- I spent most of 1994 & 1995 onboard this platform and had such a good time I bought the video.
Shows the Construction, operation and lifestyle onboard Piper Bravo and Saltire Alpha in the North Sea - Offshore Aberdeen Scotland.
Found it in my loft and thought it was worth converting and uploading. - Наука та технологія
Was working offshore at the time this was brought out, to watch it being lifted and put into place was jaw dropping, later on mid 90’s I ended up working on piper b, you can see where piper alpha stood there is or was a marker buoy secured to it and the marker had a cross situated on the top, it made me think about that night very upsetting to know that most of the crew stayed in the galley and ended up at the bottom of the North Sea a dear price to pay for oil.
Always sent a shiver down my spine standing on the north deck watching that buoy at night flashing in the darkness. A lot of the shift that were on leave when it happened worked on Piper B. The attitude was if we are not getting oil out the ground what else are we going to do. It was true as I spent 2 years almost constantly out there before I met my wife and I couldn't think what else I could do either. Was good times even if it did get dangerous sometimes.

I am amazed at how many people have watched this, I never expected so much interest in the VHS tape I bought when I worked out there then converted onto UA-cam for something to do one night a few years ago. It is always interesting to get the background stories of others that were involved with the platform.
What a relief to learn about a positive Piper rig!
It’s hard to not think about the rib Piper Bravo replaced though, Always Important to learn from our mistakes
This video saved my ass for a homework on offshore engineering. Is not easy to find info on Piper's Bravo construction process. Thanks a lot.

I was the consortium's photographer. Was on the jacket installation barge, clambered aboard overnight. the jacket was pushed off next morning Was supposed to be at 1030 hr but was pushed to 0730. Thick fog no light. Had to use a roll of 120 B/W pushed to 1200 asa to capture it. The jacket was pushed off by a single ram and it caught port side just momentarily, a slight lurch. Was also in the crane cab as the topsides were lifted on
I got sent to Piper Bravo 9 years ago for one trip and have been there ever since.

I was Medic on Port Royal for the duration of the hookup then transferred to Safe Lancia for Saltire hook up. I ended up on Saltire for a while too. Great projects. Very busy with amazing people and a reverence was very much felt every day from what had happened before.
Really interesting and well-made video. Even if I don't work within this industry this was a great watch.
I know John L's comments were made 2 years ago, but lets not forget the reason Piper Bravo exists (it replaced Piper Alpha). Also lets not forget that the rules regarding offshore platforms in the UK are the strictest in the world (also because of Piper Alpha). I suspect those safety features were the state of the art then and are re-visited regularly.
I worked on Piper Alpha and Claymore Alpha '80 to '81 thank God I wasn't offshore when it blew. Still think of the lads who never made it.

Had tears in my eyes watching this again 45 Years after the Tow-Out in 1978- as so many of those seen have since passed away. Just had the news that all 3 platforms will be removed from the face of the earth by 2028. Don’t know how the 600,000 Ton Central will be moved as it is a rather unique design. My experience as a contract computer field engineer started in the late 70’s and progressed through 6 job changes and as many ownerships from Chevron to Kerr-McGee, Canadian Natural Resources, Oryx Energy , Maersk etc . More than just 3 Platforms - The giant Central collected Pipelines from Ninian Northern (24" oil pipeline); Ninian Southern (24" oil pipeline); Strathspey (8" and 10" oil pipelines); Heather (16" oil pipeline); Magnus (24" oil pipeline); Alwyn (12" oil pipeline);Lyell (12" and 8" oil pipeline). This allowed over 300,000 Barrels a day to flow to the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal. The Crew had to be a mixed-bag as the film states, as we have to take care of every eventuality. Chevron loved ex-forces personnel who came as ready-made fire-fighters, medics, emergency response, air-crew, mechanics - and ICI & Mining Techs that were qualified in electrical safety in explosive atmospheres. Aside from the obvious hazards of gas and oil, we compressed gas to 300 Bar to export LPG, injected water to reservoir at 250 Bar, produced electricity at 11,000 Volts; handled explosives for well perforations and radioactivity for survey and inspection work .
Whoever is your personal ‘supreme being’- who created the Earth - they certainly didn’t make it easy to find where they had hidden this treasure. 100 Miles out to sea, 500 feet of water and then 10,000 feet underground between faults and fractures - but we found it and delivered it.
Proud to have been a small part of it, but equally glad that the World has moved on to more renewable energy. Remember, however, that over the half the hydrocarbons in each discovery are still down there , as the expense of recovering the rest does not justify the efforts.
Crew members of the Ninian Field are still in touch socially , although some of us are getting rather old now.
I worked for John Crane Mechanical Seals/Elf Enterprise and it was my job to keep the mechanical seals on the pumps going night and day. I enjoyed working out there for a few years after hook up, there was always something happening. Glad you enjoyed the video John.
I watched this one after the piper alpha documentary. was very sobering hearing them talk about the features I just saw epically fail. and knowing they were partially responsible
Everyone seems to like Piper B, best platform I ever worked on. Even today it still seems to be a happy place, have a look at Piper B Rockstars Video, it is brilliant.

I admire any guy that chanced his arm and took a risk working in the oil fields. Its well paid. But its also shift work for weeks at a time hundreds of miles from home.

You need to have a skill that is essential offshore; my skill is Mechanical Seals for pumps and when required I am in high demand because when a pump leaks it is a health, safety and environmental hazard so there is a good reason for flying me out to solve the problem.You should study a trade that is required offshore then apply to companies in the industry that can utilise your skills.
Get a trade firstly, then keep phoning the companies everyday, you will get a trip eventually mate.

Was there any of survivors of alpha on the bravo rig ?
Not that I know of but many that worked on the shift that was off on leave when the disaster happened worked on Piper B when I was there

The OIM on Saltire was a Piper survivor. Saltire was the best platform I worked on.

Yes this was built to replace Piper Alpha. At night standing on the north deck you can see the wreck buoy's light flashing in the distance marking where the alpha was. Sends a shiver down my spine.

Must have been tough times for you Dermot, were you on the shift that was on leave when disaster struck? A lot of the guys on Bravo were the leave shift from Alpha when I was there.
