Me, absolutely celebrating that mine at least looks at me and pretends to consider listening after 9 years. We named him Echo for a reason...when you tell him to do something all you get is your own voice echoing back at you.
They’re very intelligent, and very trainable but they will push the boundaries at every opportunity. We put a piece of tape down to keep them out of the kitchen and over the course of a month they realized they could have one front paw, or half the back leg and tail, and ears but not nose over the line. The nose could be on the line but if it was over they’d get yelled at. They tested every permutation and my husband and I had to come up with exact rules around it.

My Dad has a Basset Hound. he's 9 years old and I can confirm just about everything that's been said in this video. He's lazy, but he is so loyal to the point where he fill follow you around no matter where you go. he loves any attention he gets and can never get enough of it. the moment you stop petting him, he will try to put your hand back on his head again, its the cutest thing ever. Here's to hoping he lives past 10!
You are spitting facts. Mine was smart and stubborn. He always got away with murder because he was really good at ignoring me. He was also good at looking pathetic so you would want to do everything for him. He usually won. Plus he was really heavy and hard to push around. I miss him so much.
When they asked to shake hands, the basset hound was like “nah I’m good” but the other dog was like “LOOK AT ME I CAN DO IT! LOOK HOW GOOD I CAN DO IT TOO! SEE?! SEE?! WHY AREN’T YOU LOOKING AT MEEEE?!!!!”
I just had to say goodbye to my 15 y.o. basset earlier this year; she was definitely stubborn, but was the sweetest, most caring dog I've ever known. Made me a basset lover for life.
In this breeds later years, they are susceptible to back issues due to how long their spine is. Ours had a spinal collapse and we had to let him go, but he made it to 13 years. This breed also has one of the best noses. Keep them occupied or they will follow their nose anywhere.
@@joshuamast5128 oh gosh! Our basset would escape the backyard and follow their nose to cookouts and stalk the neighbors around looking for food. They are very mischievous but so funny
Even dachshunds seem to be better and healthier choice than basset hounds, especially minidachshunds since they usually have shorter back than average dachshund and some have longer and thinner legs. I have heard that basset hounds can also develop eye infections more easily bc of their droopy eyes.
I've no ever known a Bassett Hound owner that wasn't "in total love" with their dog. All I saw was a blob always lying around, barely moving. But she saw a whole dog and loved it dearly.

My best friend in the 1980's had a purebred Basset Hound. He was such a small, awwdorable puppy bought from a reputable breeder. By the time he was one year old, he was over 200 lbs!😳 He wasn't obese or overweight at all. The vet said that possibly a recessive gene from generations ago was likely to be the cause of his gigantic size. None of the dog's siblings had gotten so large and the breeder was stunned. The hound was great with her small children, and loved to give them - one at a time - piggyback rides. I've never seen a huge Basset Hound again.
I have a hound mix with ridgeback and Great Dane and this describes him soooo good!!! Loyal, loving , has great smell, lazy , laid back, determined , and stubborn . He’s amazing though a 100 💯 % recommended this breed !!!
You forgot to mention 1 problem with having them in an apartment, the noise levels. They have an echoing, ear drum shatter 'bay', they actually make very good alarm dogs due to their sense of smell and how alarming the noise they make is. It's kind of shocking how such a big sound can come out of suck a short and stocky dog if you've never been around them before.

Lol we we're blessed to have a male Basset Hound for 7 years. He seldom barked outside unless he saw something, never from boredom or just to hear himself howl. He had two gears, one was to lazily hang out with you and his other gear was to walk for hours until you were the one begging to go home to rest hahaha. The only time he acted like the stereotypical Basset Hound was when we were inside and everybody was chilling out. Yes they are very stubborn dogs but once you teach them something they never forget
I just love my bassie hound dog , he is only 4 months old and we are still trying to train him to go outside to use the bathroom. He is starting to learn to go to the door and let us know when he needs to go .
