I have hair very similar to yours in length and also texture by your description. From Amazon, I bought “Sync Hair Guard & Ear Guard Headband” ($11.99 US dollars) that you wear under your swim cap. It’s not perfect, but it has helped a lot. *I don’t do flip turns* I also put my hair in a French braid like you did in the last experiment. Thanks for the video!
I'm black with thick natural hair down to my mid back. Layering up is the best thing that has worked for me. After I put my hair in a back bun, I use a thin cotton headband to catch the water at the edges, followed by a thin silk bonnet (sometimes two bonnets), then a clear shower cap, and finally, the silicone cap. It sounds like a lot more that it actually is. But it works every time. My hair may be a little wet around the edges if I go for a longer swim, but the majority of my hair is completely dry.
Thank god for this reply honestly. POV me with long locs/natural hair getting into swimming and wondering how I'm suposed to save my hair. Thank you for the tips.
I came back to this video to share a successful attempt to keep my hair dry. I wanted to make sure that I do not get it wet when swimming in low temperatures outside. What worked best was to use a regular swim cap and a neoprene headband on top. It worked for crawling for about 30-40 minutes (haven't tried longer, as it is cold...). I do have long hair, so I made sure to keep it as compact as possible in a braid, the end of which I flipped from the back of my head up to the top. I did chose a right headband to make sure that it does not let any water go through around the ears and it overlaps with the swim cap, creating a good transition. Hope it works for others. P.S. It would not make much sense on a hot day or in the pool, as it might be too hot.
The challenge is real! I spend almost as much time trying to get my hair dry, after a swim before work, as I do in the pool - I would pay more money for a swimming cap that keeps long hair dry 👍

This is all assuming you even get a cap that fits your braids or dreadlocks (If you do, you have to put them in a top knot which as Heather said is NOT aero at all). My sista I'm only a few months in swimming 3 x weekly. I purchased different Swimma caps they're made to target African American. Their base is more for people with dreadlocks, braids. I have thick relaxed hair that's longer than neck length but not quite to my shoulder blades. I don't have braids or dreads. I have tried so many combinations it would take all day. I can tell you low buns absolutely do not work for me. I tried to make a fairly high bun. The Swimma caps come in different sizes. I purchased the kids size first. It fit nicely. Then I ordered a larger size. I tend to keep adjusting my caps and goggles so I tore that one mid-swim. Swimma caps are shipped from Africa and On the pricier side. After I tore the larger one. I found something comparable on Amazon. It is a long hair swim cap Lahtak. I use it most now. I have a theory that for long hair it is better to have a cap with room at the top versus a super fitted cap because they shift no matter what. The larger cap just seems to work better. I also have a silicone headband by Sync. It says to wear under the cap. I worn it under the cap and over the cap. My problem is no matter what I do, I get different results. Therefore nite mostly I just wear the Lahtak consistently the back hairline is always damp. Sometimes maybe 1-2 inches above the hairline is damp to wet. The area diagonal over the ears is consistently pretty wet. Most of my hair remains dry. But like I said it's almost a different every day. I did some extra one day I put on a tighter swim cap, then a shower cap, then a fabric headband (like for when you exercise/run), then I topped with another swim cap. My hair was almost nearly dry... That just seemed like so much work. I never tried again. I was my hair when I get home, put in a dangling/moisturizing leave-in conditioner. Then I let it air dry for a few minutes. Then I do some 2 stand twists with a roller on the ends. Go to bed. It is so pretty, no heat, and can last after you do your final wash for the week.. Almost looks like spirals or just big waves depending on how big/small of sections you use. Also how tight you make the twists. It's the easiest, low maintenance hairstyle I've stumbled into. Good luck
Oh yeah I also have a TYR (I think that's the name). It's a ponytail cap.. Its ok but I don't really wear it anymore. There are a few different caps on Amazon designed with long hair and/or black hair in mind. I also found a gentler method to remove chlorine but I'm still experimenting. Thank you for sharing ladies, I want to get back into swimming but I've been really worried about the chlorine drying my natural hair out. I've never had damaged hair and I'm not trying to get it now! So I will be using some of these tips.
So the method I’ve found is brushing conditioner through my dry hair before plaiting and putting under a cap. You still need to rinse the conditioner off, so not technically dry, but it blocks the chlorine and you don’t need to shampoo after. Good way of doing a deep condition.
