Thank you for taking a family field trip to explain and document what happen. These canal blowouts are common and in the past rarely repoted. So again thank you for taking the time to hike up there.
Yeh, those old gold miners didn't give a hoot for the environment they were destroying. Not only with the canals, but with huge areas where they just washed the mountain down the hill to get their gold.
I’m a 6th generation Norther Californian ... always concerned with water rites for the environment and farms and community ... THEN Tulare lake emerged this year ... come to find out ... Seriously ... the corporate farmers could have been pumping water into the aquifer that has an order of magnitude more capacity than all our reservoirs combined and instead the corporate farms directed the water flow into the San Joaquin river into the ocean and then challenged the state government and tax payers to build more dams .... Pump into the aquifer under the Central Vallely and monitor the activity ... And done, no California water crisis ....
A lot of effort was put into refilling the aquifers this year, thankfully. Some was pumped by pipes (which someone on Facebook told me was an environmental disaster, but I couldn't understand why). A lot of it was just done by purposely flooding orchards and fields to let the water settle naturally. (Better to do something than do nothing, I believe). It would be nice to know what the condition of the aquifers is now. I also tend to believe that we need to have a lot fewer people and cows in California to "done, no California water crisis..."
Do we have the report on what happened? I imagine a formal investigation has been completed. Where can we see that report?. You mention the breach flow was 40cfs. How long until this spill was stopped?
I sure as heck rather have some mud in the river then a nuclear meltdown or some other form of fossil fuel burning. The fact is no matter what there is risk with anything. But why don't we wait till next year and take a look at the Salmon population I doubt there's going to be very much of a difference, salmon have been making their way up creek for a very long time and all you need to do is look around to see that there has been many different geological events in our area that has changed the course of rivers and creeks throughout this planet's history and the salmon are here. They're stronger than you give them credit for
You're right, they're extremely tough. It's a bummer to see them have to deal with bad conditions when they're already having a really weak run, though. Seems like it'd be easier to get through something like this with 20,000 adult spawners, like we've had in recent years, vs 400, this year. Not many dead fish were spotted after the mud event, so that's good news.
@@TheLookout1 Thank you for your coverage of this incident. We live close by to where the break happened and witnessed the damage first hand. I do think a fish ladder construct project needs to happen on Butte Creek as it would give them access to ideal spawning grounds further upstream. I've seen the success from a fish ladder for salmon where I used to live. However the macro scale problem that exists that nobody ever talks about in the dwindling adult salmon population is acknowledging the over population of the adult salmons biggest predator, the Sea lions. They are no longer endangered, their overall population curve increase directly correlates to the decrease in adult salmon populations. The Sea lions now even swim to fresh water in the Delta and Klamath for less feeding competition. Yet this topic is never brought up in the salmon habitat discussions. All the lifelong shore fisherman know it and see it first hand. Yet the environmental groups and politicians won't touch the topic because it would acknowledge their lack of protection and planning for future generations of other populations. Have you heard anything about when they are supposed to have it fixed? I've heard from a neighbor that it was a dam break further upstream that caused the flume failure. As I talk with the pg&e workers none of them know anything. But there's been tons of helicopters flying materials in everyday of the week for a few weeks now.
Me too, Yankee Hill. And in many cases, such as mine, the mandatory FEMA "cleanup" was almost as bad as the fire itself. I don't think they will ever be held responsible to the extent that they should. If you or I had done a fraction of the crimes they have, we would never see the light of day again... Our two-tiered justice system at work. Peace and love.
There’s Nuggets popping out from that Water Pipe done, but I care about the Restoration of the Spawning Water for Life! Wake Up Californians and Start the Restoration? Politicians what funding for infrastructure and education? 🤧🤙❤️💪. No More Taxes Until They Listen To. Stop Paying Gavin!
And how much are you paying for power now in Cali? It'll cost you at least double to 'decarbonize' whatever the f that means.. The fish can handle a bit of mud dude... Come see the Glacially fed streams here in WA state continually full of both dirt _and_ fish.. geeze you guys get too wound up about the damn fish.. all this hulabalu for the past 30 freaking years has changed yearly counts not. one. bit. I for one get sick of it. Salmon spend most of their life cycle in the Ocean.. Maybe the reason for dwindling counts (which I think a lot are made up) has little to do w/stream access idk. Nothing we have done has made any difference so far.
Can you substantiate those claims? I could cite numerous studies showing how sedimentation adversely affects salmon spawning beds... The fact is that PG&E doesn't care about anyone or anything except $ for their top executives. They have proven this time and time again. Anyone in this area who has been dealing with them and all of the fires they start knows this. Peace.
Wow, so because they spend lots of time at sea , they don’t really rely on their spawning habitat that much, got it. Ok I will not try to convince you the world is round.
@@lewisg1736 Okay buddy fair enough idk all that much about Salmon so I'll ask all you experts once again.. If you're even close to being on the right track where the heck are your counts? How are these streams doing where we took out those decrepit dams? I sure never hear no bragging .. last I seen numbers continue to tank everywhere.. I know for a fact upwards 7 million spent up here about 10 or so years ago for habitat restoration on the Greenwater river. Numbers the last 10 years on the white have been same dwindling ho hum.. I'm just sayin' man if you're all so damn smart where are your results?
@@Danstaafl The dams were removed this year. The numbers will be meaningless for a couple more years. Check back then. (Science does not work overnight.)
Shocker, another PG&E disaster due to neglected infrastructure.
@@basking_in_it This time it is Salmon, last time it were animals and Human but not a single person went to jail.
Thank you for the information Zeke!

Thanks for the history lesson. I'd no idea about the mining-hydropower connection. Most interesting.
In nearby Placer and El Dorado counties they bought the canal systems and upgraded them to become safe and productive.
The surveyors for these canals were the last straw in the decimation of the Yana.

Yes they were.
Unbelievable violation of the public trust!
Thanks for your attention to this matter. PG&E, again.

I don't have specific info on how long it took PG&E to shut it off.
