this was a complete departure from the free skate she produced a year ago, transforming the free into a forum for artistry and performance. love it. out of context, its just art.
The slow section is clearly copied from the free programme of Claudia Villiger (1986-1987 season), with an extremely similar step sequence and the pull-up camel spin at exactly the same point in the music. I wonder whether it was Katarina's, Frau Muller's or someone else's idea to model Kati's programme on it!
Her arsenal of triple jumps is limited mostly to the triple toe loop, the one jump she lands with consistency. To think she won two Olympic Gold medals with only a triple toe loop shows how technically limited she was.
I have to agree to an extent, though she had the Salchow as well. She had a triple loop that she was very inconsistent with, the last time she hit it before her 1988 retirement was in 1987 Worlds. Although I am mesmerized by her artistry and presentation, I did miss her 1984 long program jumps. Back then, she opened with a double lutz + triple toe, still not the most difficult, but more difficult than her triple toe + double toe, she also had a double flip (triple flip in 1982). Had she kept her double lutz + triple toe in her Carmen program, it would’ve added more variety in her jumps, even if it’s just doubles
山中有紀 - Kati has never landed or attempting a triple loop (in competition) but once in her life, and that was in the LP at 1987 Worlds. I was at those worlds and attended an open practice. During the open session, There is a group warm-up session, followed by each skater going through her program. While other skaters’ were doing that and their music was playing, Kati, rather than staying off to the sides, she would make up choreography and skate to their music. At one point, she fell flat and hard trying to land a triple loop. Her etiquette was viewed as trying to be intimidating and rude.
That’s definitely not true. She had an attempt of the triple loop at the European Championships in 1983 and she landed a clean tripple loop at the German championships in 1987.
Front-loaded with content. And for almost 1 minute and 40 seconds out of this 4 minute program, from 1:20 to 3:57, it's slow and "looking pretty", with no difficult jumps or difficult spins. The judges got taken in by her beauty and sultriness, and ignored the components of speed and ice coverage which are an integral part of the artistic score. I've always maintained, that if she were a plain looking girl instead of "Brooke Shields on ice" as some called her in the 80's, she'd not have gotten the 5.9s and 6.0s every time she simply skated clean programs.
+Matt G. Come on, U try to fight a war which was lost 25 years before. Could U agree, that there MUST be reasons, that she is still so famous anymore? She brought attantion to figure skating to people, which never before or after was interested in this sport. There were a lot of beauties in ladies figure skating, but they are forgotten.
to Matt G. haven't you ever heard about choreography + music + arrangement to ice? skater has to done it, like they plan to do it. and do you really think so, that her beauty gave her gold? i really don't think so and neither should you. you have right to your opinion. btw, this is somehow - i think - different to what she perform in calgary.
@eren mori what you mean by that last sentence? she was and is a true beauty, even today. btw, she was already a star, to win olympics 2nd time, make her a living legend. she flirt with audience, but it was her way to skate and perform and to interprete music. most of all, audience still like her and never have forgotten her, not even before or after lillehammer 94. she is still one and only queen of ice. simply unforgettable.
That is why "the competitors perform two programs: the short program, in which they complete a set of required elements consisting of jumps, spins and steps; and the free skate, also known as the long program, in which they have a slightly wider choice of elements", in other words - do or don't what ever you like. In other words, the "best jumper is not always placed first if the judges consider the difference in jumping execution to be outweighed by another skater's speed, spins, presentation, etc" - straight from Wikipedia.
Unglaublich, wie sie ganz mit der Musik verschmilzt! Was für eine Show!

I wish she had went for the 3loop here. She wasn't going to lose the European title if she had attempted the loop and fell.
Does anyone know where I can get the exact version of this song? I know it's Carmen opera but I cannot find this version anywhere...
You have to look for Shchedrins's "Bizet: Carmen Suite".
Thank You!!

Až budete na třetí olympiádě s otejpovanym kolenem tak budete rád, že něco skocite.
At the middle part,Did she jump 'triple' loop?
I can't be sure that was double or triple.
Someone could you tell me please?
Looks like a double loop.