Oh! I was always putting conditioner in and braiding it, but no swim cap, and I was frustrated that it would rinse out! This is such a good idea, I'm going to be using this, thank you so much!
Thanks for trying to figure this out! Exercising 6 days week (some multiple workouts) and trying to do so without washing and drying the hair every day is a BIG challenge!! I’ll try the bun and double cap. Good Job!
With curly/ frizzy hair, if you can’t keep it 100% dry then there’s no point.... cuz you’ll need to fix the parts that get wet anyway. Really wish I had straight/ smooth hair that I didn’t have to fuss around with so much. DX

Hi Question: how is such a situation made? When the hair is finally wet or clogged? Hallo Frage : wie so wirt über haupt so welsche umstände gemacht ? Wenn die Harre am schluss doch nass oder klampt sind ?
Ok. Conditioner on dirty ish hair but just on the last few inches of your hair which are more prone to being dryer and damaged so it doesn’t make hat slip off round hair line then do the tight bun thing quite high up but then use a hat that is really tightly fitting as I find any air pockets make hat want to creep up and let water in. That’s all I’ve got!
It's not hard to french plait your own hair, Heather. Just needs practice. Think of it as good for your shoulder flexibility!. Anyway, I do the french plait, but I always wash my hair after swimming even if it is not very wet - want to get rid of the sticky chlorine-ness, and hair washing is a good way of making sure everything gets clean. I only very rarely wash my hair at home. But my question is really on the goggles. Racing swimmers seem to wear 2 hats with the goggle sandwiches in between. Why do they do that?
I recently tried a swim cap for hairbrella… they are wonderful but my hair did not stay completely dry so I had to return them 😢 I have hilite hair and do not want Any chlorine getting in my hair. For me, just wetting my hair and then putting a cream type barrier keeps the chlorine out but of course hair still wet.
If worried about chlorine damaging hair, you can apply castor oil to your hair, cover it with a shower cap, then a normal swim cap (latex or silicon) on top. Even this is not 100%. After 2km, you getting screwed.
My skin get very dry after swimming in pool. What is best lotion or oil to protect skin and hair, anyone? Water still seep into the swim cap after a few laps. I have not found any cap that work.
i used to have long hair before i got into swimming/triathlon. i've thought about this issue a few times before but haven't experienced it myself. the long hair even used to annoy me when i was "only" a runner though, as it's just a lot of maintenance and being an athlete who often gets wet and sweaty hair obviously doesn't make it easier. also, Heather has great hair, and plenty opportunity to show it off in this video ;)
Cute video... However still no successful long hair swim caps available. Honestly I don't understand why Speedo does not use the same rubber ribbed sealing which works great on their goggles and always keeps my eyes dry... around swim caps with adjustable straps for different head sizes ... Maybe one day they will actually care enough to do so... Until then lake water is definitely easier on your hair than pool water however even with pool water, hot oil conditioning three times a week with coconut oil really keeps your hair conditioned enough to withstand the chlorine... So never bothered with a swim cap before nor do I plan to do so in the future until they invent one that actually works 🤷
@@bizarrasp not at all tbh. It would leak through but overall it keeps the hair in itself. Tho the water gets in your ears and it can't get out due to the earcaps
it is absolutely impossible to keep your hair dry if youre doing any kind of serious swimming workout. i would even say that if your hair is dry after your workout, it wasnt a hard enough/long enough workout. its just something you have to endure when youre swimming...
How about no cap and wear goggles and rinse your hair good afterwards with non chlorinated water. Ask the olympian you had braiding your hair what she does?

I put a small amount of hair oil on my roots and length, and i wet my hair before swimming, after a swim the oils are still there, and my cap in not slippery, i don’t use a full silicone hat, and after my session i wash and condition my hair and it becomes so soft and shiny
Just wondered if the sticky stuff women use to keep wardrobe malfunctions from happening might help keep the ear section down tight as that seems to be the biggest problem.
Fabulous information
4:14 can't hear? I need to hear my coach telling us what to swim... :/
Is being bald more aero? Worth to go for that 2% increased performance!
