I grew up in a farm and spent my childhood and teenage years helping around with the cattle and crop tending chores. One thing I noticed was every time we worked in the fields through a rainy day, I always came home hungrier than usual. It never failed, every time I got wet working outdoors I'd get so hungry even if I had a good lunch or breakfast. That same feeling comes to me now after a good swimming session so, I agree with the explanation on the effect of our body's temperature.
I'm the same way. Feel like I could eat a whole cow after swim workout. After stuffing my face, I feel bad realizing I just negated the calories I burned. Great tips!
Since I first watched this, I've been checking my temperature before and after. It drops 1/2 to 2 degrees F each swim. In July in south Texas! I don't feel cold. I now try to plan ahead and have a mug of hot tea to drink on the drive home from the pool. By the time I'm home, my temperature has gone back to normal. I'm curious what the drop would be on days when I actually feel chilled. Wish someone told me this 50 years ago.
Thank you for addressing this topic. I'm very new to swimming and found that I get hungrier after lifting weights than swimming, however, I've tried swimming in the AM with only my usual liquid fasting tonics then bring a high carb smoothie with me to the pool and I sip it every few sets (Almost breakfast). That way I don't end up getting really hungry until after I enjoy some time in the steam room. But thirty minutes after a swim I'm ready for a real meal. I say the steam room helps in that temp recovery very well.
Great piece, Heather. ALWAYS wondered why I couldn't stop snacking at EVERYTHING post swim but pre-dinner time at home on swim days! Thanks for an explanation. I do find if I eat something sensible post swim in the afternoon hours before dinner, I am less apt to snack on the garbage. A salad and a good sized apple, for example, can bridge me over to dinner without too much "caloric damage". It's peculiar, I can run a half marathon or bike 60 milers in training for an upcoming 70.3, but an hour straight swimming in the beginning of training for these races made me hungry enough to want to chew on my arm straight outta the pool...HA! Anyways, thanks for this and all the great pieces you guys create, I see them all! Take care, Daniel Connor Los Gatos, California
I’ve taken to meal preparation before swimming, making sure I have all the nutrients necessary and bulking out with extra protein sources. Fish, chicken etc. It stops me pigging out on carbs. I do eat carbs, just not the thing I bull my meal with. Also a pint of fresh fruit smoothie in the morning really helps with the sugar cravings.
My personal favorite is to take a small thermos bottle, not tea or coffee, but an oxo cube dissolved in hot water. Sounds weird, but because of the taste, it makes me feel like I've had something to eat, even though it's just a drink (or at best a VERY thin beef soup).
Went straight to the supermarket after swimming today at lunch time having not eaten since breakfast. Let's just say it was an expensive trip. :-) But then again, by the time we got home, lunchtime was long gone, and we managed with just a modest snack.
I used to get hungry just messing around in the pool for a few hours, but I think that was just natural hunger. Just swam 2150 yards this morning and don't even feel peckish!!
Thanks !! I keep saying that in my club, and it seems like I'm the only one :'( But a questions bugs me: Currently training for a 70.3, I have no idea how I'm supposed to cycle 90km and then run, when 2000m of swimming makes me want to eat a full plate of pasta. And I can't even imagine for a 140.6... What am I supposed to do? (also getting massive stitches while swimming, but that's another problem)
You pretty much having a rolling buffet on the bike anyways , I eat a sandwich during a full 140.6 in transition as well cut into 4 slices , I’ve done 11 fulls and have a PB of 9;45 as well so I think I know what I’m talking about 😂
My wife and I swim at 0630 hrs and we go straight to Trader Joe's to shop and more importantly get just one free small cup of coffee & a thin slice of their treat for the day. That takes the edge off of our huge craving for food so when we get home our normal healthy breakfast.
I miss the childhood days of hopping out of the pool and getting changed as fast as possible to beat the queue at the tuck shop. Nothing better than a 10p freddo or a packet of monster munch as a post workout snack 😂
My swimming place always says they put the water temperature at 22°C, but my swimming teacher and us once put a thermometer on it... 18° it said 😖😖😖 I swam for 10 years and I only gained weight because I really couldn't stop feeling hungry
I found the solution to this by accident, I sit in the sauna/steam room for 5 mins after, but when younger i craved chips. Takes some serious mental toughness to avoid the drive through for some mcfries on the way home. Oh and its about time we could buy some GTN bobble hats :)
I cant swim when ive eaten, so i know if i go about 11am then swim for an hour, shower etc. its about 12:30 by the time i get home. I wont be able to eat for an hour or two afterwards, so then i will have a smoothie when i start to feel hungry and by the time i get really hungry, i have a big dinner like dhal and rice for instance or something else carby with lots of fibre that will keep me going all evening. So i just try and delay my swim and that way my eating window is reduced, like intermittent fasting really.
In Hawaii we spent the day swimming at Sandy Beach which has the record for the most neck & back injuries due to the really strong waves. Well we were ALL Starving and we saw a Hawaiian BBQ Food Truck and we had a Straight Up Feast!
Would love to hear you guys opinion on static stretching. Is there any point to doing it? All I hear about is dynamic stretching, but I have gotten my best flexibility gains from static stretching, but not sure if it matters to performance.
I'm gonna try the sauna and warm up. I ate like a pig yesterday...45 minute swim I'm ok...but I got new goggles and did 50...it made a big difference in my hunger
I swam in a lake for 2 hours yesterday and when I got home I basically inhaled 2lbs of wings without batting an eye. Then I was like.. Wtf? Now I get it.
Guys, this is real, any videos on gassing/flatulent after swimming? I really suffer, I cannot even bend on my bike after the swim. I have to ride upright for 1 hour. I’m doing Ironman in 2 weeks. Thanks
I been swimming but I don't get hungry and got this. I can't explained my body with science though. It may be eating 3 hours before competition though lol.
But does this mean that if you resist the urge to overeat in recovery you will end up loosing more weight because your burning calories that you aren't replacing?
Before I watch the video: It's because of all the THC in the water these days! After Video: Nope! As expected that was way off. Though I never actually thought it'd be due to an assault on core temperature. That's pretty interesting and makes perfect sense considering how high the specific heat of water is. Too bad we can't swim in something like vegetable oil. lol
I beg to disagree, in my opinion probably it is more related with the way you consume calories in Anglo-Saxon countries. Normally, dinner is your stronger meal, and that happens at night. So exersicing or not after a meagre lunch you'll probably be starving by seven or six o clock. As a spaniard my main meal is lunch and my supper consists of salads or similar light meals. So after exercising I do not feel hungrier, on the contrary, it almost inhibits that feeling.
@De St Hi, because of my working pattern I have to swim at 19:30, I have something probably a couple of hours before, a banana, you name it, and after swimming, a salad o a pot of hummus, again, something light. Hope it helps.
I’m hungry from researching swimming. WEIRD.

