I was heading to Goodwill last week when I stopped and asked myself, "do I need to bring anything into our apartment?" The answer was no, so I skipped it. Yay for small victories. 💕hope you & Paul stay healthy and well.😁

It’s so funny you should say that, I was cleaning and going through things the other day. Asking myself what to toss, and a friend of mine said, if you can get it at goodwill when you need it, toss it. No sense holding onto something you may only use once. Storing things is wasteful.

At this very moment my husband has put on his coat and rushed to our garage to see if he can find our car battery. He is a General Motors retiree and was dumbstruck when he watched this. Who checks out the location of a car battery when they buy a car. Wow! Never thought to save those butter containers or to make my broth in the crock pot. Learned something from each subject presented. My definition of being wealthy is having enough savings to pay for all those unexpected expenses. Doesn't pay to live like 5 cent millionaires.

In order to remove bones from broth easily, I put them into a large mesh pull string bag and knot the top (the ones you can buy at supermarkets for buying and storing veggies are ideal). And, rather than putting spices and herbs that have to be removed before eating I also add them to the bag too. That way I’m not having to hunt for them at the end of cooking. The bag is then rinsed and put into the laundry for next time. I do the same when mulling wine, it saves so much time.

I halved the granola recipe and used 3/4 cup of maple syrup. It took an hour in my toaster oven. Easy and delicious. I added unsweetened coconut the last 15 minutes and raisins when it cooled off. I used my coffee grinder to grind up 1 cup of oats and I got the chunks. I won’t be buying granola anymore. This is a real money saver. I paid $5.99 on sale for an 11 ounce bag of granola. The fact I can make it in my toaster oven means I can even make it in the summertime.

I know this is long after you posted this video but I just wanted to share a recent experience with a dead car battery. I went to work one day, all was fine, but when I was going to head out the car would not start. AFter asking some friends there what they thought, they all said the battery but I do not have the skills to change it myself, so I figured I would need to get it towed somewhere to get changed. One of the gentlement who were helping me asked if I had AAA (which I did) and he said that they would come to me, bring a battery and change it for no labor costs. All I ended up paying was the price of the actual battery (just under $80), no labor and it has a three year warranty to replace at no cost if I call AA again. I had no idea that I had that coverage and was very happy someone was there who could educate me on this. That alone made itworth my yearly fee (over the years I have also used it a number of times to get towed, have a tire changed, etc.), for someone who does not have the car maintenace skills you have, it was worth the investment for me. .

Hi Emmy. I wanted to give you another frugal tip for making broth. When you clean carrots, celery and onions, garlic and herbs, put the skins, leaves etc in a bag in your freezer. When you have a full bag, throw them in crock pot w carcass. That way you don't have to throw away perfectly good veggies, you're throwing away scraps you were going to throw away anyway. Also, put in a table spoon or 2 or apple cider vinegar. It helps draw out the minerals from the bones.

Stay Well, Enjoy the cold, Speaking of Bloopers I had my own this week thanks to a little brain fog, I am teaching my best friend in Ohio, how to make bread, & pizza, she wanted to know which marinara sauce to buy, I said Victoria Marijuana sauce, I repeated it three times,
lol, did I remembered Marinara then I was trying to say bread flour and I was saying brown flour, this is new I have never had problems like this before, fortunately within a minute I had the words right King Arthur Brown Four it mad me crazy because I have never had memory issues ever. Fibromyalgia kicks once in a great while, but the whoe conversation was hilarious. Have a lovely weekend, what a strange place for a battery.

