Exactly! I just did a podcast interview where I talked about how there are many great trainers but they don’t know how to stay on their own lanes and focus on what they can do , leave what they can’t to others who can.. Instead they mislead people , lying to them that their force free methods can actually stop their dog’s aggressive tendencies.. We all know it cant. If they only stick to their obedience training, agility, tricks etc then there wouldn’t be any controversy. There shouldn’t need to be any. It’s as clear as water like you explained it in this video. Thank you

It's honestly a stupid debate anyways. In nature dogs respond to an alpha. When a dog steps out of line, the alpha uses precise, calculated force to shutdown the bad behavior and the primal instincts of that dog are immediately activated and he is obedient and respectful to that authority. That's what balanced trainers are trying to replicate with aggressive dogs.

@@toddbender3463 well I think the point where this really started to gain traction was when david Merch (the person who coined “alpha”, announced that his research was flawed). But what ended up happening is that the R+ crowd took that and ran with it, twisted it to fit a narrative , and behold, the “alpha” vs “no such thing as alpha” war was born and has been raging ever since . Particularly when you have people like Zak George with his massive audience and smart marketing spreading the nonsense to the masses and speaking on areas he has no business doing so. There’s a reason he won’t accept Robert Cabral and dog daddy’s offers to have him on their podcasts..and he was offered quite a bit of money .

I need trainers like you & Beckman in my area... I rescued my neighbors 2 year old neglected American Akita & my mom has a German shepherd pup... she takes him to classes but I feel they are very much wasting money... they're dog (9 months old now) get in my 10 year olds face & starts barking like crazy & im scared he going to try to attack him... my mom don't seem to big on addressing the issue & her little dog class don't help...
Like when they first joined the pup was vocal reactivate (puppy, new), & they told my mom if she couldn't get the dog to quit being so vocal then she would have to leave the training class.... I figured the point of obedience class was to help with obedience... but I guess not.

Here in Germany we have a quite popular dog trainer who lately talked negatively about dog training in K9 teams without never having shown that he really can handle an aggressive dog. In his tv shows he just shows the simple cases, often without even take the dog by himself but through other trainers. He has the fear to loose control in a situation. People like you, Cesar Milan and others who really help people get along again with their beloved dogs are the winners, you’re right. I like to take impressions and ideas from your videos in order to become better and more understanding how to lead the dog. Half of them actually only cited other papers! Half of the rest used tiny numbers of carefully selected dogs. Your videos are clear, you explain everything, and you tailor your methods to each dog.
I wish that someday you'd make a video or maybe a short series of updates on dogs you've worked with, say 3-6 months later. Gail Everett, Exactly. It seems like a non sequitur to compare a bear in captivity shaping a single behavior with minimal distractions to a dog who lives with other dogs, humans, and goes on walks around dogs with different energy levels. How does that study compare to dog training? Also, surveys, can we talk about response bias? Who do you think participates? A bunch of Karens. It is insane to think an animal should never experience stress in an attempt to improve. I'm a therapist, when people work in therapy and have positive outcomes you can bet it has been an experience that included some stress.
I just wish one FF trainer would share one before and after video. It can be months down the road for the after. There are no videos of a FF trainer taking a dog with severe behavioral issues to a place where an owner can walk the dog through town and around other dogs on a loose leash.

@@Crystal-and-Dexter LOL, I don't like the idea of "Karens" since one of my favorite cousins was named Karen, but yeah, I vividly remember looking up a survey that someone told me "proved" that unneutered male dogs were more aggressive, and finding that it was a SELF-REPORT by the owners of the dogs. And there wasn't even a clear definition of what was meant by "aggression." You can perform a study, you can write a paper about it and even get it published, but that doesn't mean it's any good.

The way I become pack leader is to match the strength and out think them, however I couldn’t do it without your Beckman’s techniques. I corrected a 300 pound Tibetan mastiff with your back leg spin method as he lept into the air to attack another dog. He ended up landing facing me and the look on his face was priceless. No one was hurt and it deescalated a situation that was palpable. We got the dog the help he needed and I will never forget this experience because I knew your knowledge prevented a fatal dog fight. You post videos, I now post videos, anyone with NOTHING to hide will post videos. It’s those who talk twice as much as they listen are the ones to stay away from. You nailed it 100%. When I saw the balanced trainers defending themselves the past couple of weeks I went to watch this so called top positive only trainer dude. He couldn’t control even a barking border collie. It was laughable. He’d say use this treat to reward this or that and then walk away from people or dogs. He never corrected the dogs behavior to become a well balanced pup. All he did was avoid the conflicts. The videos never showed a dog that was trained to become a well balanced family member. The training just doesn’t work in the real world. And I’m glad you’re calling them out.
I would love for one of these positive only trainers to take one of my 2 female GSD’s for 1 week. The dog would ruin their lives because she’d run all over them. Not aggressively, just being a dog without a leader. My dog would become the leader and then watch out! They would not be able to use positive only to have a minute of relaxation. I have to let my dogs know how to behave. When it’s time to play, walk, rest, eat, sleep, etc. They’re dogs, not people. I love my fur babies to death and would never put them in harms way or hurt them. But a stern correction with my voice or leash is sometimes needed. Thanks for doing this video.