The Papa Smurf shark looked great though ;D
my hair is down to my waist and have to use a school swimming cap. i can barely put my hair in it and it's my first period so the rest of the day my hair drips down my back and its SO uncomfortable.
Literally SAME when we had swimming in school before covid…. And I wear hijab, so that makes it 100x worse gives me an awful headache
@@aperson6231 oh, that must be so annoying for you! im so sorry that you get headaches from swimming. its funny how we're trying to learn swimming and im there trying not to get my hair wet. i think i cried once when someone splashed me because i was trying to swim above water the whole time. haha, im out of school now so yay!
Hi
Question: how is such a situation made?
When the hair is finally wet or clogged?
Hallo
Frage : wie so wirt über haupt so welsche umstände gemacht ?
Wenn die Harre am schluss doch nass oder klampt sind ?
i wore 2 shower caps, then a swimming cap, then 2 more shower caps, another swimming cap, and another shower cap
*it didnt work*
I need to practise then!
Swimmers tend to sandwich their goggles to help secure them a little more.
This is really helpful
i realllyyyy like those goggles you have! brand?
They're made by our friends at Orca. You can find a list and links to all our sponsors in our description below each video 🙂
Thank you!!!!!!!!
I'm going to try this one of these when I put my head under a pool waterfall. My waterpark has one.
The braid is what worked best for me when I used to have long hair.
I need to learn to do it myself I think.
If worried about chlorine damaging hair, you can apply castor oil to your hair, cover it with a shower cap, then a normal swim cap (latex or silicon) on top. Even this is not 100%. After 2km, you getting screwed.
Next video could be "Can you get sunburned in February ?"
Thanks for the comment Nico.
hair dry or not, you are looking adorable with the bun under the swim cap
What type of bra do u use?
Silicone material cap is best for hair ?
Yes, No ?
I wear a branded cap but my hair wets when I open it
Can you make an episode on swimming haircare but with black swimmers? Or at least curlier hair?
@GTN folks are great but the channel needs more diversity and representation
03:23 Zoma?
hey, I have short hair, I still take care of it!
I have the same cap with ear caps and it cost me three dollars
Do you like it? did it work well for you?
@@bizarrasp not at all tbh. It would leak through but overall it keeps the hair in itself. Tho the water gets in your ears and it can't get out due to the earcaps
I have bleached hair so the chlorine will turn my hair green and it’s what’s stopped me from swimming for years now
good
Got short hair, but great video!
Thanks Camiel.
it is absolutely impossible to keep your hair dry if youre doing any kind of serious swimming workout. i would even say that if your hair is dry after your workout, it wasnt a hard enough/long enough workout. its just something you have to endure when youre swimming...
they just fall off my head when I swim.
Am I the only one who find her accent cute?
how do you stop the chlorine corroding your mouth and destroying your teeth
My hair got soo damaged from the clorean
I saw a vid from tatiana illis for black hair care for swimmers chk it out
I kind of want to not wear a cap so that when I’m swimming outside, my hair can get blonder but I’m a little nervous for some reason.😅
You can wear a cap and a wig that looks like your hair. =D
Okay I'm a guy, but a tight black TYR latex swim cap keep my hair dry ;-)
That's impressive if it does. Thanks for sharing.
Why does it matter that you are a guy?
being more Duncan Goodhew ( ask your grandparents kids ) than Barry Gibb, i don't find wet hair to be an issue. 👴
Ha I bet.
A bolt head i a good head
LMAOO I have swimming cuz of school and I have curly hair- that’s like £10 of product washed away 😭
Her: I’ve got quite a bit of long hair
Me: with thick hair at my lower back
:/
🥰
I use all the products from Team Zealios. They sponsor a few pro triathletes. Amazing products. No issues with chlorine here.
I'll check them out, thanks.
Jeremy gave this video a thumbs down.
I think the last two could have worked; however, you left some spaces for water to get in :/
How about no cap and wear goggles and rinse your hair good afterwards with non chlorinated water. Ask the olympian you had braiding your hair what she does?
Is the quick answer ..."no" ?
we could spoil the answer, but it might mean someone could miss out on watching the video 😉
@gtn lol I watched all of it
I miss my hair 😂
But think of the time you save ;)
@@heatherfell_oly I would rather have hair 😂
@@arcticrunning8370 LOL
