Thanks for commenting! This is simply how I do it. Many people close the black tank before opening the grey tank because they’re concerned about back wash. I found that leaving the black tank open while you dump the grey helps clean out the hose and system. Good luck with your Zion! Make sure your join the Roadtrek Facebook page. Lots of great information being shared there!

Why don’t you close the black valve before opening the grey. I was told you should always close black before opening grey to prevent cross contamination. Please clarify? Thank you

Hi there, I’m not sure there is a right or wrong way to do this procedure. My Roadtrek dealer suggested I leave the black tank open while I dump the grey as this helps clean out the macerator hose and system from any material that may still be present from the initial black tank dump. My Roadtrek dealer did not suggest to me there would be any issues for cross contamination as the tanks are completely separate. I’ve also added a video tutorial from a RV rental company I found some years ago on UA-cam. At minute 7:48 the host also suggests to leave the black tank valve open while you dump the grey tank but gives no explanation why. Have a look at this video as well. If you feel better about closing the black tank valve before you move to the grey then I would suggest you continue doing it that same way. You end up with the same results. See link below. Good luck!

Your vehicle doesn’t need to be on but coach battery needs to be on. If your discharge button isn’t working I would suggest you check to see if your coach battery is on. If it is, it could be a bad fuse. I would also suggest you become a member of the Roadtrek Facebook group. There’s a lot of good information there!

Roadtrek directions tell you to close the black tank valve before opening the gray. You do not want cross contamination. One reason is water from the gray tank can slosh into the shower pan or into your drains. If you make instructional videos please do a little research before giving wrong info.

Hi @dennim3286, thank you for your comment. When purchasing my Simplicity, my Roadtrek dealer explained to me that leaving the black tank open while emptying the grey tank will help clean out the waste. When I asked about cross contamination doing it this way. My dealer suggested I remember the black tank is already emptied because you’ve dump it first. Now, can there be some waste material left over from your initial dump? Possibly, but the force and gravity from emptying the grey tank would ensure that waste material would not find its way back into the grey tank.
I’ve been doing it this way for several years and have never had and issue with cross contamination. With that, my video tutorial is not the only video showing this method.
I’ve added an instructional video from an RV rental company that rents out Simplicity’s in the attachment below.. Take note and listen carefully at exactly minute 9:00. The demonstration also shows to leave the black tank open. Ultimately, if you wish to close your black tank first, then do so. The ultimate goal is to empty the tanks after all. Thank you for commenting on this video, I will leave your comment and my response open to the public to read.
