BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website. www.britishpathe.com/
"Can a country disappear?"
lol, Poland disappeared for 123 years and came back
Just like my dad
Atleast we know that he got the best quality of milk for disappearing that long
Israel stopped existing for 2000 years and then came back
Sugarcoating colonialism, disgusting.

isn't Siam/Thailand basically renaming the same region? you know, like Persia/Iran, Burma/Myanmar Ceylon/Sri Lanka , New Granada/Colombia and others?
and if it is 20th century.............. East Pakistan/Bangladesh and North and South Vietnam and only because of a few short years, we can't include Hawaii here you can see many nations renamed en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geographical_renaming#Countries
And yet the Ottoman Empire isn't here.
it's different. You can see this www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-Ayutthaya-Siam-and-Thailand
as I said, it is imposed name of another language, and essentially same region with some small differences................... otherwise we would have to rename Italy (has slightly changed through history ) or Poland................. and if it is because of how the people want to be named........... than USA should call Germany Deutschland and same with Spanish speakers ( Alemania ) and Japan should be called Nihon or nippon
Absolutely
Cylon and Siam did not just stop existing. The only thing that changed about them was that they changed their names.
+Jeddak John the hole list is wrong, de facto : Siam = Thailand, Yugoslavia = Serbia (now), Ceylon = Sri Lanka, Soviet Union = Russia, Tibet = integrated in China (unwillingly), United Arab Republic = separated into Syria and Egypt, Czechoslovakia = separated into Czech Republic and Slovakia and East Germany = integrated into Federal Republic of Germany (colloquial called West Germany)
@@ruwiki Yugoslavia was not just modern Serbia.
It covered Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia/Herzegovina, Macedonia, & Montenegro (& arguably Kosovo & Vojvodina...)
@@ruwiki I agree that the name changes shouldn't be on the list, but not all of the elements are wrong.
Yugoslavia - a federation of states which all separated and went their own way, including Serbia. Serbia was not just a rebranded Yugoslavia
Soviet Union - same as above. in fact, ironically they existed, for a short period of time, only in Kazakhstan. Russia declared independence prior to the formal dissolution of the Union, so for a time both Russia and the Soviet Union existed at the same time
Tibet - was annexed by another country, so it no longer exists as a nation
United Arab Republic - split up into two states which held none of the governmental structures of the past regime, therefore it no longer exists
East Germany - voluntarily joined West Germany, thereby stopping to exist as a nation.
Did you write this just to act smart? Because if you did you failed miserably.
They didn't change their names..they use the same original names🙏🙏
Ceylon was a somewhat still british colony while sri lanka was full independent

And the Tchaikovsky overture march
Well doesn't that mean British empire will have to be mentioned
What about Prussia?
Przemek Serkowski It's about the 20th century and Prussia is basically the German Empire and later on existed as a state until the Gleichschaltung.
Przemek Serkowski East Prussia after the Treaty of Versailles
Suchti322 No the German empire was made up of various free states such as Saxony Bavaria or Thueringen
Cas Theschulze Yes but Germany was more a great-prussia than anything else.
What we consider nowadays to be German and what was considered to be German for decades is essentialy ''Prussian''.
LNER 4489 TC East Prussia was a German province from 1918 to 1945, but it was never an independent country.
It isn't even German anymore; the southern one-third of it is now part of Poland, and the rest is one giant Russian military district.

Seriously, they are British and did not include Rhodesia?
Mike Foxtrot shshsh, let's just sweep that British imperialism under that rug, shall we?
trailduster6bt Rhodesia was not recognised by Britain since UDI.
trailduster6bt As well as nowhere recognising independent Rhodesia (the federation and northern and southern were after all still colonies), bear in mind they've probably selected the nations they have on account of the video footage they have of them.

