What's it like to run a 100 mile dogsled race?

  • ...for the first time?
    We decided to find out.
This race was at the end of January. We did several longer races after that, and learned a lot over the course of the season, so it's a bit embarrassing to look back on this first one! But, for the sake of journalism....
The race was the 2016 Beargrease Mid-Distance and we were so impressed by the race itself, the staff, and the volunteers -- not to mention the other mushers (including many of my mushercrushes) who were unfailingly friendly and welcoming. Thank you for a dynamite start to the season!

Thank you for bringing us along with you on this journey. My sled dog team consists of 1 Belgian Tervuren......but he pulls like 2 dogs. Breaking him in by skijoring and kicksledding. Hoping for another Tervuren next year.

Thanks for sharing. I used to volunteer at one of the remote checkpoints at the Fort Kent Maine 250 mile race. Its a great race held every year at early March. They have 3 distances you can race. I was always amazed at the relationship between the mushers and there dogs.

What a beautiful video and experience. And great storytelling (says a documentarian to you).
Just heard your Fresh Air interview yesterday. Congrats on the new book!
Incidentally, my ex is a musher, and I had always hoped to join her or be around her during it (I, too, love dogs), but we broke up right after moving to a land of winter snow.
So it was nice to be intro’d to you and your stories yesterday.
Continued success and enjoyment to you!

Why is no one useing sibarian huskies?
If 11 degrees were cold then you definitely need huskies or some dogs that more husky in them
Your dogs are beautiful just saying

A lot of people complaining that sled dogs are miss treated.
I'll tell you these dogs are most likely run every single day.
They get better whole food then y'all feed your dogs.
Most of keep your dogs inside and hardly walk them 65% of dogs in america are over weight and suffer from behavior issues.
So stop complaining about these dogs.
They are happy, healthy and do what they are bred for.

Hi Blair I think you have 2 channels I could only find this. I'd like to draw your attention to a post on Matt Thompsons channel her refers to you and the Iditarod 8n it and invited you to speak on his opinions which I and many other support. He felt that if you could listen to his post and then give a thoughtful overview of this race after hearing what he had to say. It is something he obviously feels very passionate about and I as a viewer did too.

A lot of dogs when not pulling a sled are tied up to bins, where they will continue to live their lives outside 24/7 in the winter and summer. Will you go to this facility and support animal exploitation?

    • @elijahhiltebrand5921

Nicole Evans Are you fuckin seriously going on every mushing video you can find and posting this, I already responded to one of your other comments saying why you should go get some legitimate experience before making an opinion, so go read that, but trying to punch your opinion on everyone possible by essentially just trolling everyone you can find is really scummy so again, go get some experience so you can know what you’re talking about or just stop

@@elijahhiltebrand5921 No one else is doing it. I work in sled dog racing for a few years now. Its pretty bad stuff and needs to be banned. Im not an extremist ara guy. But I know alot about animals and stuff. I can see dog racing for what it is ans why its an issue. Dog sled racing is no different from greyhound racing. Mushing is cool. Racing is bad.
