Love your pedagogical style here! Especially how you immediately have the beginning student playing Bag's Groove in multiple keys! Really fantastic lesson!

Thank you for this lesson. You are a great teacher. Wish I had someone like you when I began.

Not even a couple of minutes in and I love it! Why? Because it stimulates and encourages the learner instead of spoonfeeding. I like the by-ear approach. A couple of tries, and I got the melody. Surely knowing it's Eb and black notes helps, but that's the point: providing a few clues, setting the stage, so to speak, and then encouraging filling in the gaps on one's own. That's what proper education should be all about: from the Latin educĕre, taking out, extracting, raising. The student is not a vase to be filled, the 'liquid' is partly already there but the student has no idea ;)
    Thanks a bunch!

Thanks for the clear explanation. Your other video on voicings is super helpful too.
What do you recommend for beginners to start off with for improvisation? Do you suggest learning licks and applying them directly into tunes?

Hey -- sorry for the late reply! Somehow I missed the notification of your comment. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of learning licks and plugging them in. I like to start with making simple melodies from the notes of the chords and then gradually embellish those. I'm planning a bunch more videos on the topic -- hopefully you'll find them to be helpful.

Great lesson. Will take me a while to get through this. 😅 8:52 "So, if you were to stop this video right now and play through this 100-200 times, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world." Haha, it would take me days/weeks to get past this part. But really beautiful improvised playing later in the video. Keeping time is the hardest part for sure when deviating from practiced playing.

@@roberthodson my first time playing black keys, so took some adjusting, I tried some stuff, also recording and playing at the same time is very disorienting ua-cam.com/video/iddXpOEbBx4/v-deo.html

Hey -- glad to see you trying it out! One suggestion is to slide your entire hand forward into the keys, so your fingers are resting over the black keys, just like when you play on the white keys. Keep posting your progress!

I also *highly* recommend playing along with this:

@@roberthodson Thanks doc! Yea, I pretty much recorded as soon as I was able to repeat it 3 times. Right now my hand is less tense playing this for sure. Recording and looking/listening also helps me see issues you don't notice while you practice, I should do that at the end of each session.
