    This was a great video. I heard somewhere a nice tip about when the bill of the cap drops down, you know that they have committed and you can start your timing. Great stuff. Keep it coming.

    The timing of your move is essential it seems, plus a good split step. Thanks Ian!

    Great tip Ian, been really focusing on returner lately and will give this a try!

    Great stuff Ian. For some reason low level players put a higher value on getting beat down the alley than getting beat anywhere else!?!?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  Місяць тому +2

      Yes, you're absolutely correct, which is really a shame. My theory is getting beat down the middle could be either person's fault....but the alley only leaves one person to blame so people over protect it.

    Thanks, looking forward to trying this out. Been noticing myself some nights being a spectator to baseline play.

    9:18 That ball on the deuce side was freaking me out! 😳 Great content as always!

    Seems like this gambit is brilliant for a player to intercept a ball with the forehand and hit a winner. My daughter plays high school doubles, they don’t do much with a backhand volley. In this instance of the right handed player at the net is in the deuce side, perhaps the baseline player should be selling out to hit that ball near the service line.
    I am all ears 👂, comments encouraged

    I think this is great advice, maybe not clear examples though.
    In the pro example, the foreground player was stretched deep to his backhand on the centerline, very awkward. I assume that's why Bob bet he was about to get a weak ball. He just had to clean up after a great shot from his partner.
    In the 3.5, the opponent was maintaining a strong position with options, exactly opposite.
    Strong and weak rally positioning. Apples and oranges.
    Positioning is important, but I think the net player in the first ex was justified in being cautious, her team was never ahead in that rally. The percentage play is to go when your team has the upper hand. 🤷‍♂

    Really? Six net players to cover the width of the court sounds like an exaggeration. I’ve always coached the net player’s ability to control over 60% of the width of the court. (See Louis Cayer’s book on doubles tactics.)
    I like the comment on the overcommitted net player and the compromised recovery. 👍
    Also love the comment on timing the move to the middle based on the swing of the returner. ❤

      6 stationary ones: 6 foot reach X 6 players = the width of the doubles court: 36 feet. Obviously in real life players can move and cover more than their their stationary reach, I was just trying to make a point about how wide it actually is. Cheers!

    How do you think about how aggressive to be at net when your partner is a better player than you?

    • @EssentialTennis
      @EssentialTennis  25 днів тому

      Depends on the strength of your opponents. If your partner is also stronger than them then probably best to "stay in your lane" and keep pretty conservative. If your partner is NOT better than your opponents then you may have to be brave and bold and make things happen on your own terms at least a little bit, otherwise your opponents will just pick on you relentlessly, only when they have the upper hand.
