I am almost 80 years old and remember this show with fondness as a grade school kid with my beloved Aunt Tess . We watched Ed Sullivan faithfully. Different times and days when a kid and AUnt enjoyed TV together.
I am 52 1/2 and found one of the Great Ms.Sophie Tuckers' albums in a little thrift store! Loved it! Was about 18 then. My Grandparrents influenced me much...They were also two of my very best friends and I miss them still every day of my life!
Oh my, this is wonderful. I saw Sophie Tucker when I was 8 at The Royal Variety show. She was my Grandma's favourite. My Mother at 87 has Alzheimer's but when I put on I remember it well she could sing it word perfect. She remembers little now but the sight and sound of these two for a magical moment brought her back her life.
So wonderful to see these two charming scene stealers giving and taking from each other. Sophie lets Chevalier be the extrovert while she very wisely holds back. Wonderful chemistry.
It's wonderful when you see two really brilliant performers performing together. When it's the only time they appeared together, it's truly a special moment.
@@aileen9553 You my dear,do not have the charm,or wit of Ms. Sophie Tucker... I remember it well! Two immortal talents sharing a sweet duet. 💞 . At age 9, I requested and received a personally autographed photo from Sophie. Many years later, while ill, the photo disappeared. A couple of years later, it appeared on Ebay, in the original frame in my own city. Talk about miracles ✨. Of course I once again treasure it, until 🎵 Some of these days 🎶some people 🎵 MAY miss 🎶ME! 🎵
Just fantastic. The power of character and personality combine to make a stage presence that is beyond entertaining to watch. That goes for both of these wonderful performers.
This is why I like youtube! I never heard of Sophie Tucker even though I am no youngster myself! She could belt out the tunes! Reminds me of Adele these days! She was awesome!
Apart from the touching singers of a bygone era, please listen hard to the orchestra--jamming like nothing you've ever heard soon after 8:00. Turn up the volume, frighten your neighbors! It's incredibly thrilling! And Sullivan's initial reaction, smiling broadly, arms outstretched and shaking his head with awe and amazement--this is the music he grew up hearing with some added muscle! Compare to his stony-faced reaction to most acts.
Just wonderful from the old and much more Lovely days of old. Thanks for this so much!! I was 11 years old and my mother and I always watched Ed Sullivan!
When Ed Sullivan pays such accolades to his performers as to bring them back to have the audience, "bring the roof down...." you KNOW you have seen something VERY special!
A pair of entertainers the likes of which will never be seen again. Long lasting stars from vaudeville, movies, radio, TV. Fantastic that they are on tape. Classic.
What a Great War Hero this man was,, he fought for our freedom, served two years in a prison camp. He is one great hero and a wonderful person and wow what a great singer. Today your walking the golden streets with our lord.
Maurice Chevalier was a great talent, and this was one of his signature songs (arguably THE song of the later part of his career). It's always enjoyable to hear him sing it. It's just too bad Sophie Tucker didn't respect him, and the song, enough to bother to learn the lyrics to it.
I remember when i heard on the news Maurice had died. It made me so sad, i actually cried. My mom would sing Sophie's I'm the last of the red Hot Mommas. and some of her other songs.Talent like this is hard to find nowadays.
1958. I was born. Lest we remember. Lest we forget. Named after Maurice Chevalier. Let us not forget the Rythme of The Rain. Mimi....you good for nothing Mimi am I the guy.....?!!!
They cut a sequence of the song, so Sophie Tucker got the lyrics wrong. He says, "That brilliant sky.." She replies, "There was none that night..." when the line is, "We had rain." She took a line from the next stanza. Here are the correct lyrics: HONORE: We met at nine We met at eight HONOR?: I was on time No, you were late HONORE: Ah yes, I remember it well. We dined with friends We dined alone. HONORE: A tenor sang A baritone. It warms my heart To know that you Remember still The way you do HONORE: Ah yes, I remember it well. How often I've thought of that Friday-- Monday-- HONORE: Night, when we had our last rendezvous And somehow I foolishly wondered if you might By some chance be thinkin' of it too That carriage ride You walked me home HONORE: You lost a glove I lost a comb HONORE: Ah yes, I remember it well. ***That brilliant sky! ***We had some rain HONORE: ***Those Russian songs ***From sunny Spain? HONORE: Ah yes, I remember it well. You wore a gown of gold I was all in blue HONORE: Am I getting old? Oh no, not you! How strong you were How young and gay A prince of love In every way HONORE: Ah yes, I remember it well.

Sophie hold back? That must have been the only time. These two are among the all-time show-business greats.

This is called professionalism. No beating it!
Sat here with a silly grin on my face. Magical stuff from Maurice and Sophie
Simply charming.. Pure class from an era in entertainment we're not likely to see again. Loved it.

This is my 1st introduction to Sophie. But, Maurice I enjoyed from the 1st time I watched him perform: both his Voice & Charm!
Entertainment like this doesn't exist anymore.
You are so right as a very Young Man I loved him and his singing of Great Love songs. Much better times!
Your absolutely right. Today so called " talent" can't hold a candle to the stars of the past.
