Few threats have devastated India like the Khalistan insurgency of the 1980s and 1990s. A dark chapter that left tens of thousands dead, unleashed tanks on one of Earth's holiest places, orchestrated the most chilling terror attack in Canadian history, and silenced India's most formidable Prime Minister this movement appeared extinguished by the mid-90s, only to rise again from the ashes fueled by unresolved tensions and leap into headlines in 2023.
So what is Khalistan? Why has it resurfaced? And can fertiliser be blamed for it all?
    Well, let’s find out!

Whereas Punjabis in India only make up about 2% of the total population yet they are overrepresented in the army (mainly Sikhs) and entertainment industry (because of their fair skin colour which Indians are mad about). But the present day government of India doesn't respect the sovereignty of Punjab, their culture, origin and their uniqueness. They basically want all of the people living within the socially constructed borders of India (yes geographical borders are a social construct) to be ruled by a Hin-dutva dictatorship that doesn't respect the uniqueness of different cultures, languages, ethnicities and races within India.

Accept their struggles and don't forget ours, Hindus and Sikhs went through Ideological warfare and lack of knowledge fueled this conflict, we are united by ideals, don't forget what happened in the past but forgive on the way to the future.
Also try being open and view things from other side of the mirror, even if you are not able to accept that, thy being in there shoes and think like them(as in people who followed their leaders like sheep ) they were just people used by other people.
God never wrote our destiny but he knows it, we make our own path he just walks with us on it and waits on the end of it. He never tells us to do good or bad because he believes in all of us but we fight in his name but he never demands it. This further fuels the khalistani movement. Having heard how my mom dad families lost so many of their cousins to the militancy and police encounters while growing up, sometimes its hard to swallow the pill of injustice. Honestly my friend without being Indian but having similar issues and views with you i am gonna say; you are not wrong for feeling like that. Unfortunately there are 2 huge issues with situations like these:
      A) On a social level political motives for creating hate using the rational but not always accurate fear of future discrimination and assimilation.
      B) On a personal level, fear and pride.
Honestly India much like Europe should've never been 1 country or 2 or 3 or 4, there are so many different cultures and histories. That said, they should much like Europe, should be and must be united, to the best of their ability, because they have common experiences and a common recent history. In addition China on the north is a pretty big issue for the area and not being united will lead to more loss of freedom.

During the riots of 1984, more than just Delhi had been affected. In my city of Kolkata (back them it was Calcutta), the local Congress leadership alongside several Congress supporters had organised large teams to basically hunt down any Sikhs they found. Now back then Calcutta had far more Sikh Punjabis than now, since back then the Sikhs formed the base of our taxi and bus systems, working as drivers and mechanics. I still remember how my father told the stories to me, about how the streets fell silent after the news broke on Doordarshan (the only tv channel at that time) about Mrs. Gandhi's death. She may have been a partial dictator, but again remember she was EXTREMELY popular among the poor and underprivileged, for being a sort of "messiah figure" as a dedicated 'socialist'.
So anyways, the next day news broke out about some rioting across the city, though most of it was controlled because West Bengal was under the CPI(M) back then (the Communist Party of India - Marxist). However, my grandmother and a friend of hers, while returning home from work, found that in Dhakuria (southern Calcutta), a mob had stopped a school bus and were intent on burning it down along with its driver and all the kids (schoolgirls from a nearby girls' school), because the driver was a Sikh! Now my grandmother literally jumped onto the bus entrance and started shouting "BURN ME FIRST AND THEN BURN THE KIDS", while her friend rushed to our home back then, and brought my grand uncle, and then he calmly negotiated with the mob leaders and managed to save the bus and the kids, by explaining how the kids had done nothing wrong, and that the bus driver would need to take them home safely, and so on (he had that ability to defuse situations, you can expect that from someone who got a Ph.D under Jan Tinbergen himself). My grandmother later narrated how the driver was shivering in fear when the mob were shouting about burning him, but she managed to hold them long enough for grand uncle to come and defuse the situation. Now she was an old timer member of the CPIM too, you can expect this level of insane heroism from their cadres of back then. I always feel rather proud of how she managed to save those children and the driver all along. However, the sad part would be that most Sikhs would eventually leave Calcutta, due to many reasons like growing urban unemployment and strict price/wage controls under the CPIM government. Still, atleast I can say with some pride that my grandmother helped save a fellow brother in our beloved nation ☺️🇮🇳

I'm from the UK and live near a Gurdwara, and I've always been amazed by the Sikh communities' charity and tolerance in my area. In any crisis, for anyone of any nationality or religion, the Sikhs were there to help. There was this one incident i remember quite vividly.
Covid-19 issues left hundreds of delivery drivers stranded at the ferry crossing, which would take them to France usually, and they were not allowed to leave their lorries. The Sikh community came and provided food free of charge to the drivers and made sure they had essentials.
I think we could all take a leaf out of their teachings.

