Rebuild of Evangelion Angels Explained [Thrice Upon a Time post-Release]

- In this video I go over all of the Angels in Rebuild of Evangelion for the exception of Kaworu Nagisa. The angels are the traditional foes in the Evangelion stories. In Neon Genesis Evangelion, the angels where assigned a name, something that tends to follow in other stories like the Neon Genesis Evangelion Manga by Sadamoto. In Rebuild of Evangelion, or the New Theatrical Edition (NTE) the names where removed, but the numerical designation still exists. Known as the children of Adam, the Angels of Evangelion are known to be alternate versions of what a human could have been if these would have eaten from the fruit of life. The Lilims, or Humans, come from the seed of Knowledge, Lilith, who has been the tradional second angel since Neon Genesis Evangelion. Thar role prevails in Rebuild. The angels first appears in Evangelion 1.0: You Are (not) Alone or Jo, others appear in Evangelion 2.0: You Can (not) Advance or Ha, Evangelion 3.0: You Can (not) Redo or Q and Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time or Final.
Rebuild of Evangelion, known in Japan as Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition is a Japanese animated film series and a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime television series, produced by Studio Khara. Hideaki Anno served as the writer and general manager of the project, with Kazuya Tsurumaki and Masayuki directing the films themselves. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Ikuto Yamashita and Shirō Sagisu returned to provide character designs, mechanical designs and music respectively. Amazon Prime added the four Rebuild of Evangelion movies on August 13th, 2021 to their catalog, being those Evangelion 1.0, Evangelion 2.0, Evangelion 3.0 and Evangelion 3.0+1.0.

Ramiel-chan got a glow-up. Still best girl.
I would like to mess up Ramiel any day of the week.
Why girl?
@@lesliesmith6718 I’m pretty sure all of the angels are canonically female
@@hiroshiyitama2888 but where's the source?
@@lesliesmith6718 some of the angels they are named after are female, so I think(don’t trust me) that’s what people go off of when talking about the genders
Also, remember that according to the original creator of the show, this isn't a reboot of the series.
9:28 Correction: Leliel is the 12 angel in Neon Genesis Evangelion, the original Sahaquiel being the 10th angel.
9:38 Correction: Israfel, not Israfael.
Sachiel is my favourite.❤
tunniel hahaha i love this community
My favourite is Zeruel, but I also really like what they did with Ramiel in 1.0.
Me too i like zeruel paper of god lol
One critical difference between the two continuities seems to be that third impact (and all higher impacts) requires not just both fruits of life but an actual living angel in addition to an eva.
When Shinji caused near third impact, he was in contact with the 10th angel.
When he caused fourth impact, eva unit 13 had the twelfth angel.
And when the way was opened to the Golgoth object, Gendo exploited the ninth angel inside Asuka.
The rituals all seem to require the sacrifice of an angel, which is pretty metal.
I feel like Gendo using Nebuchadnezzar's key made him the 11th angel
It did katsuragi stated that he rejected his humanity
great vid. I thing Ramiel will always win fan favorite. I Doubt Anno fully realizes he skipped the 11th. Between abandoning this project sever times, rewriting it multiple times, never watching the finished product, he probably thinks it makes perfect sense because its a story he's told so many times in his head. but we have to try to put the pieces together
I didn't catch that 11 was missing. So in theory we would see the arrival and slaying of 11, and the arrival of 12 in Mark9 perhaps before it is trapped. I so hope we see that story some day...
@@jeffcarrier9808 Many fans in Japan consider it as Shinji and his Eva causing near third impact. Shinji's Eva was sealed by the technique to seal Angels and Shinji's DSS choker also has the technique.
@@wannaeatreadlamb HUH! Now that's an interesting take for sure...
@@wannaeatreadlamb anyway there is a 14y time gap so my guess is Anno is totally aware of the 11th angel "missing".
He never watched the finished product?
The most comprehensive channel about evangelion rebuild, keep up the good work
Maybe the 11th angel is the one that asuka and mari fought in the beginning of the third movie
those were eva drones sent by nerv to protect eva 01 in orbit
@@beny9561 So why did Asuka's computer say "blood pattern BLUE"? Wasn't that the indicator for an Angel?
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944They're called the 04-series and they do have Angel-like properties. They were the human staff at the Nevada Nerv branch when Eva-04 caused an impact-like event. The "accident" there was a test run for Seele's version of Instrumentality: Human souls in Eva-like bodies with Angel-like autonomy.
@@szeltovivarsydroxan9944 Because they're angels. All of the monsters in the series are angels, because the Evas are clones of Adam. Some of the Evas aren't mere clones, though, like the Mass-Production units from NGE are using the S2 engine like unit 4 did, as opposed to standard Evas who's cores contained the souls of Lilin. If you only think of angels being the natural children of Adam bearing the fruit of life, the numbered angels in the series, then that makes the Mass-Production Evas and unit 4 "half-angel" and half-Adam. This applies to both the NGE and Rebuild unit 4's. The NGE version we know had an S2 engine while I don't think it's confirmed the Rebuild one did, but it's official designation is "Next Gen Testbed" and it meets the same fate so it seems pretty clear that it was in some fashion part-angel.