One of my dogs, an Aussie/cattle dog mix, I trained purely positively, not because of ideology but because I had her from the moment she was born and she bonded with me strongly from the start. All she wants is to please me so training was a dream. I never had to resort to corrective methods. However, that would not have worked with my other two, a pitbull and an American bulldog mix. They were and can still be, in certain situations, challenging so the Beckman methods are used with great aplomb! Thanks for the interesting video.👏

As someone who reads scientific literature, in a completely different field of course, what is often neglected is the limitations of the methodology itself. The methodology can only be applied under those strict conditions. Now that is not to say that there aren't good nuggets of information in the methodology but you have to know if that methodology can even be applied. In order to do that you have to observe the real time conditions and accommodate those changes that do happen in the real world. That is the nature of a scientific mind. A one size fits all methodology does not work unless it has an extremely broad definition attached to it.

Awesome video. Zak just released a video and I had three observations: (i) one of his dogs inadvertently received a massive correction - ran to the end of a 30' line at full speed while chasing the second dog and got a massive self-correction. Ouch! Not R+, but likely effective at discouraging a similar chase in the future; (ii) Zac uses a leash to encourage his dog to leap across a stream. Leash is slightly slack, but many gentle pops of the leash to get the dog to jump - also not entirely R+ but a very reasonable training method; and (iii) he continuously makes the argument that science is on his side, yet he has been an R+ trainer before the papers he cites were published. So was he anti-science when he started?? I find that line of reasoning confounding.
I am most aggravated by the "my way or the highway" attitude. I had a Norwich terrier that did great on R+ - she was highly food motivated and generally did not care of external distractions (with the exception of the UPS truck). The ZG method worked great for her - she would even disrupt a squirrel hunt to get a treat from my hand. On the other hand, my Rottweiler was a killer when I adopted him at 6 mos. I was his 5th home and prior to my getting him he spent his days hunting squirrels and rabbits with a pack of 9 adult Rottweilers on a farm. He was not exactly set up for success in the city. He is now 2.5 yo, is a model dog at doggy day care, heels perfectly in downtown Chicago, and passed his therapy dog exam. It took a full range of rewards and punishments (and 2-3 hrs/day of training and socialization) to get him to where he is now. Primarily R+, but also plenty of leash work and yes, even an e-collar to reinforce commands he knows while off leash. These are just two examples of "natural experiments" in action, even if I did not publish a scientific paper on my experience - one supports R+ only, the second supports a balanced approach. Net-net, there is no one path for every dog.
I shared my comments on the ZG video, but his response was a non-engaged dismissal, which is not exactly upholding the spirit of academic debate. That said, I love the videos, including the ZG content. I learn from all of them and each have contributed to my own successes.
And a special shout-out to Joel - your content is awesome. Thank you!

I came from a background in force Free Training, that is where I got my start. I think it is very important to understand those methods for the dog's they work for, but that is not every dog. The shar pei I just sent home from a B&T would have NEVER gotten where he is with PP/FF methods. He does well with a lot of PP, but he is a powerful dog who needs to understand his boundaries. Now that he knows what is acceptable his owner is thrilled.
Literally she contemplated rehoming or putting the dog to sleep because of his agression.
He is a great dog who was undersocilized with people and a freaking shar pei. Of course he was going to act aggressively. The breeder told his owner he was socialized. She meant with animals... not people.
With the use of the correct tools for this dog, and the correct type of discipline and rewards he is totally different. Much calmer, and he can meet people without growling at them. This dog doesn't do well with any corrections on his neck. Theu make the situation worse. I'm not a huge fan of harnesses, but that and a halti are the right tools for this dog. My feelings be damed.
Balance. Finding what works for each dog. Being flexible with your tools and methods is so important. A lot of trainers wouldn't have been able to do anything with this dog, or made him worse by accidentally rewarding his aggressive tendency. Balanced training saved this dogs life. He's not a bad dog, he just didn't know how to be good.