Indira Gandhi was a dictator at core. She insured that Socialism and Marxism is instilled in the veins of this country. It is extremely difficult to hear that such things happened to my Sikh brothers, I wasn’t born then. I don’t believe Khalistan as a concept is ever possible. Punjab is an immensely diverse state. 2011 Census showed around 60% Sikh population. Sikhs have already lost so much already. But Justice must be served for innocent people who died. Pakistan also had a much bigger role to play under the project K2 dubbed Kashmir-Khalistan. Even today, they have an organisation called Lashkar e Khalsa, which handles their Punjab ops.

I was a kid in central Delhi in November 1984. My father was a journalist & was privy to the confirmed news that Indira Gandhi had died, few hours before it was announced officially. He also sensed that slimeballs like Sajjan kumar were being mobilized to incite violence. He picked me up early from school & dropped me home. Then he drove around to as many Sikh owned businesses as possible- & tipped them off to seek safety/ shelter. Then we moved our Sikh neighbors from next door into our house for 5 days. My parents would go buy groceries & we would eat together. We were all instructed to tell people who came looking for that family that they went away to Punjab, while we hid them.
The neighbors also had a kid & the two of us friends thought of it as the most fun mini vacation ever.

This is an incredibly well researched and excellent explanatory video. I applaud your efforts in explaining the many nuances that led to problems in Punjab, the rise of the Khalistani movement, the "falling apart" of the movement into gangs, and most importantly the interplay between drugs, alcohol, suicides and costs associated with farming. You also did a good job of pointing out PM Modi trying to woo the Sikhs politically while other elements of the greater Hindutva movement sought to violently suppress Sikhs or fold Sikhs into Hinduism. Please keep up the great work :)

    • @ayushnayak4060
      @ayushnayak4060 Місяць тому

i donot know what is the problem for a sikh to be folded into hinduism. Hindutva says punyabhumi and pitrbhumi.
Punyabhumi: recognizing india or a part of india as the sacred land
pitrbhumi: recognizing india or a part of india as the ancestral land
Sikhs agree to these points because it is a fact.
As a hindu, I donot think of sikhism as a different religion. None of the gurus ever said that. There are hindu gurus as well who say things against the vedas. If I follow such a guru, does my religion change? It doesnt. But I follow guru nanak's teachings suddenly my religion changes.
It is important both hindus and siklhs understand that their dharma is very very same.
Also it is hindus that are poorer in the indian state. It is those bihari marginal labourers working in jat sikh fields who are the suppressed people. But nobody wants to talk about that?
Hindutva movement never sought to suppress sikhs. Hindutva movement sees sikhs as marathas who fought against foreign powers for the protection of dharma.
You can watch any pro right wing hindutva video about sikh gurus. Each of them is heavily respected like Gods. Donot associate hindutva with some random dumbass on internet. The largest hindutva influencers have always worshipped sikh gurus. The title of a guru isnt given to just anyone. The vocabulary itself is a reflection of the society.
The sikhs also reciprocate that. In both sides some dont.

Alot of bhindranwalas quotes are taken out of context. To further add, a lot of these attacks on hindus within buses and within their homes weren't even done by Sikhs who associated with bhindranwale. It is a well known fact to many individuals who lived through this highly contentious time that 'fake kharkus' so fake sikh freedom fighters came into existence to defame the entire movement. There are many sources which point to this fact, with once incident where Sarab Hind Congress i issued a report 'Conspiracy Exposed' and was printed in Indian Express dated September 4, 1984 which stated "Pakistani agents disguised as Sikh were trained in Kasur area of Pakistan by brigadier artillery regiment. These men, in batches of 300 - 400 were given there to four months intensive training. Most of those trained in these camps & training centers were smugglers, proclaimed offenders and criminals...." 1. Bhindranwale being a creation of congress.... this is just a falsehood perpetuated by Indians as a way to delegitimize his image. Theres no independent or third parties that can even link the two.
    2. The reason why Bhindranwale urged people to arm themselves. It was out of necessitie as the police and government no longer served to protect the people and were in fact more a danger to them than a help.
    3. The idea this is some diaspora pipe dream. Every single Khalistan leader has come from punjab. When sikhs go abroad they are no longer in fear of expressing there views on the topic as they cannot be harassed by the indian state. Thats why it seems support seems to be stronger abroad. Having a positive opinion of khalistan or owning literature or even liking social media posts can lead to people and there family being harassed tortured and arrested arbitrarily by the state. Just look at the case of Jagtar johal or that of sikhs who were jailed for life for possessing books.