This is especially obvious when you realize that there are SO MANY unit 4's in Rebuild. Waves and waves of them, 4444C is made out of 4 4 bodies and powered by a battery of 2 4 bodies carrying... y'know, batteries. It seems likely that what happened to unit 4 in Rebuild is that the combination of Adam and Lilith flesh created a miniature third impact type event that, like the one that happens to unit 1, probably turned anyone at the facility into a kind of ascended angel type form, which could then be used by Nerv as the basis for more unit 4's.
The cross-tesseract thing was a 4 called Mark.04A. It is essentially an angel, yeah, but it's not the 11th angel predicted in the dead sea scrolls, it's an artificially created angel-cyborg... usually called an "Evangelion" in the series. Maybe you've heard of it.
Love it. I watched 3+1.0 yesterday and binged all your Videos on this movie. Perfect timing ❤. Keep doing those great vids
Thanks! It means a lot. Much more to come.

Interestingly I’m very sure that Lilith’s eyes have the SEELE seal on them, that’s what the red coloration is
We need more Tunniel and Clockiel
Also I like how you made OG Ram and Rebuild Ram distinct since Rebuild Ram is compared to that one flexible/creative gal you have as a friend while OG Ram is the same but kinda outdated lol
I like both the blue diamond babes
Honestly I think Tunniel is supposed to be Gadghiel and Clockiel is supposed to be Matarael
The 11th angel could be Gendo, since he has angel laser eyes
Great vid! I think the 11th Angel is actually the original Wunder. It was an Angel that was captured and restrained by Nerv as part of Kaworu and Kaji’s “arc” project (hence why it screams and seems to function like a living being). Gendou, then, sought to clone it 3 times as per HIS plans of using the arcs at the final impact in 3.0+1.0. With the Marks 9-12 as their masters, each Evangelion clone resonates with a clone of the 11th Angel, awakening them all and recreating the Four Adams.
The Wunder, as well as the other three battleships like her, were constructed from the corpses of the Adams, with their cores being made into Mark units 9-12. This is why they can control them, and why Mark 9 was called Wunder's original master. It's also why the Mark units are completely made of core, and why they can function as the Adams (sprouting Wings of Light) during the ritual to forge the two new spears from the Black Moon.
Essentially, they take the place of the MP Evas from EoE, in that they are reconstructions of actual gods, with both bodies, core & pilots formed from human-derived angel facsimiles.
Lastly, Gendo is actually the 11th Angel after fusing with the Nebuchadnezzar Key, which is why it's called "the missing number" by Kaji. All the angels were planned ahead of time, and foretold by the Dead Sea Scrolls. So, Gendo hijacked the number and became a god to enter the Doors of Guf himself. After he fuses with it, we see in Thrice Upon A Time that there are five crosses over Antarctica, instead of the four previously seen. This would also explain why Unit-13 doesn't have an AT-Field, as it was also constructed from core, and it's body was fused with Gendo.
Gendo + Unit-13 = an Adam surrogate.
Edit: I also want to add, that I believe that in the Rebuilds, 2nd Impact was caused by them creating this key. Instead of it being the Contact Experiment that birthed Kaworu & reduced Adam to the embryo.
I think a big issue a lot of fans have is they're overly sold on the idea that this is a continuation of the original story, instead of it being a meta-thesis / deconstruction of the original series. Thus, why it's a rebuild from that deconstruction, and not a remake or a sequel.
@@NextToToddliness this is a really solid theory. I much prefer this to what I was thinking. Thanks for sharing!
I guess, what core material do you think Eva 13 was constructed from? Does the fallen cross represent the death of the Angel made from the key or the union with Gendo?
@@takuto2512 Eva 13 is an entire Adam, not just the core. there were 5 Adams (represented by the 5 crosses in 3.0+1.0), 4 were turned into ships and vessels while the fifth was Evangelion 13.
Do we actually know if s2 engines exist in rebuild? I think they dropped that concept so they could make the ability of an Eva to go berserk more logical. We only know that unit 5 blew up while trying a new energy source but it's unclear what exactly they have tried.
Also for Unit 1 to awake and go into pseudo evolution to become an Adam the pilot just had to berserk himself. He did not absorb an s2 engine nor does Ayanami play a big role in this except her being the trigger of Shinjis will to get her back. His Eva began to transform before he pulled Unit 00 core out of the angel.
Also when you make the assumption that basically every Eva can go into pseudo evolution, it makes sense why Wille puts DSS Choker on Asuka as well.
