official video for the song, you'll see an image of Marconi, one of the radio inventors, along with images of some of the DJs from the radio station in Canada the band listened to. The Spirit of radio and Tom Sawyer were the two songs that Rush played during their 2013 induction into the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame, and one of my favorites used as an encore when I saw them in concert…
Rush was influenced by Yes not the other way around, I think it was Geddy Lee who said that there would be no Rush if it weren't for Yes.
The 90's brought drum machines, and click tracks, and digital mastering as a standard, Neil set the standard for drum machines.

Rush was hitting their stride in late 70's - early 80's. IMO their best work was the farewell to kings , moving pictures , signals era.

Even though their sound changed through the years, they are considered one of the Godfathers of progressive metal. The album 2112 is considered the birth of progressive metal. Rush took the progressive element of Yes, Jethro Tull and Genesis, and mixed it with the hard edge of Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and the Who and created a genre progressive metal.

First big album that got airplay. The next album Moving Pictures (1982?) was even bigger and the band was at their peak.

Rush is a Canadian Band that began in about 1970 or 71. Basically, a Band of the 70s and early 80s at their prime, although they toured into the early 2000s and drew huge crowds, even as their careers as a Rock Band began to come to a close.

I can't think of a 90s band that could hold a candle to this band. The late 60s and 70s produced the great bands .
Rush had their first progressive rock album called fly by night, and also when Neil Peart join them in 1975… so guys you were surprised to hear that Spirit of radio came out in 1980 yet they were doing progressive rock in 1975

While King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull and Genesis set the Progressive standards of rock fused with classical, folk, and Jazz, Rush was the band that drew in more heavy metal flavors and paved the way for 21st century progressive metal like later King Crimson, Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson.
The drummer and bass player were locked in...always. They did set the standard, along with rhythm sections from Yes, Zeppelin, and even Queen.
Vital signs by Rush off of Moving pictures album has a huge reggae vibe ….and the song Digital man has a ska feel to it….Neil was a huge Police fan…
I see a few people recommending Moving Pictures, which is a fine choice being their most successful record and loaded with hits but for my money it's Permanent Waves, the album just before that and where this song is from and includes Free Will, Natural Science and Jacobs Ladder and has become my favorite over the years but you really can't go wrong with any of their records. 😊

I've never heard anyone compare Rush to grunge music before, loved the connection. I listened to some Nirvana after the video and heard some parallels in the way they both switch up the reverb and distortion on the bass and guitar throughout a song.

This was a really big hit for Rush. It felt so shiny and happy, maybe a little too sweet and clean. But even this song would be a whole career for any other band. I still think Caress of Steel is underrated. Just wait until you pop open La Villa Strangiato.

This is much more relevant when it came out as most people's first listen to a group is by radio, or to the venturist going to a record store. Long before the concept of the internet. Now we can instantly listen to almost any music.

All the different music styles in this song are a reflection of the different music stations and what is played on them.
2112 is an excellent choice! Rush had a number of peaks in their career. When you come to do 2112 please do the lyric or comic book version to catch the story line. Both Led Zeppelin and Yes were big influences on Rush. You can hear the Zeppelin influence in their earlier work. They then developed their own unique sound which became an influence to many other bands.