I've been researching dog training for 2.5 years just for fun and it's blatantly obvious that balanced training WORKS. Positive only training might work but if it doesn't, you just have a dog that continues to suffer!! I can't believe there's even a question about it.

    • @SuziQ.

Because positive-only training works for _some_ dogs (and _some_ people), sometimes.
I’ve had dogs who thrived with positive-based training, but I believe that those dogs are part of a minority of dogs who don’t need some correction.
My (neurotic) Lab corrected my GSD, as a puppy. I correct both of them, a lot (not hurting them, but I have to push my GSD away from or off me in certain situations, and she knows “off”).
We need balanced training with her; she ignores treats while outdoors with other distractions.

Studied both your guys’ channels so much, when I got my first ‘big dog’ (husky/G shep). Your reward and ‘fair’ correction system is a game changer. I feel there is no language barrier between my dog and I. I know how to communicate what I want to him, and he’s never left flustered. Can’t express how much I Appreciate you guys.
Shelter was giving up on my then 1 year old because of ‘lack of obedience and strong willed behavior’. Took the challenge, with your guys’ videos, and it probably played a role in allowing him to live a happy life. Had him for a year, and I couldn’t be happier with his outcome, so far.

My Rescue is receiving over 200 requests per month for intake of GSDs who are out of control. They claim they've tried, we try to give advice and counsel and they reject it, want us to take their problem off their hands and call us 'RUDE' for our respectful response. This is is the 20-30 yr olds that got those 'covid' pups and now giving up on them. We rescued 270 dogs last yr. our sister GS rescues are doing the same numbers and more and this is utterly ridiculous, the Dog is running the home, they have coddled and allowed the dog to be the boss. We are getting all these 1-2 yr. old in that are out of control, no manners, jumping on you, counter surfacing, bullying other dogs, like little 'fing' monsters. We don't have the time to train all these dogs so we have to send some of the big males to training to get them under control, cuz I'm only one person and can only work with so many dogs at a time. Like people, TRAIN YOUR FRIGGIN DOGS!!! I recommend folks to follow Beckmans daily and I'm just so sick of this crap of people not working with and training their dogs.

You hit the nail on the head in the first minute or so... none of the FF people can help an aggressive dog. If they had their way, such dogs would die even though many of those dogs can be rehabilitated... and the best is their followers will NOT respond if you ask them if it's ok that dogs die simply because the way to fix the problem involves adversive methods, giving corrections, etc. I don't know how they sleep at night.

I never knew that there was such a philosophy as purely positive training until I discovered your channel. UA-cam began offering me alternative training method videos. I watched a few and all I saw from that side was (as you stated) a lot of talk with no results. Science is observational and reproducible and in any truly scientific work, the utmost empirically shown data comes from clinical studies....i.e. in the real world.
What I have noted was that the people I've seen that target to attack any balanced training methods are people that have been influenced by emotions and have a very inordinate affection for animals, far above any concern they have for their fellow man and this kind of ideology is devilish.
And you put it very well when you said the stakes are high. We are talking about life or death in some cases!

My wife and I have had this debate. We realize that both positive rewards and corrections for negative behavior have a place. What's hard to know is when. Clearly an aggressive dog that wants to hurt someone or another dog requires a strong correction and strong leadership, but learning how to sit and stay might work better with positive rewards. What about a dog counter surfing, digging holes in the back back yard, biting the furniture, or pulling on the leash? Those are where I have questions. Where do you draw the line and move from positive rewards to corrections to curb behavior you don't like?

So, I commented that he needs to watch your videos exactly about how to correct that. Unless your a huge man, an owner will eventually lose that tug of war battle with their dog…plus, it’s not very enjoyable time spent with your doggo & less likely to want to take your dog on walks. Not to mention that the dog probably has other reactivity issues that should be addressed.

I have found many other channels are using trained dogs to demo, and trying to sell their food and toys, and their stupid methods don’t work. Yes, dogs are reactive, they lose concentration quickly, some have strong pray drive, particularly if you have working dogs, gun dogs, large dogs. But they are so intelligent, loyal, they need us human to learn how best to bring them up. It’s no accident, it’s not the dog’s fault, it’s our fault if we don’t do it properly. Thank you so much from U.K. ❤

Can’t agree with this more. I personally believe a correction is a command just like any other. I believe you can train a perfect dog with only a recall, sit, stay, and release command. If you use your corrections as a recall command, before releasing them back to making their own decisions, they will slowly develop positive decision making skills. I believe this is the fundamental concept behind your loose leash training method, and it has simplified the way I go about interacting with the different dogs I have to work with.

