IMPROVISATION 100!

Nine months ago, I started recording and posting free improvisations here on UA-cam this is my 100th improvisation video! As always, nothing is pre-planned. I empty my mind, put my hands on the keyboard, and let them find some music. Thank you so much for listening. Felt like playing this song tonight, so I hit record. I'm trying to incorporate some of the free textural play that I use in my non-jazz improvisations, crossing over into jazz tunes. Blue in Green seems like a good tune for this.

A short solo piano improvisation on Nardis by Miles Davis. I've been listening to the dozens of late Bill Evans recordings of this tune where he does an extended solo piano cadenza before he plays the tune. Perhaps you hear some influence here.

    I really like and appreciate this video thank you, I am totally blind so I had a little difficulties following the now is the time and the back groove. I wasn’t exactly sure what you were playing. It was going super fast and I had to try to pick it out by ear, but I really appreciate this one and I will use it again. Thank you.😊 27:51

      Hi Jenica -- thank you so much! I'm so glad you're finding this video helpful. For the other videos that you were having a hard time with, was it just because I played the melody too fast? If it would be helpful, I could make a video teaching Now's the Time and Bag's Groove completely by ear, with a verbal description. I will also make sure to give more verbal descriptions of what I'm playing in future videos, rather than relying so heavily on the music notation. Thanks so much for mentioning this.

    hi Robert- rather accidentally i came to your channel! Thank you so much! You are completely underrated. Is your playlist for writing in SATB completed? And obviously i missed something: what is page 48 or so? This kind of instruction is great, although i miss the book/Material or what…. thanks for any info!

    • @roberthodson
      @roberthodson 6 днів тому

      Hey, thank you so much! I so appreciate your kind words and am thrilled that you're finding value in the SATB videos. Those videos were actually created for the students in my theory class (I teach at the University of Wisconsin), and the page numbers refer to the workbook for Tonal Harmony by Kostka & Payne. I'm pretty sure that there's a pdf floating around out there, though you didn't hear that from me (: The academic year starts up again in 2 weeks, and I'm planning to revise and expand all of those videos so that they're more friendly to a general UA-cam audience rather than just being geared toward my students. This is actually part of my larger goal of making an entire 4-semester undergraduate music theory sequence available for free on my channel. So, keep following, and you'll see more material.

    Not even a couple of minutes in and I love it! Why? Because it stimulates and encourages the learner instead of spoonfeeding. I like the by-ear approach. A couple of tries, and I got the melody. Surely knowing it's Eb and black notes helps, but that's the point: providing a few clues, setting the stage, so to speak, and then encouraging filling in the gaps on one's own. That's what proper education should be all about: from the Latin educĕre, taking out, extracting, raising. The student is not a vase to be filled, the 'liquid' is partly already there but the student has no idea ;) Thanks a bunch!

    Great voicings very nice , but very complex if I not now where they came from... I wil practice these also... Is it True that the greatest or professionals pianist having there own trics to build these voicings... that they see from each other heey what's that came from? Like 2 greatest magicians not nowing the tric from the other? I am study first the guidetones from each 7th chords... and wil practice these in the circle of fifths but also random by see the first chord ... thats the tricy part to now right away what to play by random ... Quick thinking is always the hard side of the game😂 But I learned not to be overwelmed to want play everything the most jazzy chords are the rootles and the 2 grip ,its maybe a bag with the best trics and sometimes to switch for a other tric... 😊