I also think the role of Punjabi music, especially in the last 10 years, cannot be understated. Artists like Sidhu Moosewala helped connect diaspora Punjabi youth to the real issues back in Punjab, and at least started conversations about mutually shared problems facing the region. The more I watched this video, honestly, the more it broke my heart. I am an Indian Hindu, and I have grown up with a lot of respect and adoration for all communities in the country be it the Sikhs or the Jains. I had absolutely zilch of an idea that Sikhs are somehow being pressured to assimilate or give up their unique identity in one way or another by the Indian government. India is not a country which has ever been 'uniform in identity' ever in its history. Even during the ancient period of the Indus Valley civilization, we had three to four ethnic groups inhabiting our land. I also bow my head in respect to the Sikhs who must be having SO MUCH faith in this land and its culture, that despite so many atrocities they are still peacefully negotiating and actually willing to cooperate with India in every sphere. This is one community that has given a lot to us, and we cannot allow them to be marginalized or be tainted as the villain. I don't care about foreign Sikhs, but the Sikhs who live in the Indian state of Punjab deserve to have their demands HEARD and discussed. India is a union of states, not a Hindu colonization of non-Hindu subjects and I hope it doesn't turn out that way ultimately because of political powers in this country. Farm laws issue was national with agitating farmers from all over India...
and why take back on Gurpurab (you won't see politics here.. right😂 why not on or close to Independence like 370) and why not see that BJP failed to consult and then remedy the imposed laws when even The UP farmers were against.. tells you about the Autocracy... frankly I never heard Modi call out Indira but only moderate liberal Nehru...coz fact he is just like Indira and to your dislike he's gamin the system even better than her.. unfortunately ..
if emergency was forced upon people and you say you don't like it ... similarly notebandi and farm laws were forced and frankly nobody affected by these liked them.. so try to clear your own prejudices before talking about the 'later events' which weren't even related to any politics.. Punjab's movement was pure federal rights against centralisation of power.. no politics in the core issue.. first agree to this then we can discuss further..

      Its a biased asf account.
It will be also same if pakistan's hate for hindus was visioned in a video with just one sided accounts.
Why was there no mention of murders and raping of millions of sikhs by muslims during partition?
Why he didnt even show that khalistan also demand pakistani land?
Why no mention of other minorities of India like jains, buddhists , parsis who flourished under India becoz they didnt ha e stupid selfish leaders.
If anything this is extremly biased video trying to fuel to khalistani account.
Any neutral source would also highlight murders and rapes done by khalistani and one and only terrorsit attack done by sanatanis aka sikhs done on air india flight.
If anything hindus are shown as evil while in reality, Hindus even though majority have gotten shorter stick in every single case in India and are oppressed asf even by constitution.

At the heart of the problem, from what I understand, is the community lacking leverage in legislative representation in central government. Frighteningly enough, its not just a problem unique to Punjab. There is supposed to be a restructuring of constituencies, which no successive governments have still dared to implement, because it will strip away legislative representation in central government from regions that have successfully lowered their population, at the same time reward the regions that have gloriously failed at reducing fertility rates and population. Everyone knows that it is a massive conundrum if they touch, could terribly destabilize and alienate and be like a punishment to states that have performed better and states in India have as much of distinct individual identity as religious communities have.

I am a British born Sikh jatt now living in Canada. I am amazed how many Sikh youth in Canada blindly support the Khalistan movement while either never having been to India or being born in Canada.
I hope that this documentary, rings home why Khalistan as a movement arose, but why also the Sikhs and Punjabi’s generally living in India are NOT in support of an independent Khalistan state.
They want to be an integral part of India, while at the same time having a degree of autonomy
The ignorant fuelling of Sikh jatts in the west, does not help the cause.
What would help is the push for a diplomatic truth and reconciliation, which pushes for increased powers for Punjab and reignites a wider geographical area identified as Punjab as was allocated in 1947.
Punjab needs the type of investment the modi govt is doing in Kashmir, which has quelled the discontent there. Punjab needs that type of investment to give the youth a better future in India. India is now the 5th largest economy in the world. There will be a time in the next 20-30 years that the Indian diaspora will want a return or the youth of India will no longer look to the west to live and earn. Hopefully Punjab can also have a Bangalore kind of northern hub

The problem with this whole issue is multifaceted:
    1. The problem from gov. side.
Serious misgovernance, lack of understanding of its own people's psyche and views. And also some malintentions seeding from lack of understanding.
    2. The multinational interference.
Pakistani ISI and US+UK agencies fuelling this conflict's conspiracy even more **(all Anglo nations aligned with Pak interests during those times)** and maligning the minds of Indians at home and away and foreigners far away from truth.
    3. People NOT creating problems.
An average Indian understands the misunderstandings that have been created around this and knows that nobody has absolutely any malintentions for each other and that's why there is close to no demand for Khalistan at home, BUT in foreigner sikhs.

As a Canadian myself I’m honestly disturbed that this isn’t more widely known about here. Given the large Indian immigrant and descended populations here it is definitely of public interest and a lack of awareness, information and context… well I feel like those will probably do no good. If anything the lack of understanding about a clearly complex cultural/social issue (one largely exacerbated by colonial history in India) may just lead to higher rates of crime against Sihk folk, with an increasing frequency as well likely.
The same way a lack of nuanced understanding between how Radical Jihadis differ from most Muslims has since 9/11 lead to staggering rates of violence and hatred aimed at predominantly innocent peoples

I only learned of Operation Blue Star and of Bendwali(sp) just a couple of years ago.