    Thank you for your video.
    That's exactly what I felt.
I totally support Balanced dog training. Because I had learned the "force free" training method from a well-known British dog trainer and believed it was the way to go. But when I found out that it did not work for our dog (she was a very willful Shiloh Shepherd), I found out about Cesar.
Since then, I have been watching videos of balanced trainers and trying to improve by learning from them.
The British male trainer I studied under was a "euthanasia for aggressive dogs" kind of guy, but also at the time, there was a Positive only female dog "trainer" (you might know whom I'm talking about) on a British TV program that seemed to have been mimic the "Dog Whisperer".
In one of her episodes, she cruelly encouraged euthanasia for the owner of a dog with aggression (if I remember correctly, it was due to fear or insecurity).
It still pains me to remember the guy who walked into the hospital with his dog in his arms in tears. At that time, I was absolutely convinced that Cesar could have fixed the dog.

They say, I’ve heard of her and don’t like some of the things she does “I’m like what? That she can help you fix your problems and you have a nice dog?” The purely positive are so busy knocking her, it’s sad. They aren’t the ones doing the assessments for the councils in the pounds, but she is. As a ‘balanced’ trainer she is mostly positive reinforcement anyway. The other stuff kicks in when she has a really tough dog and I’ve seen some hard ones and the change is the proof in the pudding. Have seen some pretty amazing results…..my dog, for one.

This is the problem I’m having, I have my own dog training business, my methods are VERY similar to Joel’s hence why I love his channel, however I’ve had so many bad interactions with people seeing me do corrections saying I’m hurting the dog but I’m over here like “did the dog yelp? Is it’s tail still wagging? Shut your mouth then.” It drives me BONKERS when people are uneducated about a topic yet run their mouth about it like everything they say is fact. Legit had an old woman with her yappy ass unruly nasty dog call the cops on me when out with a clients dog on a walk a week ago, the cop asked me to demonstrate what I was doing so I showed him all the corrections that I gave the dog & he looked at me so puzzled & went “this is what I was called out for? People are literally dying & THIS is what I’m responding to?!” Made me chuckle, needless to say he left & funnily enough called me yesterday scheduling a session for his own dog! Thanks for the new business Karen, I appreciate it! 🤣

FACTS - Ive just got compliments from my vet about Akita puppy. My father trained dogs for military and passed his training methods down to me. I went on UA-cam to fill in any gaps and reset and your videos are the only ones that were familiar and that I trusted. My vet told me that they had a horror of an Akita pup in the office and that she was dominating the owner and biting their staff. My akita was well behaved and respected and constantly looked to me for guidance and command. I mean look at how the breeds parents manage their pups. Momma dog has to check the pups consistently until they learn to respect her. Some of my neighbors tripped out when they seen me training my pup but they changed their point of view when hey watched my pup wait on my commands and ignore distractions. Ive even used your method of abnormal vocalizations and touching on the neck or flank to help other people control their unruly pet. No you don't beat your dog but you have to respect the fact that animals come from a reality with force. Akita puppies start testing you as soon as 6 weeks and they want all the smoke. If you don't go balanced early you will pay in pain and heartache.

I sympathize with you about "losing the battle." I also had to put down my last dog, though he was much older, but for the same reason, that I just didn't know how to cope with him. I'll regret it to my dying day, even though everyone supported my decision. Once I found this channel, I realized that following my gut instincts with him instead of the PP stuff probably would have solved the problem. But we can't blame ourselves for not knowing something that isn't easily available, and if you've got a dangerous dog you can't just foist them off on someone else. I do best by remembering the joyful times we had - I hope you have memories like that.

Amen! I am so tired of hearing these positive only trainers cutting down dog trainers who are using proven training methods. Sure there are a lot of dogs that you can train using positive only training. I had a Sheltie that was amazing..you gave the dog a command once and he did it. Our Lab totally different. I came close to putting a prong collar on her...probably would have gotten her training done sooner. I use a chain correction collar on all of my dogs. The other side though makes it sound like we don't praise our dogs in training and we all do. But it's that you can't have treats on you 24/7 and I have always wanted my dogs to listen to me because they know that is expected and that we have a bond...not because they will get a food reward. Usually only use food rewards on young pups or maybe for the first time I am introducing a new command. Thank-you for putting out these videos!

I totally agree with everything you are saying here. I watched Zak's videos about Dog Daddy and I was shocked. I used to be a subscriber to Zak's channel on UA-cam (even though I honestly was never all that impressed with his training techniques) but after seeing how he spoke about Dog Daddy I unsubscribed. And I have definitely lost whatever respect I ever felt for Zak.