***** I know, but eh, still sort of a country.
I can think of Prussia as a country that doesn't exist anymore.
And by the way, I like how you played Moldau when talking about Czechoslovakia. That music almost makes me cry, even when listening to a recording with bad audio quality.
I always thought that Czechoslovakia split in half, splitting the name in half too.
Isn't it the actual case?
Haha no. Czech state exists for more than 1.000 years, Slovakia was part of Hungary till 1918. Since 1969 Czechoslovakia was a federation state of 2 republics. So no split of the name - Czechoslovakia was the merged name of Czechia and Slovakia.
@@nraven1 does the history before first Czehoslovak republic matter? Republic included Czech and Slovak lands. When it split, lands did split in half, so did the name.
@@britiw : Of course, if Czech state was founded in the year 895 and with the same capital was transformed to Czechoslovakia in 1918 and recreated in 1993, it makes matter. 1.100 years of history is quite long.
Ahaha this comment is gold!
Democratic Kampuchea. Though it occupied the same area as modern day Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge regime that ruled between 1975 and 1979 made it a historical oddity for Southeast Asia: A comprehensively totalitarian and genocidal state that sought to reverse sociocultural evolution and revert the nation to an agrarian ideal by targeting not only undesirable social classes but the population as a whole. This was to be achieved through mass campaigns of killings and forced labour, effectively turning the country into a network of gulags.
It was renamed under Crazy Lon Nol
The Federal Republic of Germany ("West Germany") has not stop exisiting. It just incorporated The German Democratic Republic ("East Germany") in 1990.
Martin Wilke Well.... here's the thing. ("West Germany") was always just an (informal name) for the Western part of Germany that was a Republic, but that was not its ("Official Name"), so in truth it never really existed as a country, but just as a geographical term, so no...... Now that all of Germany is united (East, South, North, and West). There's no use to describe the "Federal Republic of Germany" by the informal name of "West Germany".
@@rexultimatum2588 I believe you completely missed Martin's point there...

Hawaii was overthrown by the us
Yes.
Well It Was Overthrown By The Americans Living There Then Applied For Annexation To The US Such As What Happened In Crimea With Russia In 2014
@The American man And Before Then It Had Been A Territory Since The American Plantation Owners Overthrew The Kingdom Of Hawaii And Applied For Anexation By The US Government As A Territory
1980- Rhodesia
1945-Prussia
Technically Rhodesia was never independent, and it was the new government that would gain independence from Great Britain. It was like the US declaring independence from England. You can say it was independent, but they still needed to actually gain independence. Sad that Rhodesia is gone though.
@@sumvs5992 They were practically independent before UDI but they were never recognised by anybody so I get your point it was de facto not official

very interesting video sir, but some clips of the video you have used to show Tibet actually show parts of Nepal, (Durbar square of Bhaktapur & Kathmandu) and Nepal has always been an independent sovereign nation since its establishment in 1768.

it's actually called "Vltava" FYI
@@flyzart8148 thanks for the name :)
But if you look up "what a wonderful world minor key", you'll notice the same melody :)
The country named 'Ceylon' ( by the three colonial powers i.e. Portuguese, Dutch and the British), has not ceased to exist or lost its sovereignty. It has only changed its name to 'Sri Lanka' ( like 'Siam' to 'Thailand') which means in the Sinhala language ' Respendent Isle', on May 22, 1972, when the country declared itself a Republic and shed its dominion status in the British Commonwealth. The original name of ' Ceylon' prior to the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505 was ' Sinhale' that had lasted for more than two thousand years. The early travellers to Ceylon such as the Chinese Buddhist monk Fa Hien ( 410 A.D.) in his 'Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms: Being an Account of His Travels in India and Ceylon' refer to Ceylon / Sri Lanka as the ' Sinhaladipa' ( Island of the Sinhala people).
Fa-Hien's writings and those of another Chinese Buddhist monk Xuan Zang (also known as Heung Tsang )as well as other ancient Chinese records referred to Sri Lanka as the land of Sinhalas. The different Chinese names Shizi guo, Sit Tio, Si Tiao, She Tiao, Seng-Kia-lo denoted the same meaning - Simhala, Sinhaladipa or Kingdom of the Lions.