Hello Emmy and Paul!! Thanks for the prayers for the south! We were snowed/ iced in from early Monday
Through Saturday but, my husband Bobby went THURSDAY later during the day to work, it was still icy 🥶
Especially in the parking lot where he works, he went out to collect shopping 🛒 carts. He fell/ slipped on the ice in the parking lot, bruised his tailbone, and hit his head really hard on a rubber car bumper, thank God that was rubber and not chrome! He kept on working though, in a little pain.Friday he worked and after work he went to a cvs ( next door to where he works) got 3 boxes of cereal, 1-Jif pb, 1- strawberry jam and trail mix for $4.67 with digital coupons, and 1- $2 ECB. went to Kroger and no food! Went back Saturday after work, to Kroger still no food, we had Kroger coupons.(he worked Sunday too to make up a little if his time missed.)
It was ok because we had food at home. Ate meals on 3 lbs. of ground meat for 5 days. ( not complaining, I had meat in the freezer if I needed it)
My suv 🚙 didn’t crank the week before, on my way to get a mammogram, we used his car. Sunday he finally had time after work to go get a battery,
He stopped at Walmart for a battery, got one it was $105 before tax. The guy at the register told Bobby that he had gotten a battery for his car and it was the same as the $105 one for $54. Bobby said I’ll get that one then. Wow! What a God winks moment!! He bought it, paid $60.34 tax and all for the battery. Came home put it in with no trouble at ALL!
I cringed when I seen Paul saying he had to pay so much money for a battery, then Labor. I felt bad for Y’all. You know I do low/ no spend every month. Today my husband came home with 6 small bundles of
Fresh Flowers from valentines that his boss gave him, the roses were dead and most of the flowers but, I was able to get one bouquet 💐
Less the roses, it turned out so beautiful!! I was very happy, it brightened my day! Thank God we were without power for only a half day and we have a gas stove and a gas fireplace! 🔥 we had no running water for days though. We counted our blessing! God is So good!
My oldest son lives in Houston and he has a whole house generator so, things were good for him, my granddaughter and her 4 yr. old live in Dallas, it was bad for her with no power.

I’m glad you had the extra savings for an unexpected car repair. My husband does most of our car repairs and helps others, too. He had to remove a tire to replace his mother’s Chrysler 300 battery. Our daughter’s Chevy Malibu required removal of the front bumper to change the headlamp. While the bumper was off, he replaced all four headlamp bulbs (the low beams with extended life bulbs-not available for high beams). Less than a year later, a low beam bulb went out again. People should be able to do routine car maintenance without special tools. The cold really does a number on older batteries. 9.9K!!!

We roast whole chickens quite frequently and I always throw the carcass in the crockpot and make stock. My husband and I keep a sandwich bag in the freezer door that we add our veggie scraps to (carrot peels, mushroom stems, celery and onion tops). We always throw whatever is in the bag to our stock rather than cutting up fresh veggies.

I feel Paul's pain! After owning many old cars over the years, I've amassed a list of things to check physically before buying any vehicle anywhere. If they start with the sales pitch bologna, I say "pop the hood" and I start my checklist. They stop talking and I say "I'll call you when I'm finished". Cuts wasted time. CV joints are key on front-wheel drive cars. The four constant velocity joints are housed in accordion "boots" at four points below the engine. If not well-shielded from rocks kicking up, they're vulnerable and often split. It's expensive to replace the boot and lubricant if you catch it fast, but ruinously expensive if the joint(s) must also be replaced. Lesson hard learned with my only new car ever (a Subaru), and I ALWAYS check CV joints before buying now. I also check them regularly on my car to catch any tears and leaks FAST! Other things to check for: easy accessibility to change head/tail lights and signal indicator bulbs, easy access to change your own oil and filter, look for indications of rust and/or flooding both under the chassis and under floor mats inside car, accessibility to battery for charge/change/service, and a few others. Physically check all the wiper blades, filters, and the belts under the hood for pliability and appearance. Check all four tires and spare thoroughly and carefully. Determine where the spare, jack, and lug nut wrench are. Open the glove box and study the owner's manual. If you're researching a specific model, go online and check for reviews and ratings and entries on persistent problems with the model in advance. Cut the sales chatter and follow YOUR agenda to check out the car. I do basic maintenance, so I check accessibility to all the key areas I work with. For $100 a trusted mechanic friend will do a thorough analysis before I buy a used car. Be an informed buyer. Test drive the car thoroughly on different road types, the highway, gravel roads, in tight turns, up steep inclines, etc. Check blind spots, visibility for parking, and ease of parallel parking or backing into a space. Check A/C, heat, the sound system, defrost, etc. Put the car through its paces. If the dealer or individual selling won't let you do that, walk away. If you're selling a car, be willing to do the same and GO WITH the person while they test drive. I've learned all these lessons the hard way. On average I keep cars 7-10 years. With any car, you're only as good as your tires and brakes, so check both regularly. Next to your home, this will likely be your biggest life expense. Study carefully and well before buying. If possible, work with a credit union or your bank to see what they'd charge you if you need to finance the car in advance. Dealer financing is often padded with junk fees and too expensive. Also, check how much your car insurance would be with various models to compare. Best option is to save every month towards your next car and pay cash after you've found the perfect model for you. Sorry for the super long comment, but I hope these tips help you.