    Lay it out Joel.
Your training methods are the best!
Excpet I’m not having the best of luck with the gentle leader, it is no match for my Doberman. He just fights it the whole way, it’s ridiculous how resilient he is. I might need to go to the prong with this tough nut.

It is too bad that the rising popularity of purely positive training came at a time when nearly all the dogs in shelters are powerful breeds that the vast majority of people cannot handle. Add to that the guilt trip of the “adopt, don’t shop” campaign and you have a recipe for disaster.

Well - with an exception. Susan Garrett showed up and talked openly with Ivan, for over 3 hours. It's an amazing discussion that's worth listening to, and exactly the kind of long-form, open discussion the dog community needs (needs) to be engaging in. Susan's dogs and her success speaks for itself, as does Ivan's - both are two absolutely brilliant, successful, gifted trainers. They got more done in the way of productive conversation in those 3 hours than any other discussion / "debate" I've heard in the last 3 years.

Your methods have helped me tremendously with my reactive chow-golden mix. She is still has issues with the postman, FEDex and UPS. But occasionally she will surprise me by starting to bark at them and then come running into the house, like oops I screwed up.
I just need to remember to work with her on come and get when she is not being triggered.
I walk Ruby with a retractable leash, but I use your methods. I've found it easy to just tap the brake to get her to stop pulling. I can also have her walk beside me with the line loose too. I just like giving her the option to roam and sniff at times while giving me the option to reel her in. Also , I use the brake to give her a quick & sharp snap I couldn't achieve as effectively using your method.
It takes practice and diligence to use a retractable leash this way, but the results are amazing. I've taught it to others and they see immediate results too.

I too am a fan of the retractable leash and I use it the same way. 👍 Easy to just do a quick brake check to correct and it makes easy to do a release “free” for a potty or a sniff. 🌼🐶

I think you may be missing the reason for the leash pop and the stop and go the other way. It's about your dog should be checking in with you, knowing where you are. The pop makes them turn and look at you. They should know where you are at all times. They are not supposed to go and do their own thing especially if they are reactive or bark at other dogs or people.

PLEASE say it louder for the ones in the back shooting spitballs at eachother with helmets on their heads!😂🤣😂 Love your methods, found you a year ago, I am a DIE HARD Cesar fan, have watch everything he does. I think what's special about you is you delve into the details Cesar shows what he can on TV, you really get into the nitty gritty on it! Honestly my dream come true would be if you could get on Cesars show or some how team up with him for an episode...it would be like a Royal Rumble taking on aggressive dogs! Keep up the great fight, definitely have a life long subscriber here, I just wish you and Cesar weren't 3000 miles away so I can meet you!

Agree 100% with you and Dog Daddy! I’ve watched the majority of trainers comprising of both groups, and you definitely win!! I have two American Akita’s and no “positive only training”would ever work on their dominance and aggression issues. Thanks for your videos!! Amazing!

Joel, you have been spot-on about everything that I have heard you speak on in your videos. I am a 68-year-old, 5-foot-tall female, owner, and trainer of Team Peaches Dog Training and Education (UA-cam). My training experience of other people's dogs dates back to 1969. have been training dogs since 1969. I am in 110% agreement with your methods of training. you know what you are doing. I am a 68 year-old- female. I have 7 dogs who are mixes of Border Collie/ Jack Russell, Jack Russell/Pitbull, Black Lab/Pitbull, Catahoula/ Australian Cattle dog, and Catahoula/American Fox hound. All are victims of cruelty, abandonment, and neglect. Two were put on the dangerous dog list due to full-on attacks on humans before they joined my pack. Since coming to live with me, all 7 of my dogs have become, secure, calm, cooperative, and happy.
I never forget that they are highly social, pack animals who are also predators. Who thrive when there are clear boundaries, rules, and someone that they can depend on and respect. Dogs need a hierarchy to function mentally. In my dogs' way of thinking, I have earned and maintained the right to lead and lay down the law for every dog in this family pack.

Positive reinforcement has its place but it doesnt get a dog to respect or accept you as the alpha. That is the key. Be the boss!

ooohh... you went full alpha.... never go full alpha.

    • @Rubyruppells

Alpha theory came from a faulty study of captive wolves. It is scientifically DEBUNKED. Wolves in the wild live in loose cooperative structures and domestic dogs also behave differently from wild wolves. There is no ALPHA like what you’re insinuating, it’s plainly misinformation.

    • @kellerayra7363
      @kellerayra7363 Рік тому +2

The word Alpha is why force free trainers take issue with alternative training methods. There are no alphas in the domestic dog world. Just bold personalities that need a firm set of boundaries applied by a consistent calm confident leader