Over 40 years ago ,wheny husband and I started living together we had a small trailer in a trailer park in S.Fla.abput 4 trailers up,some friends had a female greyhound the adopted ,and on the next street over, there lived about 3 pr 4 young guys in the Air Force sharing a trailer. One of them owned a very large wonderful Bassett hound named "Doobie".Doobie was SO smart and his ears nearly dragged the floor. The coolest thing about Doobie ( my husband knew the owner and told me this!) was that the guy liked to kinda drink a few beers and fall asleep laying on the couch,so he taught Doobie, that if he would fall asleep and drop his cigarette onto the floor- fo Doobie to go over and scratch it out! I'm not sure if he encouraged a natural thing he already did but that was pretty incredible in itself. But THEN I found out that the great puppy my husband had when I moved in with him was Doobies son! His name was Zeigfrey, and I was further blown away to find out that Doobie's "wife" was the rescued female greyhound just up the street from us! She was ALL legs and stood far from the ground, was streamlined and had once been a racing dog at the Greyhound track in Miami. But Doobie stood on 4 legs barely 8 " high! As if the logistics of that relationship and parenthood aren't mind boggling enough....One day we were out in the yard planting a few things and Doobie came down the street ,stopped at the gate of his "wife's " house, stood there a few and I could see the two of them sharing kisses and tail wags before head ended up at our place, where he saw his son ,Zeigfrey, laying in the yard.He came and laid down with him in the shade and visited with him for about 30 minutes. They traded nose nudges and puppy was truly excited to see his father! And it was wonderful to see a dog who KNEW,recognized and spent time with what he actually just wanted to do to be with his own wife and son! Doobie and Angel went on to have several more litters together and Zeigfrey always was so happy to see his dad,as was he! What a remarkable and great dog he was! And Zeigfrey too!
They are also VERY vocal, they have a voice louder than a Husky, it will surprise you how loud they can talk. Aside from that, they can easily be a lovable best friend 🖤
I love these dogs. I met my first one on a Kentucky farm, where my mom went to see an old friend, many years ago. I saw sitting on the front porch and this adorable Basset Hound waddled up to me and jumped into my lap. I've adored these dogs ever since.
As soon as my company lets us bring pets in the truck I’m getting a basset hound to ride passenger in mine. That would be so amazing to have on the road with me.
I'm an old man now, but when I was around six or seven years old, my family had a Basset Hound. We loved her and she loved us. She was extremely gentle and loved it when the neighborhood kids came around and gave her pets. Then, one day, my younger brother and I were sitting on the front porch with our dog and the mailman came up the walk. He delivered our mail and, as he turned to leave, patted my brother on the head. Samantha tore him up! We didn't get into any trouble and no one tried to put her down, but it was the most unexpected thing to have happened. So, not only are Bassets good companion animals, they will protect your children, too. Lesson learned.
Omg thank you 😍 I love my beautiful, stubborn girls so much. They most definitely are not lazy, but one of mine is definitely more active with zoomies then the other, not to mention, they have two very different personalities. If you decide to get a basset hound you'll never know what your going to get and its one of the charms of them 🙂.
got a basset puppy in march, she was born in mid december. it is now almost september and she has done thousands worth of damage to our house and has caused my nose to bleed multiple times from jumping on me. she's eaten things she shouldnt have and had to be taken to the vet multiple times. she howls half the night and despite professional, specialized training and a lot of effort, the only command she knows even half way decent is sit, and if she does not receive a treat immediately after sitting, she will howl and bark and jump until you finally reward her. All this being said, and even though she is a massive pain, she's still my best friend and I wouldn't trade her for anything
As a puppy we go “awwwwww how cute with his floppy Ears let go and play” After grow up “yeah I know that feeling buddy” set an on the couch watching tv
They’re also super stubborn. That being said my basset was one of the best and sweetest dogs I ever had. He also wasn’t lazy at all, he loved to follow his nose.