It's not entirely right to say West German stopped existing, because no new nation was formed in 1990. The GDR was simply incorporated into the FRG.
The queen lived through all of these👁👄👁
Many did including my grandfather for example
Prussia 1525-1947
Although colonies may not be considered 'nations,' many had central governments and their own monetary systems; so, I listed some of those that I could remember along with actual nations of the past. I also list nations I didn't see in other comments.
Biafra; Rhodesia; Germania and Troy in ancient times; Siam; Persia; Abyssinia; colonies such as Italian Libya (Tripolitania), Italian Somalia and East Africa; German East Africa, German Southwest Africa; French Indochino; Belgian Congo; Bohemia and Moravia; Ottoman Empire; Prussia and other German Free States (semi-autonomous Danzig; Pomerania; etc.); Danish West Indies; German Solomon Islands; Kiautschou Bay concession; Chefoo; Tianjin; Burma; British Malaya; Dutch East Indies; Tanganyika; Portuguese Angola, Macau, India, Guinea, Brazil, Mozambique, Timor, etc; Swedish Gold Coast, Guadeloupe, Saint Barthélemy, Tobago, New Sweden and others; etc., etc...too many more to add.
Rhodesia wasn't a colonial power

Eastern Rumelia - In 1877 after the April Uprising(1876) began the Russian-Turkish War which led to the liberation of Bulgaria. The country was divided by the Great Powers into The Kingdom of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia which remained vassal to the Ottoman Empire until 1885 when Bulgarian king Aleksandar Batenberg announced the unification which had to be deffended with a war against Serbia that Bulgaria won.
I'm not sure I agree with some of these.
Siam is Thailand. Simply a name change to better reflect the people.
The Soviet Union was Russia with a name change for about 70 years. Yes parts of it broke away but IMO it was still Russia.

"Bangkok" is also the name given by Westerners. Bangkok is actually just a small district in Krung Thep (pronounced "Groong Tape").
I know you're a Westerner who has probably never been to Thailand, but the pronunciation was pretty bad. Sorry. I know you're just giving history, but I wish people would look into correct pronunciation before making a video.
Another fun fact-
"Thailand" or Pra Tate Thai in Thai, means land of the free. Thai = Free -when translated.
Logi Wan Groong Tape you mean in normal pronunciation or fucked up anglophone pronunciation? Tape or Tejp?
GrigorijRasputin That is how it is said in Thai. If you're picky and want phonetic spelling it's this- gʊŋteɪp
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to add a tonal marker, as Thai is a tonal language, over the phonetic spelling, but it's Mid + Falling

The Ottoman Empire
Cudo The Great that's country ?
sakurakou2009 It was, but it no longer exists today. It was kind of similar to Germany during ww1(it was an Empire), and thus was the name of the country, also.
January January I know it's existed but it wasn't country , it was caliphate mean it was like many small countries under 1 flag but as one country it didn't exist like that , for example Egypt and sudan was called egypt and sudan just like they were called now and they were under ottoman caliphate rule , even turkey was called turkey at that time , saudi and the other gulf countries were called Hijaz , while Syria Lebanon Palestine jorden etc were called sham , all the Ottaman caliphate regions had their own kedawi or sultan mean something like small king and all of them follow the caliphate ...
So I wouldn't call Ottoman caliphate as country cuz they weren't .
Well in that case the Abbasid Caliphate, Ummayed Caliphate, Ummayyad caliphate, the seljuqs from Egypt and many other muslim caliphates just as much as ottoman caliphate, don't get me wrong it was they spread Islam and defended my country iraq and their territories but by far the best caliphate was the Abbasid( lots of reasons why but itssssssssss tooooooo looooong) hope you research though it's interesting what these caliphates achieved which wayy more than the Europeans can dream of.
Taha Hasan I agree that abbasid was great caliphate , islam golden era was in abbasid , ottamans weren't bad as well , I hate fatimiya , the hakim bi amer llah was horrible .
so in order abbasid > ottaman > omaya > fatimya

First few pictures shows as Tibet was Nepal and the distorted was the Tibet back then.
Well, technically, Czechoslovakia was also invaded shortly after the WWI, by Poland and Hungary. Althought less known facts, those were the only wars fought by sovereign Czechoslovakia on it's own territory. (Many people would say, that there were none, but there were o.O)

RHODESIA!

Okay, I'm confused about what this video said about Siam. Does it no longer exist? Or did it just change it's name? I think there is a big difference between the two. Additionally, a change in boarders, or a change in governments (even types of governments) does not mean that a country no longer exists.