I had to laugh...I flipped your video on while I was in the middle of making homemade granola! AND..I made homemade broth yesterday (along with pans of chicken enchiladas with homemade hot sauce and enchilada sauce, 2 pans of double chocolate banana bread, a loaf of artisan bread and buttery potatoes for my daughter's 22 birthday...we met in the parking lot at her college due to covid, but I least I could see her eyes!) I add melted coconut oil to the granola (bit less than 1/4 cup, I buy it at costco in huge container because I also make homemade deodorant with it as well) and I swirl in a bit of wowbutter (it's soy butter, like peanut butter but it won't kill me..lol) I also mix in a bit of maple syrup (1/4 cup ) and 4 cups of oats. SO yummy!! i can't add nuts, but it's way lower in fat and sugar too than store bought. Thanks for all you guys do!!

I’ve seen recipes that use the liquid from chickpeas as the binder... I usually do half cup pure maple syrup, half cup olive oil...cookie and Kate blog has a great recipe.
For bfast, I use plain yogurt, add PLAIN dry oats, a bit of the homemade granola and to add a bit more sweetness I take a bag of frozen berries and boil it a bit with just a bit of water to make it like a compote. I keep this in the fridge and add to my yogurt. This adds sweetness without added sugar.

Many people do not believe in unexpected emergency purchases. It's like it will never happen to them. Also they mistake credit cards as being an Emergency Fund hence credit cards are used if necessary or use up beforehand payments coming in thus using up what you will need then. Until they see the worst in some cases and the no logic to all this, everyone else in the family will go off budget and program. I agree whole-heartedly with your method and it works.

Don't feel too bad, Paul, about the battery location. I would be one to do the same thing...usually the battery is quite visible under the hood. Definitely food for thought when buying a vehicle. And speaking of food, I like granola too so, Emmy, I will try your low-fat recipe. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm ready for Spring! This cold weather and snow can go any day. This must be the winter of the battery!!😂😂 I have a 2011 Honda CRV, and I had to buy a new battery at Christmas time!! You talk about poor timing!! FORTUNATELY, I have been putting money aside for exactly these kinds of emergencies, so even when i had to buy one at Christmas, i was able to comfortably do it. You’re so right, Emmy and Paul, having money saved up for these sudden emergencies is so worth doing it!! First, thank you for the heads up on the battery situation. I don’t think I’ve ever looked under my hood (I need a Paul in my life! 😉). I take my car in for servicing next month so I will have them show me where it is. I drive a hybrid so I have two batteries - one in the front and one in the back. I had a great chuckle during this video as my cat, who was cuddling with me while I was watching UA-cam, sat up when you started talking turkey. She stared at the screen while you were putting the turkey carcass into the pot. She only jumped down when you added the vegetables. 😂 She likes to be in the kitchen while I cook and keep me company (she takes a sniff of everything but will not eat human food). I can’t wait to try the granola recipe! This will be something for me to do with my grandsons, next time I watch them. Take care!

Thank you for your kind words, prayers and well wishes from Texas! The last few days have been admittedly a bit rough! No elec, no water but we are now getting back to a bit more normal. Inside of house was 38 degrees!
We also had a time with our battery in our 2016 Traverse. We found out it is in the back seat and under the floor board which you cannot open up and replace without a special tool and then has to be synced back up to the car's computer - a $300 expense for us - same as your experience.
    Shocker!
Love the granola cereal and looks delicious! Will make for us too. Curious as to what you spend a month on groceries. We have 2 people and I know we spend WAY too much... LOL.

I think the engineers who design vehicles should be forced to work on them in subzero weather and knee deep snow. Then they'd maybe do things a bit differently! I had a similar experience with my elderly BMW...no battery under the hood where it belonged. Something told me to look in the trunk and there it was, tucked into a recess with a plastic cover over it. Every fall it pays to take the time to have your battery tested and make sure the cables are in good condition and the posts nice and clean. Investing in a small battery jump pack that can be charged from a household outlet can save a service call...not to mention being able to jump your own car without the hassle of jumper cables and an additonal vehicle is very handy at times. The more people learn about doing basic car maintenance and repairs, the more money in their pocket instead of in a mechanic's.
