You are right. Never really thought about it but I have never heard him speak but only a couple of words during a band interview at most. Very interesting.
Regardless of all of the dysfunction in Van Halen, you can really tell that Alex has great love and respect for his brother and that he misses him every day. It's good to see Alex finally being able to talk about Ed and I am sure that it is still very difficult for him to accept that he is gone.
Two immigrant kids that knew 4 words in English transplanted in LA. They needed each other to survive. That never left them. Love em, hate em, kiss em or kill em, you don't want to be the outsider.
Wonderful to have Alex sharing his stories. It’s been terribly difficult for him to come to grips with Eddie’s passing and I hope sharing his memories of Eddie will bring some comfort in his grief.
AVH was the real brown sound according to EVH. Flat out said it. The brown sound was Alex drum kit not Eddie’s tone. I hear what he means. It’s not a muted kit, 70s had dead rooms, but it’s not that, his kit had a darker sound to it.
It’s really nice to hear Alex opening up and talking , and about Eddie , his love for his brother is very evident , I hope he continues to heal from it
Alex is the grooviest drummer in rock-n-roll. He and his brother had swing, great music, I love you bro, the Van Halen brothers are like family in our house.
@beefheart67 critical can be interpreted as mean. They knew what they wanted to be able to do even when roadies didn't. Don't give these types of stories too much merit. Being a roadie sucks for a reason.....
When I was 13 my father used to give me $3 every Friday night. $1 for the Van Halen party (Mammoth at that time), $1 of Beer and cigarettes, . And $1 for In-n-Out afterwards. I remember the first time he closed with Going Home up in the Pasadena meadowlands at the Somas brothers house. I also knew right then he would be big... So blessed to have grown up with these guys in Pasadena.
1:33 This is so refreshing to hear and so true. All this BS about if you just work hard you’ve get there is total BS. Sure that may apply in some cases, but no amount of work will ever put you on EVH’s level. Just won’t happen. Sometimes you either have it, or you don’t.
If you haven't seen the film footage Alex is talking about of Alvin Lee at Woodstock, do yourself a favor and look it up, and you'll see and hear one of the most blistering guitar pieces on stage ever. You'll probably need a nap afterwards - AND it's a great illustration of Alex's point. If Edward learned it that quick, that's truly mind-blowing.

I was w a buddy on a trip to Lake Tahoe in the early 90s and he slipped Ten Years After - I’m Going Home from Woodstock into the car’s CD player. I was blown away. Now I’m blown away again w Alex saying Eddie had it “note for note” the next day after listening to that 12 minute masterpiece l.
Alex Van Halen's drumming made EVH the top shelf rhythm guitar player and rock riff composer that he was. Nobody better rock guitar riffs for songs than Eddie Van Halen.
I will never understand why Alex is not often mentioned in "Best Drummer" lists. I think he is incredibly underrated. He is in my high single digit lists and with a fair listen I think he would be on a lot of other music lovers.
I have to say, it brings tears to my eyes to hear Alex talk about Ed in Pat tense, and to know that my favorite band of all time will never play again. I love you Alex, Micheal, Dave and my guitar teacher - Mr Eddie Van Halen - I will die a forever fan🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
They did straightforward rock with Dave; and interstellar stuff with Sammy. Alex’s drumming on Love Walks In and Judgment Day were… beauty and the beast. Right Now and Get Up…beauty and the beast again. Mine All mine … Yes level musicianship… that rocked. The list is too long.
@ Biased towards Edward and Alex Van Halen. Sammy matched Eddie’s music with his golden throat and sense for melody. Did not try to overshadow Eddie by “talking” “yelling” and meowing over his music like the previous singer had done. Just ask Eddie who shared the same feelings in public over and over again.
@@gokhanersan8561Dave was great. Set the new bar for front men. Amazing marketing savvy. Underrated singer and lyricist. He demanded a more "tough" sound from Eddie. There is no downplaying his importance to VH.

It must be something watching each other developing. Eddie obviously had these musical visions and concepts bouncing around since birth. Just a matter of development. Genius though. Straight up.
Although I'm not a fan of that era, I do kind of wish Alex would clear the air about Hagar...he's acting like he hates the guy...maybe he does, I just wish he'd address it.
So I just heard the NPR interview where Alex talks about his (undiagnosed) PTSD and how he could not control his emotions for months. Makes more sense now.
"That's where I learned about Ginger Baker & ah, I don't remember the other players in the band" (Cream, he remembers the drummer but not Eric Clapton) Alex VH drumming is so under rated. He's the Bozo for VH.
Alex and Eds treatment of both Sammy and Michael were very off putting to me. Their greed was blatant and inexcusable. His talent not withstanding, he's a prick
The problem with idols is, we idealise them (hence the idol factor), then we find they have done something shitty and demonise them. With time, we integrate and merge the good and bad introjects and realise they are human, with both good and bad qualities, this salves the cognitive dissonance and it bugs us much less.
With the life he lived who wouldn’t be. Coming as immigrants and having to perform on the ship at 6 yo to make money. Dad came here and washed dishes instead of being the amazing musician he was (big bad bill had old man VH playing clarinet) to having a feral childhood, being outsiders for looking Asian (more Alex than ed-they did get picked on) to being in the worlds top band for many years. These things take a toll on one’s sanity
Wow All the years of van Halen. I never heard Alex speak. RIP Eddy

It's really great hearing these untold stories.
I think this the most I've ever heard Alex speak... it is so cool
AVH’s drums were the perfect accompaniment to EVH’s guitar.
Hot for Teacher’s a prime example.
AVH was probably the coolest drummer of that era
And he recorded with an electronic kit!

Read his book and from just listening to him talk here, he is quite insightful and bright. Remember, he is 71.
I'm amazed that he's 71. But then I quickly remembered that I'm 54
He was mean to the roadie's which if true was not cool