It makes sense, but hadn't thought of it on land too.
I'm the same way. Feel like I could eat a whole cow after swim workout. After stuffing my face, I feel bad realizing I just negated the calories I burned. Great tips!
Eat lower calorie foods! Veggie scrambles, French toast with egg whites and berries, Greek yogurt, there’s options here
I *do* eat the equivalent of a whole cow in terms of volume after I get out of the pool. 😂
I always warm up after, either jump into the hot tub or steam room. This helps a lot.
That's what I'm gonna try tomorrow!
@@donnawitkoski4208 Push fluids, too, Donna.
this answered one of the mysteries of my life...
Facts!
:)
RIGHT
I’ve always been ravenous after time in the pool. Good to know why.

I’ve just started swimming so glad to learn this early on!! Hot tea on the walk home instead of water!! Tysm!! 😊

Hot drink after swim workout is a great advice! thnx.
this is such a fun video, thanks for all the effort that you and your crew put into this!
I’ve always thought it was cause of the insane amount of calories burned
Something new learnt today 👍 Thanks heather
I must admit I found it interesting too.

Sounds like an acquired taste but think I've heard this before!
I guess I grew up with it, I remember having it as a kid, they used to sell it at a local pool.
Bovril!
Went straight to the supermarket after swimming today at lunch time having not eaten since breakfast. Let's just say it was an expensive trip. :-) But then again, by the time we got home, lunchtime was long gone, and we managed with just a modest snack.
Top notch explanation cheers
I used to get hungry just messing around in the pool for a few hours, but I think that was just natural hunger. Just swam 2150 yards this morning and don't even feel peckish!!
Was very informative thanks.n will take hot tea and snack and enjoy a walk after.

@@georgekirkman8325 Oooooh boy! I'm definitely taking a sandwich on board then :D Will feel less guilty about it

evilduck999 or some salty fries 😍
Don't think you're alone on that one :)

I swam for 10 years and I only gained weight because I really couldn't stop feeling hungry
Very cool info!
So this is also why when your sick with a fever you don't want to eat!
Your body core is warmer
I’ve been planning long swims just before dinner but have my regular dinner and try to cut down ever so slightly
Thanks for the explanation and glad to see I’m not the only one who feels hungry 😋 always have a healthy bar with me.
Well this explains a lot lol!
I found the solution to this by accident, I sit in the sauna/steam room for 5 mins after, but when younger i craved chips. Takes some serious mental toughness to avoid the drive through for some mcfries on the way home.
Oh and its about time we could buy some GTN bobble hats :)
That's convenient, wish I had that at my pool too.
So it doesn't help that my pool is near a buffet?
Thanks sooo much, I was wondering about that for 30 years now! And I go swimming 3 times a week!
It had baffled me too!
I cant swim when ive eaten, so i know if i go about 11am then swim for an hour, shower etc. its about 12:30 by the time i get home. Is so true! 😮 Ooh thought was imagining it hmm 💁✨
Girl you look great and awesome sauce in those jeans. But im learning to thx
Thats actually interesting
I agree, I enjoyed researching it as I have suffered post swimming hunger for years too.
exactly my questions. how not to get fat from swimming which is the best excercise to loose weight XD
I feel super hungry at about the 1h30m mark 😅
swimming makes you hungry,
running makes you poop,
what does cycling do?
Suffer, it makes you suffer.
Drink coffee
Cycling makes me want to do a swimrun
Tears up your bumhole
Muscle cramps in the legs
How about we gaining more weight when ear more during swim ? So how do we control them?
I'm gonna try the sauna and warm up.

usually I swim around 2-3 hours and do 3-5 km of swimming, after that all my body was shaking like crazy

Good vid
Wow cool
I drink protein shake so it helps in reducing hunger
But does this hunger correlate to more calories burned do to the body spending more energy trying to heat up?

I been swimming but I don't get hungry and got this. I can't explained my body with science though. It may be eating 3 hours before competition though lol.
You don't get hungry? After a few hours of swimming, I feel like I can eat 2 large pizzas 🍕 with everything.
It doesn't happen to me, I usually eat a protein bar after.
But does this mean that if you resist the urge to overeat in recovery you will end up loosing more weight because your burning calories that you aren't replacing?
You look great in your jeans Heather!
I don't feel hungry after swim, even it's at noon, but angry cause I swim like a stone 😡😁😁
Ain't gonna lie ate 2 chicken sandwiches cause of swimming.
