Ok folks. Steer clear of those tyres. After 2 weeks of use and roughly 100 miles the tyres hit the self destruct button. A huge delamination and bulge on the rear tyre has ended things. Spend your money elsewhere.

Gotta love those crazy 90s paintjobs! Personally I'd just have cantis in the rear to avoid that unsightly adaptor, nothing wrong with a disk/canti mix imo
in 2001 I was given a Scott Purgatory by my parents for commuting around town to work (I was at Uni). It was never high end, and I've owned many "good" bikes since including my current Giant TCR road bike, but of all the bikes I've ever owned it has the sentimental value, and is in near perfect condition - it is also smooth as butter to ride (having replaced the pogo stick it came with, with a basic rigid fork). When I changed that I also bought some decent Shimano V brakes to replace the stock ones and was shocked by the difference in stopping power and over time it has run on lots of rubber - my favorite were a set of Specialized Fat Boys (really skinny slicks) that worked great for commuting, but had zero grip anywhere but tarmac -- originally I thought I'd go disc too, but for a run about I don't see the point to the cost given the V brakes now work so well. When I find some I like it will get some mudguards -- love that I still have it 20 years later and it's so :"as new" that I reckon if I ever have grandkids they might be watching one of your vids for resto inspiration :-)
Thanks! It would definitely be better to get someone to properly modify the dropout with a disc tab like @2ndlifebikes has just done though. That adapter was a faff!
Problem Solvers sells a Fender Flute to help get fenders down close to the tire i. Situations like yours. Also Surly sells Bridge Club forks that are about an inch shorter than the Ogre one, and you can then still put in an oversized front tire (or even a 27.5 front wheel) to get the height and front end cushioning to both be decent despite being rigid.
Loved this inspiring build, the end pic of bike looks super good. I'm thinking I might buy those same tyres as the tough Tom's really slow me down and tan walls looks great. Gonna put that exact same rack on n all.
I loved the "Smoked Lilac" paint job on my original 88/89 Diamondback Apex...long gone unfortunately. And I love thumbshifters.....Still use them on my ALL my bikes....Shim XT and Suntour XC Pro's...7sp...but they will do 8.
You could probably leave the link rod off completely. With it's current geometry, it's doing almost nothing except adding weight. A longer rod might make the bracket look silly hanging off the back of the bike, but it will improve the geometry and stiffness of the bracket.

The failure to make a sell could have come down to some little details. I noticed that the brake bridge cable looked a bit broken up and all of the steel bolts/nuts looked "tired". I would suggest that replacing all nuts & bolts with nice new stainless steel and fitting new cables might have helped.

Nice little build, do yourself a favour though and grease every bolt that you used to assemble the bike. (Your future self will thank you) Also when you install the brake calipers, a little trick is to grab the brake lever whilst the bolts are loose and then tighten them, that way it's centered.
Yeah I know how to centre brakes ;) These ones were being difficult, especially the rear... maybe the adapter. I'd disagree with greasing up ALL bolts though. Some, like brake and crank bolts need a bit of loctite applie ideally.