I have a 1 year Bassett named Charlie. Best dog I've ever had. He sheds worse than a husky, stubborn as a mule, slobbers on everything, constantly cleaning his ears and his barking and howling can be heard 4 blocks over. He's extremely intelligent, loves to play fetch and is a super tracker. These dogs are also very strong and likes to play ruff. I wouldn't recommend them as an inside dog especially if you are a clean person and keep a clean house. I take mine to work everyday and he is great with all people, also very loyal
It cannot be overstated how stubborn they are lol. We have two, and sometimes it feels like it would be easier to move a house by hand than get them to do something. Great personalities though, and incredibly loyal.
I have a basset hound and pitbull mix.He is very energetic and vocal. He howls and bays and is nosey. He investigates everything and gets on everyone's nerves. We love him, dearly.
We had two when I was a kid. They played tag in the backyard. Too funny. One in front one chasing. Tag the butt of the lead dog turn around and chase the other one.
They are not really suitable for small homes as the video suggests because they are not small dogs. They are medium sized dogs with short legs so people judge them to be small dogs. I had a male basset who was over 53lbs at his heaviest and he was not particularly large or overweight for his breed. They would do well in a home with a yard and daily walks. Being in apartments and condos might be a challenge as they have very loud barks.
I had a Flash as well! He was handsome basset we rescued from the local Humane Society. He was such a character & a love. Will miss him always (he passed in 2006) ♥️🐾🌈🦴
Here’s some tips if you want one: 1:don’t rub there ears too much(they could get infected) 2:don’t wash them too much(there fur could dry out 3:be kind to them(don’t get all up in there space
Got my first Bassett a year ago as a puppy. He has been wide open and very energetic for almost the whole first year. And now he’s start to get very lazy. They are great dogs!
Definitely would like to have one of these hounds. I grew up around Hound dogs and i can easily handle my grandma's beagle. He has the tendency to hang himself, bark a lot but has taken a shine to indoor living and all it's benefits
I had a basset hound 2 years again. She passed away unfortunately but she was the best dog ever. I honestly suggest you get this breed, they are so loveable.
My childhood basset was called Humphrey. He was an absolute gem. Watched over me when I was a baby and let me play with him when I was an infant. He lived to 13. Such a kind, relaxed and loving boy. I miss him very much ❤
I had a beagle basset mix for 13 years. My wife and I had to put him down a couple of days ago. I have to say he was the best dog I could have ever asked for. Him not physically being here has completely gutted us. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for both the Beagle and Basset breeds.
So true…I’ve been so lucky to share my life with several Bassets and they are all you say and much more. They are the perfect laid back and stubborn breed. 💕🐶💕
Best dog I ever had. Was like living with an actual cartoon character. They love walks and play. But want nothing more in life than to chill with you. Never barked. Was never hostile to anybody. But man. They shed like crazy. And drip everywhere after taking a drink of water.

Bassets aren't lazy. They're just very careful about expending energy.
"Stubborn, Determined, Lazy" Say basically as s Dachshund owner it won't be anything new 😂
Also, beagles
They are so cute and pretty
My recommendation, get insurance before their first ear infection, clean ears regularly and Scotchgard your carpet.
What’s the “scotchgard your carpet” part about?
@@yogijager they drool, a lot. The term I heard once to describe it best was "leak".
They have leaky mouths.
They’re also super stubborn. That being said my basset was one of the best and sweetest dogs I ever had. He also wasn’t lazy at all, he loved to follow his nose.
also sound proof your home to spare the neighbors ears lol
Drool drool drool@@yogijager
When you breed a dog specifically for hunting but it ends up being lazier than your southern uncle when NASCAR is on tv.
They're also really loud!
All the better for letting you know of people you don’t want around, eh? A loud dog, barking.
“Good for apartments”
I had a beagle/basket hound (not sure) and when he barked he sounded like he was dying lol
It cannot be overstated how stubborn they are lol. We have two, and sometimes it feels like it would be easier to move a house by hand than get them to do something. Great personalities though, and incredibly loyal.
They are great dogs but just know they are messy af. They shed constantly and drool worse than a mastiff.