The S2 engine is the fruit of life and the source of power for the angels, so they would need some other mechanism to do all the crazy things they do without that.
what a amazing video. congrats man, don't stop making content like we've seen on this one❤️
"Liquid"? You mean LCL?
what if the Nebuchadnezzar's key was made by experimenting with the 3th angel when it was locked up and maybe that is why Gendo ascended and gained god like powers because we do see kaji leaving with the key
That sounds plausible. There was an entry plug drilled into the 3rd angels core...
The construction of the Key was what likely caused the 2nd Impact in the Rebuilds, as it functions similarly to the Adam embryo. The idea being that they wanted to have a failsafe way to directly control the Human Instrumentality Program. The 2nd Impact, in both continuities, also seems to the inciting ritual, which causes the events to come to fruition. If you think about it, none of the horrible things needed to happen in the story, including the flooding of the earth with the blood sea. Like Misato said at the end in Thrice Upon A Time, her father was a mad man, and part of her journey is undoing his mistake. He convinced a bunch of young, brilliant people to sacrifice their humanity, literally in most cases, to bring about the HIP.
I'm certain that the 3rd angel is Iblis, an angel that originally appeared in an Evangelion rpg in 1996. The most obvious hint is that it... looks almost exactly like the skeleton of Iblis, it even has a shell, and although the core is on the end with the head rather than the tail, this is a really minor change compared to the design differences that, say, Sahaquiel went through. But that's superficial, what you really want to hear is that both Iblis in the rpg and the 3rd angel are both initially encountered in Russia. The 3rd angel is discovered in permafrost, and Iblis first appears in Siberia... which is mostly permafrost, and the 3rd angel is later moved out to a location in the middle of the ocean, which is presumably the Arctic Ocean... y'know because it's part of the Russian/European branch of Nerv.
So, same design, same origin. That's all well and good, but that's not the actually reason why I'm 100% certain that the angel is actually intended to be Iblis, that's because of the name. See Iblis is the name of the angel in Islam which is basically the counterpart of Satan in Revelations or Lucifer in Paradise Lost - he's a fallen angel, the devil, the lord of hell, that kind of thing. The 3rd angel is absolutely fallen after a fashion, it's reduced from its former angelic glory, a cyborg skeleton monster dwelling deep below the Earth surrounded by a sea of blood, but that's just the surface stuff. Nah, the real thing that nails it without a doubt is that the area it's kept in? Cocytus, the 9th circle of hell, the frozen lake of tears where the souls of traitors go along with the trapped body of the devil himself.
If you know your Dante, the rest of the structure of Bethany Base just nails it down further. The roof is called Acheron, the river you cross to get from the vestibule to the 1st circle, Limbo, which is what the outer shell of the base is called. The shaft is called the Styx, a river that makes up the 5th circle, and before making it into the shaft the 3rd angel (who is obviously Iblis) has to get through a security system called Malebolge, which is the name of the 8th circle. And then of course the area where it's contained is Coctus.
This is a super nerdy and niche connection to make, and based on the design alone it kinda seems like somebody just liked that particular apocryphal angel and wanted to use it as the base for a new one in Rebuild... but when you realize that the symbolism is really just not even a little bit subtle? All of the other connections to the rpg's Iblis stop looking like coincidences, and suddenly it becomes obvious they just... aren't.
"Clockiel" and the 12th angel don't really have named angels from other media that are really clearly their basis like Iblis, though. Which is cool, cuz that means they're basically just entirely new concepts, but it also kinda sucks because I don't know what to call them. For what it's worth, I've seen Cassiel called the angel of time before, which I think might be because of its association with the planet Saturn? But I don't know a lot about how angels get their epithets.
Ramiel, Zeruel, Sahaquiel are the top three but I have a weird soft spot for Clockiel
I am simple guy. I see ramiel. I leave like.
angels are my favorite part of evangelion!
YEAH YOU SAID IT MAN
The thumbnail made me realize that the final scene of Shin Godzilla where the humanoid forms were branching of the tail, was a call back to Lilith/Adam (I forget) hanging on the cross. 🤯😂.
I'm just here for Ramiel.
Same
I feel like Sachiel's bird skull can still blink in the remake one
So, what were those things Asuka fought in the beginning of 3.33? It clearly said blood pattern BLUE. That was not an Angel?
Those things (the 04-series) are Evas because they were impaled with the other Evas at the end of Shin. They are blood pattern blue because they have S² engines/ fruit of life.
WOOHOO! SAHAQUIEL IS HERE HUGGING ME
I still love sachiel
wait, so they completely got rid of Arael?
And gaghiel and israfael and sandalphon and matarael and iruel and leliel and armisael
ariel or ramil might have the most powerful at field.
ariel ramil
I like Zeruel, thats it
Ramiel boutta make me act up
I was a bit disappointed by the lack of explanation for unit 1's power in the fight against Zeruel. In the original series, it was explained by it having undergone some change before the fight, but there was no such thing this time around... iirc.