They are hyper as fuck idk what he's talking about
They will also attempt to eat anything they can get those big floppy lips around.....ANYTHING
There are so freaking cute 🥰 ❤😊😂
Omg we had one when i was a kid. His name was Elvis
mines a basador. mix of white labby and basset hound. hes a whole celebrity lmao
I used to own a basset hound named Flash (He died a few years ago. R.I.P) and he would follow us everywhere, so we didn’t need to worry about a leash
mine is named flash too lol
I had a Flash as well! He was handsome basset we rescued from the local Humane Society. He was such a character & a love. Will miss him always (he passed in 2006) ♥️🐾🌈🦴

from a prior basset hound owner: i’m surprised you didn’t mention their smell. these dogs are STINKY and it’s nigh impossible to wash out LMAO
They are the sweetest dogs. Perfect for children who pull their ears. Nothing phases the sweet-natured basset.
I had a basset hound not that long ago and she was very loving and always excited to see me. I’m only a teen but I would highly recommend getting one.
Those big beautiful ears!!!! ❤️
I had mine for 15 years.
She was wonderful.
Fred was love of our life. The unconditional love.....hungry boy and he heard but did it his way. Lord we miss him sooo much. Completed us.
🎶You ain't nothing but a hound dog, crying all the time....
We had one till her back went out at the age of 12. She was an awesome bed cuddler, and critter finder. Still miss her.
Just got a little basset hound puppy and while she loves to bite…a lot! This girl has also made this Christmas most memorable.
Here’s some tips if you want one:
1:don’t rub there ears too much(they could get infected)
2:don’t wash them too much(there fur could dry out
3:be kind to them(don’t get all up in there space
Got my first Bassett a year ago as a puppy. He has been wide open and very energetic for almost the whole first year. And now he’s start to get very lazy. They are great dogs!
When I was a child, we had a basset hound. The dog was so nice and patient with us kids.
anyone who ever said basset hounds are lazy never owned one.
OK, they’re really cute and people do everything for them and I own one. She is the cutest thing ever.
Definitely would like to have one of these hounds. I grew up around Hound dogs and i can easily handle my grandma's beagle.
He has the tendency to hang himself, bark a lot but has taken a shine to indoor living and all it's benefits
Adorable 😂😂❤️
I miss my Basset hound every day. But then again, dogs in general are amazing and they enhance a human life 100%.
Every dog make great companions and loyal and loving
These are the cutest most bestest floof. They are the best listeners and they like most dogs have the best personalities. Love them!
I have a Bassett Hound/Pit mix and he is the cutest dog ever! His body is just adorable!
I had a basset hound 2 years again. She passed away unfortunately but she was the best dog ever. I honestly suggest you get this breed, they are so loveable.
i love how they look just as goofy full grown as they do when they're puppies, they're so cute 🥺
My childhood basset was called Humphrey. He was an absolute gem. Watched over me when I was a baby and let me play with him when I was an infant. He lived to 13. Such a kind, relaxed and loving boy. I miss him very much ❤
The amount of attitude and judgement from a basset is unmatched
I had a beagle basset mix for 13 years. My wife and I had to put him down a couple of days ago. I have to say he was the best dog I could have ever asked for. Him not physically being here has completely gutted us. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for both the Beagle and Basset breeds.
So true…I’ve been so lucky to share my life with several Bassets and they are all you say and much more. They are the perfect laid back and stubborn breed. 💕🐶💕
That’s a cute basset hound😊
When I was little. My grandparents had a basset. She was sweet. I miss you Lady!😭
Why are we leaving out the howling and the digging? They’re awesome and adorable but they hell and they dig for days
They will also knock beers out of your hand and drink the whole thing if they can. Don't leave an alcoholic drink on the table if you leave the room!
They’re so adorable!
Best dog I ever had. Was like living with an actual cartoon character. They love walks and play. But want nothing more in life than to chill with you. Never barked. Was never hostile to anybody. But man. They shed like crazy. And drip everywhere after taking a drink of water.
